The Nursery Manager will be required to learn how different cultivars/strains grow, and how to identify a variety of pests/pathogens. This is a complex position that requires good organizational skills, critical thinking, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing tasks.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensure all genetics are kept alive and in good health, bi-weekly inventory checks on all genetics and tracking of location within the nursery. Update veg inventory in provided spreadsheets or management software once inventory checks are completed
- Develop and maintain schedule of when to regenerate new cutting stock of all cultivars to secure safekeeping of genetic library
- Collaborate with Nursery Supervisor to diagnose and treat any plant health related issues in the nursery
- Troubleshoot all vegetative plant health issues including propagation, present and execute a gameplan for remediation
- Monitor both mother plants and the propagation room to ensure cutting stock aligns with annual cultivation schedule. Develop and present a contingency plan if cutting stock falls short of what's outlined in the annual cultivation schedule
- Develop and maintain a schedule of micropropagation in tissue culture that will backup all genetics - initiation of shoot tissue, initial subculture, and re-subculture to maintain redundancy of all cultivars in the companies genetic library
- Oversee and execute transfer of tissue culture ex-plants from shoot initiation formula to root initiation formula, transfer of rooted ex-plants to rockwool(or other media), and acclimatization of rooted ex-plants into the production cultivation environment
- Oversee and execute all seed germination, ensure maximum viability of seedings
- Administering and developing training programs for all nursery employees, writing/updating SOP’s and tracking KPI’s
- Any other task assigned by the Director of Cultivation
Qualifications:
- Must have 2 years of experience directly managing a team of 4 or more employees in a production facility
- Bachelor's degree in plant science, business, or management, or 4+ years equivalent experience as a Manager in a commercial cannabis facility
- Minimum of 2 years experience overseeing the commercial propagation of cannabis in a regulated environment
- Familiarity with a wide variety of different cannabis cultivars, how they grow, and what techniques to apply in veg, pruning, generating cutting stock, and propagation according to an individual cultivar’s needs
- Must be adept in Metrc regulatory database, Excel spreadsheets, developing and tracking KPI’s, inventory management, labor forecasting, and efficient task delegation

We are looking for an experienced Nursery Manager (Manager) with a strong working knowledge of California desert native plant species. The Manager will work closely with the Director of Plant Conservation and is responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operations of the nursery, including growing plants for sale, display, and research, the management of growing contracts, production schedules, propagation and production records, care and maintenance of plants for sale and stock, maintaining and repairing irrigation and cooling systems, weeding and watering nursery grounds and demonstration garden, maintaining clean equipment and workspaces, and supervising and working with the Production Assistant (Assistant) and volunteers. The Manager is responsible for preparing for annual plant sale events, including labeling and grooming plants, working with the outreach department on event and volunteer coordination, and supervising volunteers. The Manager is responsible for managing inventory, ordering materials and supplies, monitoring and treating pests and diseases, and propagation and production of container stock as directed by the Director. The Manager is responsible for administrative duties such as submitting progress reports and invoices for growing contracts to the Director for approval, scheduling delivery of growing contracts, approving associate’s timecards, and writing/assisting with associate’s performance reviews. The Manager maintains all nursery and seed production stock, nursery grounds, and the Desert Discovery Garden. The Manager may be asked to participate in outreach and fundraising efforts centered on the plant conservation programs and other events as needed. Working some weekends may be required.
Starting Salary Range: $48,000 to $55,000
Responsibilities:
- Determine and maintain optimal growing conditions for all plants.
- Create and manage production schedules for growing contracts, plant sales, and special projects.
- Monitor and maintain growing contracts and submit monthly progress reports to contractors. Communicate regularly with the Director regarding the progress and condition of all contracts.
- Maintain propagation and production records on all nursery stock.
- Care for and maintain all nursery stock, including but not limited to growing contracts, mother stock, and Desert Discovery Garden. This includes watering, weeding, labeling, and practicing integrated pest management.
- Identify pests and pathogens and apply appropriate remedies in a timely manner. This includes routine monitoring and controlling of rodents, invertebrate pests, and diseases.
- Follow BMP guidelines and make improvements as needed. Represent MDLT at monthly BMP group meetings.
- Maintain nursery and greenhouse equipment and systems, such as irrigation systems, cooling systems, solarization benches, pot washing station, and tools.
- Construct/Assemble structures and accessories such as greenhouse benches and growing areas, as needed.
- Maintain a clean, safe work environment, and conduct routine safety inspections.
- Maintain inventory and order supplies as needed.
- Coordinate and schedule timely delivery of growing contracts. Deliver plants to contractors as needed.
- Coordinate and supervise preparation for annual plant sales.
- Communicate effectively with customers, clients, and supporters. Provide information on plant care and maintenance upon request.
- Schedule and supervise nursery volunteers.
- Assign work duties to the Production Assistant and provide supervision and support.
- Provide leadership and training for new Associates and volunteers.
- Approve Associate timecards each pay period.

Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, or related field, or equivalent education and/or experience.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

JOB DUTIES:
· Oversee integrated pest management (IPM) program related to biological controls, diseases, insects, etc.
· Assist in the planning, organizing and coordinating of employee tasks related to propagating, cultivating, and harvesting cannabis.
· Assist in creating training material such as SOPs for cultivation tasks (pruning, de-leafing, irrigation, pest control, etc.).

Job Summary:
The Nursery Manager will oversee all propagation tasks in a large-scale indoor cannabis production facility. The Nursery Manager will lead by example with the cultivation team in all aspects including but not limited to propagation, destruction, sanitation and record keeping.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and/or maintain propagation protocols and nutrient regiment.

Qualifications & Skills:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- At least 10 years of propagation experience and knowledge of commercial plant cultivation including nutrient requirements, mediums, light requirements, temperature control, air flow, etc. (less experience required with bachelor’s or master’s degree in related fields)
- Must have knowledge of plant diseases, insects and fungi, as well as plant treatment options.
