This attorney will support the managing attorney for the Seattle office doing litigation work related to business and regulatory disputes associated with the cannabis industry and will work collaboratively with other members of the Cultiva offices in Washington, Washington and California to analyze new business, assist with current client workload, and to help grow the firm’s presence.

Outstanding writing skills and proven litigation experience, up through trial are a prerequisite and this attorney must be able to make and communicate difficult decisions, handle multiple complex situations, and produce high quality work while advocating for our clients under time pressure and during disputes. We are responsible for helping our clients solve exciting business and regulatory challenges in a rapidly growing, constantly changing, emerging market and are seeking someone who is excited to learn and grow with the industry.

Qualifications

• Washington Bar license (required)
• Interest or experience in Cannabis Law
• Litigation experience, drafting pleadings, managing files, depositions, arbitrations and trial
• Exceptional writing (writing sample required) and communication skills
• Legal Research, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to develop and lead initiatives, a person who can work independently but also knows how to work well with others as part of a team
• A high level of professionalism and outstanding business judgment

About You

A successful candidate will be knowledgeable about state and federal civil procedure, motion practice, discovery, and trial preparation. You are not expected to know everything or have done everything, but you must understand the process.

You will join a team of partners, associates, paralegals, a secretary, finance manager, an HR manager, and a receptionist. We use a suite of cloud-based software including Office 365, Clio, Logikcull, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other programs as needed for your role.

We are now functioning as a mostly virtual team and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, though we do have a beautiful office on Market Street at Montgomery in San Francisco. POSITION: Attorney in the Cannabis Advice, Law and Litigation Section of the Municipal Law Branch (CALLS).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: CALLS attorneys serve as counsel to the Department of Cannabis Regulation (DCR) and the Cannabis Regulation Commission, which are involved in the licensing and regulation of commercial cannabis activity in the City of Los Angeles, including retail sales, cultivation, and manufacture of cannabis for medicinal and adult recreational use. CALLS attorneys also interface with other City departments including the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Fire Department, the Department of Building & Safety and the Planning Department, as well as counsel for those departments. The attorneys’ duties include providing advice and support on a range of matters related to cannabis licensing and regulation, drafting ordinances and regulations, assisting DCR in developing public-facing information and resources, representing DCR in administrative hearings before hearing officers and the Cannabis Regulation Commission, and handling related civil litigation, including writ proceedings, in state and federal court. CALLS attorneys also assist in handling subpoenas and public records requests and staffing the Cannabis Regulation Commission during public meetings governed by the Brown Act.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants for this position must have a license to practice in all California state courts and the United States District Court for the Central District. Additional requirements include:

· Minimum three years of civil litigation experience in federal and state courts;

· Demonstrated research and writing skills in complex areas of the law;

· Demonstrated ability to problem solve, and to make decisions practically and independently; and

· Strong oral communication skills.

The following qualifications are desirable:

· Minimum three years of experience providing legal advice to public agencies and/or regulatory agencies;

· Knowledge of local and state cannabis law;

About the Job

We are seeking a full-time civil litigation paralegal. This position includes paralegal work for all aspects of litigation, from intaking a new client through trial and appeals. We have a varied practice involving several different areas of commercial litigation. The paralegal may also work on business and employment transactional work (though transactional work is certainly not our focus).

We also represent bars, restaurants, startups of all kinds, tech companies, and you-name-it; we even once dealt with an athletic pole dancing studio!

Finally, we are a true lifestyle practice. We typically do not work late nights or weekends except when the work demands that we do (i.e., trial prep and case deadlines). Our team consists of happy people who enjoy the work we do together and find joy in the excellent work that we do for our clients. About You

A successful candidate will be knowledgeable about state and federal court filing procedures, calendaring, pleadings, service of process, discovery, and trial preparation. You will join a team of 5 existing staff members (two paralegals, a finance manager, an HR manager, and a receptionist). We use a suite of cloud-based software including Office 365, Clio, Logikcull, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other programs as needed for your role.

We are now functioning as a mostly virtual team and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, though we do have a beautiful office on Market Street at Montgomery in San Francisco. Accordingly, we will consider an applicant who wishes to work from home often, though due to the nature of the work, physical presence in the office may be required from time to time. We practice social distancing when in the office and have a written protocol.
