Associate Attorney- Fun Litigation Firm in SF and Virtual
Ad Astra Law Group, LLP
Associate Attorney Needed for Fun Boutique SF Litigation Practice (Business, Employment, Real Estate, and Intellectual Property)
If you are a sharp, knowledgeable litigator looking for a job that doesn’t cause you to hate your life, consider joining Ad Astra Law Group! We are looking for two candidates with 3-9 years of experience.
About Us
We are a group of 10 attorneys who are almost all Super Lawyers. We are as young, scrappy, and hungry as a powerhouse boutique law firm can be. We handle some very high-profile matters and some very small matters that make a real difference in our clients’ lives, as well as just about everything in between. Also, we are in the process of becoming a certified woman-owned law firm. We have been around for 9 years and we are growing at a steady pace.
We have a specialty industry focus: half of our clients are involved in the cannabis industry. Our ideal candidate will be very comfortable with legal cannabis, even if you don’t know a whole lot about it! Through our work with Ad Astra, we are on the front lines and pushing the boundaries in this new, hot industry. We also represent bars, restaurants, startups of all kinds, tech companies, and you-name-it; we even once dealt with an athletic pole dancing studio!
Finally, we are a true lifestyle practice. We typically do not work late nights or weekends except when the work demands that we do (i.e., trial prep and case deadlines). Our team consists of happy people who enjoy the work we do together and find joy in the excellent work that we do for our clients. We aren’t driven solely by profit, but by the principles of balance and satisfaction. Compensation reflects this rare environment, so please adjust your expectations. The other benefits for the position will be discussed during the interview process. We are still kind of a startup and we are looking for another brave soul who is willing to board this ship while we continue to build it.
Here is a review from our current departing employee:
"Ad Astra confirmed for me that a challenging, rewarding, and fun legal career is not incongruent with having a great life outside of work. The focus on mentorship and wide variety of practice areas here allow associates to find their groove and pursue their passions. Ad Astra had me hitting the ground running and has cheered me on through every challenge. Within my first six months here, I’d signed my first client and appeared in court for the first time (two things I thought were on the distant horizon, given my experience level!). Folks are free to come and go from the stunning San Francisco office without any of the politics and subtext found at more traditional firms. This tech-savvy team ends up having more face time with one another than I ever had in an in-person office model. Ad Astra truly treats its people like professionals, colleagues, and friends. I'm not the first person to leave this position for their dream job - I'm headed to a firm where I get to work in the practice area I've dreamed about since law school. I'm extremely sad to leave this team, but I know that I've established relationships with brilliant people that will continue on."
About You
A successful candidate will be knowledgeable about state and federal civil procedure, motion practice, discovery, and trial preparation. You are not expected to know everything or have done everything, but you must understand the process.
You will join a team of partners, associates, paralegals, a secretary, finance manager, an HR manager, and a receptionist. We use a suite of cloud-based software including Office 365, Clio, Logikcull, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other programs as needed for your role.
We are now functioning as a mostly virtual team and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, though we do have a beautiful office on Market Street at Montgomery in San Francisco. Accordingly, we will consider an applicant who wishes to work from home often, though due to the nature of the work, physical presence in the office may be required from time to time. We practice social distancing when in the office and have a written protocol.
If you are interested in joining our salty little pirate ship, please check us out at www.astralegal.com and send a cover letter with your resume to our Managing Partner, Katy Young. Your cover letter should include some personal details about you (since our fun, collegial culture is so important to us), why you would want to work with us, and your salary requirements (reminder: we are still a startup and we really take seriously our commitment to having our lives outside of the office). Please do not disqualify yourself from applying— err on the side of adventure and apply to be a star!

Qualifications
Associate (Required)
Day Shift (Required)
Paralegal Certificate (Preferred)
Full Job Description
Paralegal Needed for Boutique SF Litigation Practice (Business, Employment, Real Estate, and Intellectual Property)
PLEASE READ TO THE END AND SUBMIT AN APPLICATION AS DESCRIBED BELOW. WE WILL NOT CONSIDER APPLICANTS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.
About Us
We are a group of 10 attorneys who are almost all Super Lawyers. We are as young, scrappy, and hungry as a powerhouse boutique law firm can be. We handle some very high-profile matters and some very small matters that make a real difference in our clients’ lives, as well as just about everything in between. Also, we are in the process of becoming a certified woman-owned law firm. We have been around for 8 years and we are growing at a steady pace.
We also represent bars, restaurants, startups of all kinds, tech companies, individuals, and you-name-it; we even once dealt with an athletic pole dancing studio!
Finally, we are a true lifestyle practice. Our team consists of happy people who enjoy the work we do together and find joy in the excellent work that we do for our clients. We aren’t driven solely by profit but by the principles of balance and satisfaction. Compensation reflects this rare environment, so please adjust your expectations. The other benefits for the position will be discussed during the interview process. We are still kind of a startup and we are looking for another brave soul who is willing to board this ship while we continue to build it.
We have a COVID prevention policy for anyone who goes to the office, but primarily everyone is working remotely still. We may transition back to primarily office attendance as conditions improve.
About the Job
We are seeking a full-time civil litigation paralegal. This position includes paralegal work for all aspects of litigation, from intaking a new client through trial and appeals. We have a varied practice involving several different areas of commercial litigation. The paralegal may also work on business and employment transactional work (though transactional work is certainly not our focus).
Pay rate will be commensurate with experience. We offer health benefits and 401K. We have a bonus policy for hours billed to a client that exceed the very reasonable threshold we set. Your hard work will be recognized.
You will be filling the shoes of a long-time paralegal moving on to public interest work in Washington DC, and you will join a team of 5 other existing staff members (one other paralegals, a full-time litigation secretary, a finance manager, an HR manager, and a receptionist). We use a suite of cloud-based software including Office 365, Clio, Logikcull, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other programs as needed for your role. We expect you to be tech-savvy and open to change.
To be successful in this role, you are knowledgeable about:
· state and federal court local rules and filing procedures
· the rules of court
· legal research and writing for paralegals
· appropriate client interactions and confidentiality
· calendaring
· preparing pleadings
· service of process
· all aspects of discovery
· trial preparation
· some trial or arbitration experience is a plus
· high level of knowledge in Microsoft Office and Adobe PDFs are a must
We are now functioning as a mostly virtual team and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, though we do have a beautiful office on Market Street at Montgomery in San Francisco. Accordingly, we will consider an applicant who wishes to work from home often, though due to the nature of the work, physical presence in the office may be required from time to time. We practice social distancing when in the office and have a written protocol. As the world progresses, we anticipate a more significant return to the office.
If you are a sharp, knowledgeable litigation paralegal looking for a job that doesn’t cause you to hate your life, consider joining Ad Astra Law Group!
About You
You read this far, you might actually want to work with us! The job market is crazy right now, isn’t it? You are probably sick of law firm life and all the office politics. You might even be a little disillusioned about the legal field. You take pride in your work product. You are a team player and you don’t say “that’s not my job.” You might have said the words, “I’m right on top of that, Rose!” You work hard and you probably play pretty hard, too. You are a little adventurous and not scared to try new things. You are looking for a really great group of people to doing meaningful work alongside you. You are nice and you play well with others.
If you are interested in joining our salty little pirate ship, please check us out at www.astralegal.com. You must send a cover letter with your resume to the attention of Sean Gentry, Partner, at sgentry @ astralegal.com (we put spaces there to avoid spam). Your cover letter must include some personal details about you (since our fun, collegial culture is so important to us), why you would want to work with us, and your salary requirements. Reminder: we are still a startup and we really take seriously our commitment to having our lives outside of the office, which probably means we don’t pay commensurate with the big firms. If we caught your interest, please do not disqualify yourself from applying—err on the side of adventure and apply to be a star!

Lightly Seasoned Litigation Associate Needed For Fun Boutique SF Practice (Business, Employment, IP & Real Estate)
If you are a brave adventurer and have 2-4 years of experience litigating business, employment, intellectual property, and/or real estate disputes, consider joining Ad Astra Law Group! We have been around for 7 years and growing like a weed. (This is a pun, we do a significant amount of work in the cannabis industry.) We are looking for someone who already possesses basic proficiency in litigation and the California Code of Civil Procedure, including discovery, document review, motion practice.
We are a group of 12 attorneys who are mostly Super Lawyers and Rising Stars. We are as young, scrappy, and hungry as a boutique law firm can be. We handle some very high-profile matters and some very small matters that make a real difference in our clients’ lives, as well as just about everything in between. Also, we are in the process of becoming a certified woman-owned law firm.
We also represent bars, restaurants, startups of all kinds, tech companies, you-name-it, we even once dealt with a pole dancing studio!
Finally, we are a true lifestyle practice. We do not work nights or weekends unless the work demands that we do (i.e. trial prep) or you prefer to work odd hours. The billable hour requirement for this position is 1500 hours per year, bonuses paid for hours you bill beyond that floor. Compensation reflects this rare laxity, so please adjust your expectations…a little lower...and a bit lower than that.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are also primarily a remote workplace. We anticipate that the opportunity for intermittent remote work will remain a feature of our office after the shelter-in-place orders are lifted. We expect both that you would be able to work remotely and that you have the requisite self-discipline to be productive while outside the office.
If you are interested in joining our salty little pirate ship, please check us out and send a cover letter and resume to our Managing Partner, Katy Young. Your cover letter should include some personal details about you (since our fun, collegial culture is of tantamount importance to us), why you would want to work with us, some pirate speak, and your salary requirements. Reminder: we are still a startup and we really take seriously our commitment to having our lives outside of the office. Please do not disqualify yourself -- err on the side of adventure and apply to be a star!
