The Lab Director is responsible for the planning and operational performance of the assigned laboratory. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead the team with dynamic leadership that promotes an environment of support, development, engagement, and high productivity. This includes, but is not limited to, hiring, coaching, performance management, ensuring productivity, disciplinary action, cross-training, rewards and recognition, and succession planning.
- Ensure the financial health of the laboratory. This includes managing expenses related to all operational activities, such as equipment, labor, and supplies and monitoring laboratory performance by measuring, monitoring, and managing to company KPI targets.
- Manage lab operations, including production, process evaluation, and monitoring.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory policies and procedures, state regulations, and ISO-17025 quality management system.
- Drive a strong customer service culture while adhering to the highest ethical and safety standards.
- Maintain analytical equipment (i.e. HPLC, GC-MSMS, LCMSMS, ICP-MS, qPCR analytical balances, autoclave, centrifuge, biological safety cabinets, fume hoods, etc.).
- Monitor and manage facilities.
- Partner with the Quality Assurance Team to assure method and SOP compliance.
- Evaluate both OOS and CAPA reports with the Senior Executive Team and Quality department.

Job Purpose:
The Lab Director is responsible for the planning and operational performance of the assigned laboratory. This role oversees the day-to-day operations and ensures compliance standards for quality and safety. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead the team with dynamic leadership that promotes an environment of support, development, engagement, and high productivity. This includes, but is not limited to, hiring, coaching, performance management, ensuring productivity, disciplinary action, cross-training, rewards and recognition, and succession planning.
- Ensure the financial health of the laboratory. This includes managing expenses related to all operational activities, such as equipment, labor, and supplies and monitoring laboratory performance by measuring, monitoring, and managing to company KPI targets.
- Manage lab operations, including production, process evaluation, and monitoring.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory policies and procedures, state regulations, and ISO-17025 quality management system.
- Drive a strong customer service culture while adhering to the highest ethical and safety standards.
- Maintain analytical equipment (i.e. HPLC, GC-MSMS, LCMSMS, ICP-MS, qPCR analytical balances, autoclave, centrifuge, biological safety cabinets, fume hoods, etc.).
- Monitor and manage facilities.
- Partner with the Quality Assurance Team to assure method and SOP compliance.
- Evaluate both OOS and CAPA reports with the Senior Executive Team and Quality department.

Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
- Strong understanding of standard laboratory protocol and experience working with cannabis laboratory analytical equipment (i.e. HPLC, GC-MSMS, LCMSMS, ICP-MS)

BASIC FUNCTION

This position requires a broad knowledge of analytical chemistry obtained from a degree and related job experience, to analyze and interpret data accurately and troubleshoot an array of instrumentation. Cannabis Laboratory experience required.
Expertise in troubleshooting analytical instruments is necessary to maintain the day to day operations of the laboratory. A general knowledge of ISO/GLP regulations is necessary to ensure the accuracy and precision of analytical results. We are seeking a talented Laboratory Director to join our dynamic team and help run multi-state cannabis testing laboratories. The Laboratory Director is an expert in analytical techniques, and can easily operate, troubleshoot and maintain sophisticated analytical instruments. The Lab Director is experienced in developing, validating, and implementing analytical methods. Additional responsibilities include managing the day to day operations of the lab, including creating, maintaining and implementing all SOPs, training, and managing the laboratory employees.
Core Responsibilities
- Execute exceptional wet laboratory techniques with documentation as per ISO 17025:2017 standards and the cannabis testing rules set forth by California Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC).
- Experience working with the BCC on validation report submissions and communications
- Experience & expertise with instrumentation maintenance SOP’s
- Work with the following instrumentation: GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, GC-FID, ICP-MS, triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS. Candidates with LC-MS/MS & GC-MS/MS experience will be preferred.
- Monitor and maintain equipment including preventive maintenance, calibration of analytical instrumentation including GC/FID, GC/MS, LC/MS/MS, ICP-MS, and more.
- Experience performing pesticide residue analysis in foods, soil, or water.
- Experience with rt PCR is a bonus.
- Experience with LIMS integration, electronic notebooks, and general IT knowledge
- Ensure that SOPs are followed, maintained, improved and meet BCC regulatory requirements.
- Supervise laboratory employees, including sampling/transport technicians, laboratory technicians, sample intake and general administration personnel.
- Create and manage all lab activity schedules including sampling pickups, lab through put, and customer reporting.
- Monitor all regulatory updates, maintain professional expertise and knowledge.
- Maintain an efficient lab and processes with precision time management skills.
- Provide excellent customer service. Direct communication with clients.
- Domestic travel may be required.
Qualifications
- A doctoral or master’s degree in biological, chemical, agricultural, environmental, or related sciences from an accredited college or university, plus at least 2 years of full-time practical experience.
- Working experience in food safety, clinical, environmental or forensic laboratories, cannabis analytical laboratories preferred, especially experience working with a wide range of analytical testing.
- Must have management experience and team leadership skills.
- Experience with LIMS integration, electronic notebooks, and general IT knowledge.
- Professional expertise and experience with HPLC, GC, GC/MS and/or LC/MS/MS on Shimadzu and Perkin Elmer instrumentation.
- Experience with ISO/IEC 17025:2017, or similar accreditation processes.
- Perfected professional skills in both verbal and written communication.
- Must pass a full background security check and complete a Live Scan report for city purposes.
- BCC Regulations prohibit Laboratory employees from owning, having an interest in or working for any other California Cannabis Licensees while employed by a Laboratory.

The cannabis lab director is responsible for the oversight of all technical operations of one or multiple labs, depending on the facility. This role must utilize their experience in chromatography, microbiological analysis, and other chemical methods. The lab director is responsible for establishing and implementing standard operating procedures, as well as, select and develop the lab’s team of qualified employees. All operation activities fall under the manager’s duties, which include but are not limited to program results, lab costs, SOPs, hiring, quality assurance, and project development.
Education/Experience:
The candidate must have at least one of the following:
ü Hold a doctoral degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university and have completed 3 years of full-time, post-education practical experience in a laboratory performing analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were recognized by a laboratory-accrediting body;
ü Hold a master’s degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university and have completed 5 years of full-time practical experience in a post-education laboratory performing analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were recognized by a laboratory-accrediting body; or
ü Hold a Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university and have completed 7 years of full-time, post-education practical experience in a laboratory performing analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were recognized by a laboratory-accrediting body.
They need to have significant experience in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) testing. They must also have strong management, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Technical
- Use deep knowledge of analytical chemistry instrumentation and data analysis to manage multiple projects related to the development, qualification and/or troubleshooting of sensitive, efficient, and reliable assays for a wide class of molecules simultaneously.
