Currently, Smithers’ Cannabis Testing Services (CTS) business has three (3) testing laboratories and is expected to grow through a combination of greenfield build and acquisitions to 12-14 labs. This CSO position requires a combination of technical laboratory knowledge, business development acumen, and strong interpersonal skills.
Job Summary
- Represent Smithers to clients and perspective clients. Coordinate client events, attend trade shows, partner with subject matter experts and Sales and Marketing to prepare commercial material.
- Help Cannabis Testing Services (CTS) President and State Directors prepare technical and commercial proposals for clients and prospects.
- Set standards that are applied across all CTS labs. This will include assisting in drafting job descriptions, participating in the hiring, mentoring, training and development of scientific staff across the CTS business.
- Participate in the due diligence process for perspective acquisitions. This will include participation in the evaluation and valuation of new sites, evaluating the technical skills of the staff and overseeing the integration of technical staff and processes into Smithers.
- Provide consulting services to clients.
- Backfill critical technical roles should the business experience turnover. Likely positions include state director and operations manager positions.
Job Duties
Essential FunctionsThe technical face to the industry. This means participation in:
- Customer visits and occasional discussions with clients about unusual results and what they mean.
- Trade shows.
- Breakfast/lunch seminars.
- Development of marketing materials.
- Participate in technical committees in the Industry as a technical expert.
- The technical leader and standard setter for the division. This means participation in: Development of job descriptions, recruiting, hiring and mentorship of senior leaders at each site.
- Creating and implementing minimum standards for equipment, methods, and facilities.
- Ongoing development of technical skills for him/herself as well as those of site leadership.
- Evaluate new test methods for implementation.
- Oversight of the development and approval of analytical testing method development, optimization, and validation, and new technology additions to the division.
- Trouble-shooting suspect results/methods.
- Supporting cross-departmental compliance with all relevant regulations including: ISO 17025, AOAC International, ASTM, USP, etc...
- Must be able to understand and follow laboratory safety standards.
- New site development. This means participation in: Evaluation and valuation of new sites for acquisition.
- Technical due diligence.
- Technical integration.
- Advisory/project consulting.
- Provide extra support to a site if we have turnover in the site director role.Location: There is a preference for candidates to live in Akron, OH (Assistance will be provided for candidates if needed) but we are flexible to candidates living in any of the primary CTS locations (ex: NY, NJ or IL)
Travel Requirements:
- Overnight travel: 40% out of office travel. Majority travel is overnight.

- Minimum a bachelors, preferably a masters degree or above in either biology or chemistry.

The ~8,000 sqft laboratory has two (2) full suites of new Agilent instrumentation as well as new ancillary testing equipment/instrumentation throughout. In addition to the PathogenDx microbial testing solution, there are dedicated rooms for DNA extraction, amplification, and traditional culturing.
The laboratory director will be primarily responsible for managing all laboratory testing staff, overseeing all sampling, testing and data analysis, obtaining and maintaining ISO 17025 accreditation, and adhering to the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency rules.
