We are seeking a talented Laboratory Director to join our dynamic team and help run our cannabis testing laboratory. The Laboratory Director is an expert in analytical techniques, and can easily operate, troubleshoot and maintain sophisticated analytical instruments. The Lab Director is experienced in developing, validating, and implementing analytical methods. Additional responsibilities include managing the day to day operations of the lab, including creating, maintaining and implementing allSOPs, training, and managing the laboratory employees.
Core Responsibilities
- Execute exceptional wet laboratory techniques with documentation as per ISO
17025:2017 standards and the cannabis testing rules set forth by CaliforniaBureau of Cannabis Control (BCC).
- Experience working with the BCC on validation report submissions and communications
- Experience & expertise with instrumentation maintenance SOP’s
- Work with the following instrumentation: GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, GC-FID, ICP-
MS, triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS. Candidates with LC-MS/MS & GC-MS/MS experience will be preferred.
- Monitor, troubleshoot and maintain equipment including preventive maintenance, calibration of analytical instrumentation including GC/FID, GC/MS, LC/MS/MS,
ICP-MS, and more.
- Ensure laboratory safety protocols are followed and address any safety concerns.
- Monitor and ensure the quality of all data generated by the lab. Promptly handle any issues that arise.
- Experience performing pesticide residue analysis in foods, soil, or water.
- Experience with rt PCR is a bonus.
- Experience with LIMS integration, electronic notebooks, and general IT knowledge
- Ensure that SOPs are followed, maintained, improved and meet BCC regulatory requirements.
- Supervise laboratory employees, including sampling/transport technicians, laboratory technicians, sample intake and general administration personnel.
- Create and manage all lab activity schedules including sampling pickups, lab through put, and customer reporting.
- Monitor all regulatory updates, maintain professional expertise and knowledge.
- Maintain an efficient lab and processes with precision time management skills.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Domestic travel may be required.
Qualifications
- A doctorial or master’s degree in biological, chemical, agricultural, environmental, or related sciences from an accredited college or university, plus at least 2 years of full-time practical experience.
- Working experience in cannabis analytical laboratories preferred, especially experience working with a wide range of analytical testing.
- Must have management experience and team leadership skills.
- Experience with LIMS integration, electronic notebooks, and general IT knowledge.
- Professional expertise and experience with HPLC, GC, GC/MS and/or
LC/MS/MS on Shimadzu and Perkin Elmer instrumentation.

SENIOR SCIENTIST – Laboratory Director
This position requires a broad knowledge of analytical chemistry obtained from a degree and related job experience, to analyze and interpret data accurately and troubleshoot an array of instrumentation. Cannabis Laboratory experience required.
Expertise in troubleshooting analytical instruments is necessary to maintain the day to day operations of the laboratory. A general knowledge of ISO/GLP regulations is necessary to ensure the accuracy and precision of analytical results. Strong analytical skills are necessary to resolve issues with laboratory systems or clients. Interpersonal skills are critical to manage laboratory personnel and to discuss analysis results with clients.
Organizational and planning skills are a must to ensure the daily operation of assigned tasks are completed in a timely manner. A broad knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Repair and maintenance of analytical instruments which include hardware and software
- Diagnose and resolve instrument performance issues
- Plan and implement preventative maintenance to ensure minimal downtime of instrumentation
- Evaluate and harmonize laboratory methods, technology and equipment for current and future services.
- Ensure that laboratory operating systems are in compliance with quality, safety and productivity goals.
- Assure lab technology meets regulatory and accreditation requirements
- Support coordination and organization of follow-up audits and method implementation
- Support continuous improvement activities related to analytical techniques and quality system.
- Assists with client and regulatory audits to ensure compliance with ISO requirements
- Develop and maintain expertise in industry, technical, and functional areas key to the business
- Provide solutions and recommendations to solve internal and external customer issues to advance business opportunities
- Prepare and present technical presentations to external clients

REQUIREMENTS
M.S. in Chemistry, Engineering or Material Science, plus equivalent experience
5-10 years of hands-on experience in a regulated laboratory environment (i.e. ISO17025)
Proficient in Microsoft Suite Software (Excel, Word, Outlook).
QUALIFICATIONS
Operational experience with HPLC, HS-GC-MS GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS
Proficiency with LabSolutions, Chemstation, MassHunter, Chromeleon, Xcalibur, or WinLab32
Experience with LIMS and QMS.
Knowledge of ISO17025 standards
Strong understanding of California Bureau of Cannabis Control 16 CCR (California Code of Regulations Title 16)
Understanding of data analysis, statistical methods, and root cause analysis
Ability to manage stressful situations while working independently or as part of a team
Excellent verbal and written communication organizational, and project management skills
Must be flexible in work schedule as overtime, weekend, and holidays may be required.

The Chief Scientific Officer is responsible for:

· Working in conjunction with the general partners for hiring qualified technical and support staff for laboratory operations
· Overseeing all laboratory personnel
· Involved in continuing education, attending conferences and innovating whenever possible
· Responsible for overseeing the operations and regular preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments
· Ensuring that the laboratory has the appropriate resources and facilities to perform required work
· Acts as the laboratory public liaison with community events, regulatory bodies and agents, and industry events
· Ensuring the lab is operating in accordance with BCC, ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard, state, local, federal laws and regulations where appropriate
· Reviews and approves all SOPs and policies prior to their implementation and ensures all approved SOPs and policies are provided to laboratory personnel and are adhered to
· Nominating deputies when the CSO and QA Director are absent
· Ensuring that all analysts and supervisors have the appropriate education and training to properly carry out the duties assigned to them, and ensures that this training has been documented
· Acts as client liaison to discuss results and expectations with clients, as well as provide client education when appropriate
· Ensuring that corrective actions relating to findings from the audits (internal/external) are being followed by staff to ensure no reoccurrences
· Works with the general partners as needed to develop and improve new client acquisition, client retention, services pricing, new capital equipment expenditures
· Perfecting ordering and purchasing of lab supplies and equipment as needed
· Consults with laboratory analysts and technicians over technical issues, data analysis, troubleshooting
· Ensuring lab safety plans are followed
· Develops employee training and record keeping in accordance with state and regulations
· Responsible for oversight of all building maintenance issues and reporting these to the General Partners as needed
· Reviewing an annual management system review from the QA Director and participating in the annual management system review meeting
· Select vendors in accordance with the required standards to ensure the highest quality testing

Education/Experience:
The candidate must have at least one of the following:
ü Hold a doctoral degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university and have completed 3 years of full-time, post-education practical experience in a laboratory performing analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were recognized by a laboratory-accrediting body;
ü Hold a master’s degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university and have completed 5 years of full-time practical experience in a post-education laboratory performing analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were recognized by a laboratory-accrediting body; or
ü Hold a Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university and have completed 7 years of full-time, post-education practical experience in a laboratory performing analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were recognized by a laboratory-accrediting body.
They need to have significant experience in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) testing. They must also have strong management, communication, and problem-solving skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Technical
- Use deep knowledge of analytical chemistry instrumentation and data analysis to manage multiple projects related to the development, qualification and/or troubleshooting of sensitive, efficient, and reliable assays for a wide class of molecules simultaneously.
- Prepare, review, and edit method transfer, qualification, and validation protocols, analytical technical reports, and regulatory documentation.
- Completes routine preventive maintenance, cleaning, and troubleshooting on instruments and equipment.
Regulatory
- Ensures development, implementation, and administration of department’s policies and procedures.
- Ensures development, implementation, and administration of the Quality Control program.
- Establishes and ensures compliance with all marijuana regulatory agency (MRA) requirements through documentation, audits, and corrective and preventative actions (CAPA’s).
- Participate in the development of new standard operating procedures (SOP’s), validations, and new laboratory developed tests.
- Performs quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of data.
Management Responsibilities
- Facilitates open, positive, and productive communication with executive leadership and laboratory team.
- Guides the overall direction and performance of the laboratory in coordination with executive leadership
- Performs performance review and planning for direct reports.
- Works with supervisory personnel to ensure participation in educational plan and personnel development plans.
- Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with laboratory personnel, other laboratories, clients, and vendors.
- Interviews, hires, counsels, and/or terminates subordinate personnel, as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience:
- First consideration will be given to applicants with prior experience in cannabis compliance laboratory testing.
- PhD or MS in analytical chemistry (preferred) or related discipline with previous cannabis safety testing experience.
- PhD in analytical chemistry or related discipline, with 1+ years relevant experience in commercial production testing.
- MS in analytical chemistry or related discipline, with 3+ years relevant experience in commercial production testing.
