Job Brief
Vertosa is looking for a Research Scientist experienced in food science, formulation, and surface chemistry to merge scientific development into natural ingredients and create innovative products. Additionally, the role will require participation with cross-functional teams to ensure effective resolution of technical issues and support product innovation. This Research Scientist will support the VP of R&D to assist in product development and production scale-up along with the daily execution of R&D-related lab activities. This person will also be responsible for managing and training laboratory technician(s).
Responsibilities
- Develop new ingredient combinations to improve the water solubility of plant extracts, including emulsion and water-soluble powders.
- Research advanced nanoemulsion and microemulsion systems through screening new ingredients and designing new formulas to deliver targeted effects including clarity, flavor, organic label, controlled release and beyond.
- Research water-soluble powder via various combinations of processing technology and ingredient combination optionality.
- Evaluate stability, compatibility, shelf life, safety and basic specs for newly developed emulsion and powder products.
- Provide guidance on how emulsion(s) and powder(s) can be best utilized in the downstream products: i.e., ingredient compatibility, use level, stability conditions, manufacturing requirement and others.
- Design experiments to solve technical issues raised by clients.

- Keep track of the latest plant medicine literature needed to stay on top of industry research and trends.
Requirements
- Master’s degree or above in emulsion chemistry, food science with experience in formulation.
- 5+ years industrial experience.
- Hands-on experience with processing equipment including, but not limited to: sonicator, homogenizer, microfluidizer, spray dryer, freeze dryer.
- Familiarity with surface chemistry analytical tools, including dynamic light scattering, surface tension, contact angle and beyond.

PHI’s Prevention Policy Group works to advance public policies that use the best scientific evidence in public health to prevent the occurrence of disease and reduce inequities in health. To do that it carries out research, builds coalitions, designs policy proposals, and evaluates innovative policy solutions. The group currently includes the Getting it Right from the Start team which works on cannabis policy that can better protect youth, public health, and equity where cannabis is being legalized; the California Alliance for Prevention Funding, that works to advance stable funding support for prevention and health equity in communities, work on food policy and the Safely Opening Schools project that works on COVID-19 prevention in schools.
Position Summary
This research scientist position will lead the implementation and management of a newly funded three-year study: ABC Study: Assessing barriers to community engagement in applying tobacco control lessons to cannabis policy. The research scientist will be part of the Getting it Right from the Start broader team and may also support other ongoing research and advocacy efforts, and will help build our network of community partners across the State of California.
Through a series of surveys and interviews over a three year period, this specific project aims to address three main questions: 1) What are the facilitators and barriers to engagement of traditional California tobacco control and substance abuse partners in applying tobacco control lessons to cannabis policy; 2) What are the attitudes, practices, and knowledge of policymakers towards applying these lessons to cannabis policy; and 3) What is the effectiveness of an innovative tool, the California Local Cannabis Policy Scorecard, in reaching and engaging these stakeholders.
This position may work partially remotely. In-person duties will be performed in Berkeley, CA. Candidates in the Bay Area or willing to relocate are preferred.

Job Brief
Vertosa is looking for a Research Scientist experienced in food science, formulation, and surface chemistry to merge scientific development into natural ingredients and create innovative products. This Research Scientist will support the VP of R&D to assist in product development and production scale-up along with the daily execution of R&D-related lab activities. Responsibilities
- Develop new ingredient combinations to improve the water solubility of plant extracts, including emulsion and water-soluble powders.
- Research advanced nanoemulsion and microemulsion systems through screening new ingredients and designing new formulas to deliver targeted effects including clarity, flavor, organic label, controlled release and beyond.
- Research water-soluble powder via various combinations of processing technology and ingredient combination optionality.
- Evaluate stability, compatibility, shelf life, safety and basic specs for newly developed emulsion and powder products.
- Provide guidance on how emulsion(s) and powder(s) can be best utilized in the downstream products: i.e., ingredient compatibility, use level, stability conditions, manufacturing requirement and others.

Requirements
- Master’s degree or above in emulsion chemistry, food science with experience in formulation.
- 5+ years industrial experience.
- Hands-on experience with processing equipment including, but not limited to: sonicator, homogenizer, microfluidizer, spray dryer, freeze dryer.
- Familiarity with surface chemistry analytical tools, including dynamic light scattering, surface tension, contact angle and beyond.
- Have successful experience in creating new food ingredients or formulas that solve a particular problem or deliver a special benefit.
- Expertise in food safety, ingredient regulation and labeling requirements are a plus.
- Familiar with food and beverage co-packing and production processes.
- Excellent communication -- including writing, speaking and interpersonal communication.

We are recruiting a research scientist to work on our Getting it Right from the Start: Advancing Public Health & Equity in Cannabis Policy project, which is part of PHI’s Prevention Policy group. The project works at the interface of research and policy advocacy. The main initial focus of this position is a study examining how cannabis policy varies across jurisdictions in California and how that affects use by youth. The selected candidate will also collaborate on research ranging in topics from use during pregnancy to the effects of marijuana ads on teen vs older people’s brains. We are looking for an individual with strong research skills particularly in quantitative methods and longitudinal analyses methods, as we are tracking change over time in key health outcomes in relation to state and local policy. Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Research Director, the Research Scientist I (RSI) is responsible for applying knowledge, skills, and experience and performing complex data analysis related to cannabis epidemiology and law. The RSI will be responsible for managing a research study, coordinating with external partners and providing epidemiological support for study design and data analysis, creating, managing and analyzing databases, and managing project activities for research purposes. This is interdisciplinary cannabis research looking primarily at determinants of youth use that spans law, epidemiologic methods, biostatistics, substance use, and some marketing research. A strong background in quantitative methods, particularly experience conducting longitudinal analysis is required; experience with nested models and time series-analysis is desirable.
The RSI will participate in drafting scientific publications, summary materials, and presentations as well as grant writing activities, including budget development and management. Based on performance, the RSI will have future opportunities to become credentialed and apply for external funding for independent research projects.
The RSI will work under the supervision of the senior and research directors to a) maintain the California Cannabis Local laws Database, and 2) analyze the California Healthy Kids Survey Data on cannabis use by California teens in relation to variation in local cannabis law over time. They will also have the opportunity to work with other research projects of the group which primarily focus on the interface between how cannabis policy is being implemented and what the effects are on a range of health and utilization outcomes, as well as to support the team’s policy advocacy efforts. The RSI will be the lead analyst in the use of longitudinal analysis such as time series and other methods for examining changes in youth use over time in relation to policy changes. The RSI will advise on methods and may help other staff or interns, and as needed, delegate work, and resolve problems to support research activities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead, coordinate and collaborate with internal and external researchers on an existing project examining youth use of cannabis in relation to local law in the State of California;
- Conduct cross-sectional and longitudinal statistical analyses utilizing the California Healthy Kids Survey, and the California Cannabis Local Laws Database over a 5 year period encompassing legalization;
- Provide statistical and analytic support to other research projects of the group;
- Develop and track project task lists, ensuring deliverables are met, drafting progress reports for funding agencies, and monitoring project budgets;
- Support development of new projects and funding opportunities by developing budgets, scope of work, submitting applications for IRB approval, and providing scientific support;
- Support advocacy and dissemination efforts around cannabis policy and public health, including providing data support;
- Present and summarize data at public forums, in peer-reviewed journals, reports, and at scientific conferences;
- Maintain professional competence by studying scientific and technical literature, by attending approved continuing education classes, and by participating in conferences and symposiums.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree;
- At least 3 years of research experience in public health or social sciences;
- Experience with statistical software, Stata desirable and/or SAS or SPSS;

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. at the New York State Psychiatric Institute is seeking a Research Scientist. Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and the co-investigators, the scientist will be involved in clinical evaluations of participants enrolled in the funded research projects. The primary project is investigating the brain (using fMRI) and behavioral mechanisms of choices for cannabis, and an alternative reward in cannabis smokers with and without cannabis use disorder. Two other pilot studies entail examining stress response, using the Trier Social Stress Test. One study will examine the robustness of administering the TSST remotely to cannabis users and another will examine response to the TSST in transgender individuals.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct structured diagnostic interviews (SCID and/or MINI) to make clinical diagnoses and write detailed narratives;
- Conduct telephone interviews with peer contacts;
- Conduct a clinician-administered early trauma inventory;
- Assist with other clinical and research aspects (e.g., telephone screening, consenting) of research participants;
- Provide clinical assistance on other projects the Investigators may be involved in;

- Facilitate product development from ideation to manufacturing scale up to product launch
- Maintain documentation of intellectual property by maintaining a laboratory notebook and proper management of Experimental Operating Procedures
- Continuous monitoring of cutting-edge technologies and applications regarding cannabis products
- Engineering and process design, continuous improvement, new manufacturing technologies

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- At least 4 years in cannabis industry product development
- Specific knowledge of cannabinoids and terpene chemistry
- Specific knowledge of cGMP, pharmaceutical manufacturing methods and engineering principles
- Strong knowledge of cannabis extraction methodology and post processing
- Strong project management ability
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to communicate in a proactive and solutions-focused manner, including keeping management aware of potential issues
- Ability to think critically and operate independently
- Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Communicate effectively with ability to function in a team environment
- Ability to effectively organize, multitask, and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment
- Detail oriented with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment problems
- Ability to pass a Level 2 Background Screening
- Must be at least 21 years old
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25lbs to a minimum height of 5 feet and able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet, with or without mechanical assistance
- Must be able to work seated/standing as appropriate at workstations for extended periods of time, maintain body equilibrium while climbing ladders, stairways, stopping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, and use hands/fingers to hold, grasp, turn, pick, pinch frequently/constantly to complete tasks
- Must be able to handle organic matter daily, able to wear PPE as appropriate (eye, face, hand, arm, head, foot, body, fall protection), and able to be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions while wearing PPE (95 degrees or greater)
- Must have visual acuity with/without job aids to perform activities such as; reading, viewing a computer terminal, visual inspection involving small parts/details. Clarity of vision at 20 ft or more in day and night/dark conditions
- Must be able to speak and communicate verbally at conversation levels with co-workers, vendors, etc. (Moderate noise)
WORK SCHEDULE:
- 40+ hours weekly with flexible hours depending on department needs. Must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays

The Stella laboratory is working in collaboration with the Zweifel laboratory on the development of new therapeutics for the treatment of devastating neurological diseases, including therapeutics that target the endocannabinoid signaling system. Cannabinoids, the bioactive components produced by the Cannabis plant, have medical properties that are remarkably different from currently available standard of care.
The research projects performed in the Stella and Zweifel laboratories will leverage biochemical and cells in culture approaches, and preclinical mouse models, to identify the molecular mechanisms that mediate the therapeutic properties of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids, with the goal of developing transformative new medicines to treat patients affected by neurological diseases.

Opportunity Summary: PIRE is seeking Investigators to join our Center located in Berkeley, CA. This opportunity is open to senior level investigators – and/or a small team of investigators– who are positioned to substantially contribute to PIRE’s growing drug and drug policy portfolio or other research agenda. We also have positions at our five other locations: Albuquerque, NM, Providence, RI, Louisville, KY, Chapel Hill, NC, and the Calverton Center located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area,.
Specifically, we invite letters of introduction from senior level investigators who have:
- Current funding from NIH, CDC and/or other agencies that fund scientific research,
- A track record of relevant publications in high impact journals, and
- Strong skills in research collaboration and management.
Successful applicants will be expected to pursue their own research while collaborating with other PIRE scientists in areas of mutual interest. PIRE is prepared to assist researchers submit applications with startup funding, administrative support and collaborative scientific support. Employment is contingent upon successful awards.

PIRE has a diverse portfolio of scientific research focusing on alcohol and drug use and their effects on public health and safety. We have a rich blend of NIH, NHTSA, SAMHSA and Foundation funded work focusing on various drugs of abuse, including prescription drugs, marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine and related health and public health problems (e.g. HIV, HCV, overdose, driving fatalities, criminology). We are specifically expanding our drug related research but are not limiting this opportunity. Our scientists examine risk factors and outcomes at both the individual and structural levels, with a focus on informing public policy and/or understanding the specific impacts of policies on health. Our studies employ a diverse range of research methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative methods and a variety of innovative sampling methods. Among these studies are NHTSA- and NIH-funded roadside surveys that are measuring the prevalence of drug use among drivers using biological measures, the effects of marijuana legalization on prevalence among drivers, and the effects of drugs on crash risk.
Anchoring our research portfolio on the west coast is the Prevention Research Center (PRC) in Oakland, CA. PRC is one of 27 centers sponsored by the NIAAA. PRC was formed in 1983 and is the only such center that specializes in the environmental prevention. PRC's focus is on conducting research to understand better the social and physical environments that influence individual behavior that leads to alcohol and drug misuse. Recent PRC drug research includes studies of the geographical distribution of medical marijuana dispensaries as well as effects of decriminalization and legalization of marijuana.
