Cannabis Lab Analysis Standards Program Lead Chemist in our Hemp Program!

The Hemp Program supports domestic and international trade of hemp plant material and hemp derived products, by providing sampling, testing, inspection, and licensing services that verify the pre-harvest condition, and THC concentration of hemp grown in the State.

WSDA, Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB), and the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) have formed an interagency program to adopt and establish rule and statewide guidance for cannabis laboratory quality standards conducting analysis of recreational and medicinal cannabis with THC levels greater than 0.3 percent. WSDA has been designated as the lead agency by the Washington State Legislature in statute (RCW 15.150). The program must coordinate among all participating agencies on agency policies, actions, and regulatory activities that relate to cannabis testing laboratory quality standards.

The program also advises WSDA on implementation and maintenance of cannabis testing laboratory quality standards topics including, but not limited to, analytical methods; validation protocols; quality assurance and quality control practices; project planning and sampling guides; and other topics as necessary to fulfill the purposes of the program and the legislation.

The Cannabis Lab Analysis Standards Program (CLASP)
Lead Chemist is the subject matter lead for the chemical (pesticide, heavy metals and microbials) laboratory analysis for cannabis and assists in the development of cannabis laboratory analysis standards in conjunction with the CLASP interagency team members. The incumbent will directly report to the Cannabis Lab Analysis Standards Program (CLASP) Lead. This position serves as WSDA’s expert scientific and chemical specialist responsible for researching, developing, and establishing cannabis analysis standards for laboratory testing. Cannabis testing laboratory quality standards must include but are not limited to approved methods for testing cannabis for compliance with product standards established by rule by the LCB or the DOH; method validation protocols; and performance measures and criteria applied to testing of cannabis products. This position involves significant coordination and liaison with LCB, and DOH, and as well as other state agencies, federal agencies, and local governments. In addition, this position will coordinate with the Department of Ecology, which is the agency responsible for the accreditation of cannabis analysis labs to the standards established by the interagency team.
In addition, this position will assist in the coordination efforts to establish, maintain, and update cannabis testing laboratory quality standards by rule. WSDA rules establishing laboratory testing protocols will provide the baseline information that the ECY accreditation program needs to evaluate and accredit testing laboratories. Testing laboratories must adhere to laboratory quality standards adopted by WSDA.

Duties

Include, but not limited to:

• 
  Researches, develops, establishes, and maintains approved cannabis laboratory quality standards, including approved methods for testing cannabis for compliance with product standards (pesticides, heavy metals, and microbials), method validation protocols, performance measures and criteria standards applied to the testing of cannabis products.
• Participates in the formulation and direction of state-wide policy and rules regarding cannabis testing standards, chemical research, and chemical investigative functions; evaluates needs and feasibility of initiating or expanding, reducing, or eliminating portions of the lab standards program; effectively recommends changes indicated.
• Uses sound and relevant science when making modifications and updates to the adopted laboratory quality standards and supporting documents.
• Assists in the creation of cannabis laboratory standards guidance or SOP documents and manuals to be used by laboratories and accreditation providers.
• Performs regular and frequent review of the evolving original chemical research related to cannabis; coordinates with CLASP team and gives technical assistance in areas of research planning and development of standards.
• Participates in interagency CLASP meetings.
• Assists in developing rule and participate in rulemaking efforts, provide recommendations for rule modifications and updates based on new research and best practices.

Qualifications

Who should apply?
Professionals with:
A Bachelor's degree with a major in chemistry OR a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry.
AND
Six (6) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory including at least one (1) year of experience as a lead in a specialized field of chemistry or supervising professional chemists.
Note: A Master's degree will substitute for two years of the required experience, or a Ph.D. degree will substitute for three years of the required experience provided a bachelor's degree and the required college-level chemistry have been achieved.
In addition to the above qualifications, the following desired knowledge, skills, and abilities will make your application more competitive:

• 
  Master’s degree in chemistry or a directly related field and four or more years of experience conducting research and analyzing policies, laws, rules, or regulations or comparable combination of graduate education and experience.
• Two or more years of data analysis experience, including but not limited to: descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, modeling, data forensics, and forecasting
• Laboratory experience conducting chemical analysis for pesticides, heavy metals, and microbials, and/or establishing laboratory standards or accreditation standards.
• Experience or knowledge of the cannabis industry, in either the producer, processor and/or retail levels.

Job Purpose:

The lead analytical chemist’s primary responsibilities include processing client samples, analyzing data, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The lead analytical chemist is responsible for the operational performance of the assigned laboratory. This role oversees the day-to-day operations and ensures compliance standards for quality and safety.

The ideal candidate will have either industrial or academic experience (2-5 years) with instruments and techniques that include liquid and gas chromatography (HPLC-DAD, LC-MS, GC-MS), trace metal analysis (ICPMS) and/or wet chemistry techniques.

Successful candidates will be familiar with good laboratory practices and work closely with our lab analysts, technicians and management team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• The lead analytical chemist will assist in sample intake, homogenization, sample preparation, analyze samples consisting of a variety of matrices using traditional laboratory technologies including, but not limited to, HPLC, GC/MS, LC/MS, and ICP/MS
• Interpret and evaluate data in terms of accuracy, precision, trends, and quality control requirements
• Maintain laboratory equipment by cleaning, replacing parts, and otherwise ensuring ongoing proper working order, and the reporting of equipment issues to management
• Collaborate with the laboratory team to meet reporting deadlines.
• Train incoming analysts and technicians on methodology
• Maintain high productivity, keen attention to detail, and consistent multi- tasking while yielding a low testing error rate.
• Perform daily lab operations, including production, process evaluation, and monitoring. Daily Data verification and final review.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory policies and procedures, state regulations, and ISO-17025 quality management system.
• Assist scientific director with analytical method development and validation
• Ability to accurately prepare calibration curves, quality control samples, set up, run, maintain, and troubleshoot GC (GCMS, GCMSMS) and LC (HPLC DAD, LCMSMS)
• Partner with the Quality Assurance Team to assure method and SOP compliance.
• Ensuring that SOPs are followed, maintained and improved as well as meet regulatory requirements
• Recommend the purchasing of lab supplies and equipment as needed
• Ensure test equipment is clean, maintained and in good working order

Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

• Strong understanding of standard laboratory protocol and experience working with cannabis laboratory analytical equipment (i.e., HPLC, GC- MSMS, LCMSMS, ICP-MS)
• Experience working with the following Agilent instrumentation: GC/MS-FID, ICP/MS, HPLC, LC/MS/MS and GC/MS/MS
• Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively work, influence, problem solve, and communicate with all levels of the organization.
• Exceptional analytical skills with effective judgment and decision-making capabilities.
• Ability to multi-task and work in a dynamic, fast-paced deadline environment and maintain composure during challenging and/or complex situations
• Ability to maintain high degree of attention to detail and accuracy.
• Knowledge of Agilent instruments software (Mass Hunter, open lab and
• ChemStation) strongly desired.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Qualifications:

• 2-5 years of full-time practical experience in an analytical chemistry setting.
• Working experience in environmental, food safety or forensic laboratories preferred
• Experience working with a wide range of analytical testing protocols.
• Professional knowledge and experience with HPLC, LC/MS, GC, GC/MS or ICPMS.
• Experience with ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accreditation processes.

Education & Experience:

• Minimum bachelor’s degree in science , Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering or Environmental Sciences required.
• 2+ years of relevant laboratory operations experience.
• Exposure to the cannabis industry desired

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

• Implement established Surterra Therapeutics and Industry best practices for testing therapeutic cannabis-based products. Testing to include potency, heavy metal, pesticide and microbiologic contamination
• Be responsible for daily duties related to analytic testing process of therapeutic cannabis-based products
• Analytical testing includes potency; heavy metals; pesticides; residual solvents, and microbiologic contamination using industrial standard instruments including, but not limited to, GCMS, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and HPLC
• Develop and maintain relevant analytical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, control charts and instrument certifications
• Maintain product and testing inventory and comply with the inventory tracking system
• Maintain appropriate records related to quality control and testing procedures and results
• Assist in recommendations for scalable procedures as company grows, support work area processes and product development
• Work alongside the manufacturing and extraction teams to meet production and quality related goals
• Assist Lead Processing Technician when required for processing or extraction processes
• Limited Travel between cultivation/processing and lab facilities
• Manage duties and responsibilities of additional chemists and technicians and provide training to project team members for routine analyses
• Interface directly with third-party testing companies to interpret results, validate testing procedures and analyze data
• Physical demands include lifting 20-50 pounds, as needed

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS YOU'LL BRING

Required

Job Description: Lead Chemist

Position Summary:

Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience required. We are seeking an analytical chemist to work in a high-volume, regulated Cannabis laboratory. The candidate will become proficient in the analysis of samples for cannabinoid concentration, residual solvents and terpenoids using HPLC, GC-FID, LC-Mass Spec 3Q and ICP-MS and GC-MS technology. The candidate must be able to work as part of a team in a high-volume and rapidly evolving workplace. Experience working in a Cannabis laboratory is a plus but we will accept candidates with experience using similar technologies in Environmental, Pharmaceutical or Nutraceutical laboratories.

The candidate must be dependable, punctual and maintain positive attitude even in high stress situations; must be willing to work with medical cannabis and industrial hemp and must pass background check and be willing to obtain medical cannabis card (company paid) until background check and state lab agent cards are available.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Schedule sample workflow for preparation and analysis by due date, hold time and turnaround time requirements.

• Perform all initial and continuing calibration requirements for sample analysis.

• Learn and become proficient performing our in-house methods using HPLC, GC/MS, GC-FID and

other techniques as required.

• Review data and final reports for completeness and accuracy.

• Maintain and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation and other laboratory equipment.

• Order supplies as needed, liaison with clients regarding analytical results and any technical issues.

• Assist with other tasks as needed within the company.

• Perform quality work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

• Perform calibrations for safety equipment and laboratory instrumentation

• Participate in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the laboratory.

• Perform other duties as required.

Areas of Specialization Desired:

• Prior experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (ISO, NELAC, GMP).

· Prior experience working in a cannabis laboratory.

· Prior experience running HPLC, GC or GCMS methods.

Requirements:

· Candidate should have at least a BA/BS in science, such as: Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Science.

Should possess excellent verbal and written skills in English and computer skills

(Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Suite)

Volta Biotech is a marijuana/cbd processing and refinement company. We can process 80 pounds every 20 minutes with food grade ethanol - possibly the biggest capacity in the state. We sell bulk CBD oil and water soluble ingredients to end-formulators nationwide and have our own product line of vape cartridges, dose controlled vaporizers, and water soluble powder to be sold on Amazon. We are cashless and all transactions occur on our websites.

Our main focus for the next 30 days is to get our electrical installed, our equipment functioning, and formulate our products, then increase production as demand for our products grow.

We're looking for two passionate and professional people to fill two laboratory positions. We need one of the hires to be the processing lead responsible for managing, operating, and reporting on, a state-of-the-art, compliant, extraction/processing facility and HAS experience in a position like this. We are looking for a highly dedicated individual who is self-driven, excellent communicator, who has extensive experience with being a cannabis processor, and who has extensive knowledge of the cannabis industry. The other chemist should have chromatography experience.
Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related Chemistry field experience preferred.
Prior GMP production experience preferred.
Previous experience in cannabis field preferred.

Lead Chemist

Job Summary

Green Sprout Labs, a cannabis extraction and purification facility, seeks a lead chemist for the extraction and distillation of biologically derived materials for both the medicinal and recreational cannabis markets. The lead chemist maintains quality control measures to ensure high quality product and carries out day-to-day tasks including: prepping, extracting, and formulation. The lead chemist must monitor and maintain the facility in accordance with state and local regulations as well as the standards set by Green Sprout Labs.

Core Duties

• Production Chemistry [60%]

• Preparation of dried cannabis for extraction
• Extraction of active and inactive (aesthetic) media from bulk bio-materials
• Distillation and purification of extracts
• Process improvements related to wet chemistry and laboratory processes
• Product formulation in concert with remainder of lab team
• Production planning, delegation, prioritization, and help

• Quality Management [20%]

• Operating within and contributing to a quality management system (QMS)
• Contribution to and authorship of GLP/GMP practices
• Authorship of and adherence to standard operating procedures
• Documentation and review of data for all in-lab processes

• Subject Matter Expert [10%]

• Develop expertise in cannabis extraction
• Develop expertise in new extraction technology and its application to final consumer products

Required Experience, Education, and Skills

• BS in chemistry/biochemistry (or an aligned field)

• Willing to submit and pass a criminal background check. A pending charge or conviction within the past 10 years for a controlled substance-related felony may invalidate hiring eligibility unless written permission is given by the licensing agency.

• Strong interpersonal skills including excellent communication, ability to listen, empathize, be flexible in his/her thinking, and build consensus.

• Experience in data entry, data management, and data analysis for continuous improvement

Desired Experience, Education, and Skills

• Applicants should have 0-5 years of experience with wet chemistry and extraction processes

• Applicants should also possess safe in-lab work practices and have a strong desire to develop into a subject matter expert (SME) on the processing of cannabis-derived materials.
