Cannabis Lab Analysis Standards Program Lead Microbiologist in our Hemp Program!
The Hemp Program supports domestic and international trade of hemp plant material and hemp derived products, by providing sampling, testing, inspection, and licensing services that verify the pre-harvest condition, and THC concentration of hemp grown in the State.
WSDA, Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB), and the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) have formed an interagency program to adopt and establish rule and statewide guidance for cannabis laboratory quality standards conducting analysis of recreational and medicinal cannabis with THC levels greater than 0.3 percent. WSDA has been designated as the lead agency by the Washington State Legislature in statute (RCW 15.150). The program must coordinate among all participating agencies on agency policies, actions, and regulatory activities that relate to cannabis testing laboratory quality standards.
The program also advises WSDA on implementation and maintenance of cannabis testing laboratory quality standards topics including, but not limited to, analytical methods; validation protocols; quality assurance and quality control practices; project planning and sampling guides; and other topics as necessary to fulfill the purposes of the program and the legislation.
The Cannabis Lab Analysis Standards Program (CLASP) Lead Microbiologist is the subject matter lead for the microbiological laboratory analysis for cannabis and assists in the development of cannabis laboratory analysis standards in conjunction with the CLASP interagency team members. The incumbent will directly report to the Cannabis Lab Analysis Standards Program (CLASP) Lead. This position serves as a scientific and microbiological specialist responsible for researching, developing, and establishing cannabis analysis standards for laboratory testing. Cannabis testing laboratory quality standards must include but are not limited to approved methods for testing cannabis for compliance with product standards established by rule by the LCB or the DOH; method validation protocols; and performance measures and criteria applied to testing of cannabis products. This position involves significant coordination and liaison with LCB, and DOH, and as well as other state agencies, federal agencies, and local governments. In addition, this position will coordinate with the Department of Ecology, which is the agency responsible for the accreditation of cannabis analysis labs to the standards established by the interagency team.
In addition, this position will assist in the coordination efforts to establish, maintain, and update cannabis testing laboratory quality standards by rule. WSDA rules establishing laboratory testing protocols will provide the baseline information that the ECY accreditation program needs to evaluate and accredit testing laboratories. Testing laboratories must adhere to laboratory quality standards adopted by WSDA.

Duties
Include, but not limited to:
Researches, develops, establishes, and maintains approved cannabis laboratory quality standards, including approved methods for testing cannabis for compliance with product standards (pesticides, heavy metals, and microbials), method validation protocols, performance measures and criteria standards applied to the testing of cannabis products.- Participates in the formulation and direction of state-wide policy and rules regarding cannabis testing standards, chemical research, and chemical investigative functions; evaluates needs and feasibility of initiating or expanding, reducing, or eliminating portions of the lab standards program; effectively recommends changes indicated.
- Uses sound and relevant science when making modifications and updates to the adopted laboratory quality standards and supporting documents.
- Assists in the creation of cannabis laboratory standards guidance or SOP documents and manuals to be used by laboratories and accreditation providers.
- Performs regular and frequent review of the evolving original chemical research related to cannabis; coordinates with CLASP team and gives technical assistance in areas of research planning and development of standards.
- Participates in interagency CLASP meetings.

Cannabis and Hemp Microbiologist
Summary:
Rapidly Expanding Cannabis/Hemp Testing Lab is seeking a professional and experienced Microbiologist. This position will perform routine testing of Cannabis/Hemp flowers, extracts, edibles, and oils for an Internal Testing Lab (ITL) in Worcester, MA. The position will report to the Laboratory Director.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Oversee and perform the preparation and analysis of samples consisting of a variety of matrices using qPCR and 3M Petrifilm plating.
- Data entry, sample intake and sample management using the LIMS and word processing as required.
- Maintain inventory of samples, laboratory supplies, sample storage and disposal, cleaning, and other supporting lab processes.
- Properly dispose of chemical and biohazard waste.
- Cleaning and maintenance of equipment, laboratory glassware and laboratory facility.
- Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
- Lead and participate in training and continuous improvement projects.
- Takes ownership of issues and follows through to resolution.
- Ensure customer results are reported quickly and accurately, meeting the laboratory performance metrics.

Basic Purpose:

Job Summary
The individual will be responsible for maintenance of microbiology equipment, primarily automated instrumentation as well as other standard and non-standard microbiological instrumentation. The Microbiologist will conduct, troubleshoot and oversee microbiological analysis of cannabis flower, concentrates and infused products as required by state cannabis regulatory body regulations within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. The Microbiologist will be responsible for coordinating scheduling with the Laboratory Manager, conducting sample analysis, identifying areas where efficiencies can be implemented into laboratory process workflows, and supporting sales meetings as requested by laboratory management. As time allows, the Microbiologist will also be cross-trained to conduct sample preparation and extraction for subsequent chemical analyses.
The Microbiologist will be responsible for training and oversight of employees working in the microbiology area.
Past job experience or training gained obtaining a master’s degree appropriate to microbiology are preferred. The Microbiologist is expected to have developed an ability to optimize the laboratory workflows to maximize throughput and efficiency while maintaining a high level of quality. Additionally, the individual must be able to represent Smithers to clients both over the phone and in person and transmit a professional image.
A. Job Duties
Essential Functions:
1. Conduct sample analysis in accordance with validated methods and SOPs
2. Ensure timely reporting of results to meet deadlines.

The Microbiologist will be accountable for conducting tests and preparing documentation for Certus Bioscience. This is an exciting opportunity to work in the emerging and fast paced environment of cannabis laboratory testing. The successful candidate will be a Microbiologist at our Kansas City location and will report directly to the Laboratory Director. The candidate will be responsible for the all the steps involved in sample analysis for state mandated compliance testing of cannabis products.
This position requires knowledge of Microbiology plating techniques and qPCR protocols. Analytical methods utilized in the lab are already established and validated, however, some experience with method development, optimization and validation is beneficial. Prior lab experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Performs in all assigned areas of the laboratory. Provides accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures to fulfill the requests of the customer.
- Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures to ensure that all samples are completed within a specific time frame.
- Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the Laboratory Director to guarantee the lab maintains utmost quality.

NCTL is a production lab that analyzes cannabis flower, concentrates, and processed products for licensed producers throughout the state. Our team is looking for a Microbiologist to perform microbiological testing on customer samples according to approved laboratory methods using proper manual microbiological procedures and advanced instrumentation.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Perform various microbial analyses on customer samples such as total coliform, enterobacteria, E. coli, and salmonella using manual plate count and film plate methods following laboratory standard operating procedures and ensuring adherence to quality assurance and quality control requirements.
- Perform validation, troubleshooting, and maintenance on new and existing microbial techniques.
- Perform Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) methods to detect and quantify pathogens of interest in customer samples. This includes the ability to interpret qPCR data.
