WHAT IS REQUIRED:

How you'll spend your time:

• Active involvement in consulting services to these entrepreneurial companies in establishing operations, structure of entities and assisting in preparation of forecasts and projections.


• Consult with clients on unique cannabis topics including: costing of inventory, Sections 280E and 471 compliance and structuring transactions and entities.


• Assessing the tax efficiency of client’s cost of goods sold values and other production costs


• Advising clients on structuring M&A Activity, both on the buy or sell side of the transaction


• Researching opportunities for reducing tax obligations through cost segregation and credits (energy, R&D and incentives)


• Consulting with clients on multi-state and local tax matters


• Overseeing the preparation of various Federal and State tax filings


• Network with other industry representatives to promote our brand in this tight knit sector


• Researching relevant and often unique tax issues and resolutions/recommendations for those issues


• Identifying tax planning opportunities for stakeholder


• Staying abreast of developments and changes in Federal, state and local laws


• Develop tax planning strategies for owners and senior management in an effort to create wealth


• Conduct constructive discussions with team members on their evaluations and providing constructive counsel


• Training and supervision of staff accountants

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting
• Knowledge of the basic accounting concepts
• Have insight and demonstrate ability to handle in-charge responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare simple financial statements.
• Reconcile bank accounts and trace discrepancies.
• Reconcile subsidiary accounts to control accounts.
• Assist in preparation and mailing of confirmation requests.
• Schedule confirmations returned, list exceptions, and follow up on their disposition.
• Perform, or assist in, inventory observations.
• Assist with engagement planning.
• Perform interim accounting services (monthly or quarterly) of small companies where the work is of a repetitive nature and prepare substantiating work papers in a format that is sufficiently detailed for a reviewer to evaluate.
• Excerpt leases, minutes, and other documents and prepare transmittal of journal entries to clients.
• Prepare work papers that are organized, neat, cross-referenced, and supported by conclusions.
• Search for unrecorded liabilities by examining unpaid bills, accounts payable and disbursements after balance sheet date.
• Take ownership of engagements, meet (or beat) established deadlines and budgets.
• Update and calculate depreciation and amortization and enter asset activity into depreciation software.
• Prepare payroll tax, sales and other local tax, personal property and simple to average income tax returns.
• Be able to compile raw data into trial balance format, including recapping cash receipts and disbursements.
• Prepare tax returns as needed using HBK software.
• Prepare tax adjusting journal entries tax reconciliation and perform import into tax software.
• Identify potential management letter comments.
• Practice effective communication when completing all tasks.
• Identify problem areas that need to be discussed with engagement leader.
• Follow regulations and professional ethics of the AICPA and the state society.
• Follow firm procedures and comply with firm policies as outlined in the Human Resource Manual.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all client and firm business.
• Keep up to date on all professional pronouncements.
• Ability to work overtime as required.
• Maintain professional conduct at client offices and internally.
• Take the CPA exam at every offering and pass it within two years of hire.
• Know how to use reference materials as needed using HBK resources in researching situations involving non-complex tax questions.
• Know how to use reference materials such as PPC and CCH in researching non-complex accounting questions.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 3+ years of previous public accounting experience.
• Successful candidate should have CPA or on a timeline of obtaining within a reasonable amount of time from date of hire.
• Ability to research and resolve complex issues with minimal oversight.
• Experience in planning and supervising larger engagement, previous tax return preparation experience is required.
• Solid research and writing skills, excellent verbal communication and presentation skills and the ability to interact with all levels of staff and clients.
• A competent working knowledge of accounting, auditing and tax software is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for preparing, reviewing, and/or executing assigned tax returns and accounting/consulting projects, working directly with Partners and Senior Managers
• Complete moderately complex projects accurately, thoroughly, and efficiently
• Supervising and leading members of our internal team to ensure client engagements and projects are delivered in a timely manner
• Participate with more experienced personnel in coordinating large client engagements, identification of problems, tax law and computer model analysis and helping clients determine optimal strategies
• Continually participate in professional and personal development, including appropriate technical trainings
• Demonstrate leadership skills in support of all Firm policies and procedures to promote teamwork and loyalty
• Promote and create positive client and team member impressions by exhibiting professional demeanor, competence, and ability

• Research and stay up to date with changes in tax regulation and develop tax planning skills at the federal and state level
• Work as an individual contributor and as part of a team to support varying client engagements, possibly across multiple industries which may include Technology, Real Estate, Education, Cannabis, Manufacturing, Education, Non-Profit and more
• Collaborate and communicate regularly with a team of professionals on client projects through multiple channels including meetings, chat, and email
• Develop skills in accounting software through instructor-lead courses, self-guided learnings, workflow updates, and on the job training
• Work toward the completion of CPA certification with the support of Armanino through prep materials and classes

WHAT IS REQUIRED:

• 
  Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
• Must be eligible to sit for the CPA exam in home office state
• Completion of a bachelor's or master's degree in accounting, finance, or related field with a graduation date between December 2022 – June 2023 preferred
• Public accounting experience preferred
• Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred

About the position:

• Opportunity to work in fast-growing and dynamic industries, with a current focus on the cannabis (marijuana, both medical and adult-use, hemp and hemp derivatives) and cannabis-technology industries


• Opportunity to participate in complex investment, corporate structuring and transactional business activities and address the impacts on tax decisions and reporting

Our ideal candidate:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required


• CPA or CPA candidate required


• 2-5 years in tax senior or manager position required

• Detail-oriented, technical tax experience preferred with interest in continued learning and skills advancement


• Ability to utilize knowledge and skills to participate in corporate strategic and tax planning
• Tax reporting experience with Partnerships, C-Corps., S-Corps. and joint ventures


• Experience with CCH Suite of Applications


• Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

This position can be based in Denver, CO; Scottsdale, AZ; Raleigh, NC; or Little Rock, AR (Firm Headquarters).

On-site or hybrid location preferred, remote strongly considered.

Required Skills

Duties include but not limited to:

• Research tax issues and filing requirements that affect tax compliance.

• Review tax returns and ensure accuracy and completeness.

• Research complex tax issues using internal revenue code, treasury regulations and other relevant authorities/guidance.

• Draft tax technical memorandums.

• Serve as the Engagement Manager on specific client accounts, taking responsibility for pre-engagement planning, execution, and final deliverable development.

• Identify opportunities to expand the scope of current engagements through identification of current client needs and target client requirements.

• Actively participate in proposal development, at the direction of management, and take a lead role responding to requests for proposal.

• Provide regular performance feedback as well as deliver timely performance evaluations.

• Develop subordinates' technical and industry skills and encourage growth.

• Demonstrate initiative, vision, resourcefulness, creativity and independent thinking. Lead by example.

Required Experience:

• Education: BS/BA accounting preferred; MST preferred, CPA required

• Minimum of 3-7 years tax experience in a public accounting; Cannabis, M&D, or Agriculture tax experience preferred

• Heavy Partnership and Corp experience preferred

• Demonstrated writing skills a must; proposal development experience desired

• Demonstrated management skills.

• Strong tax research and writing skills

• Proven competence with MS Office and tax compliance and research software

• Solid organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to multi-task
