Job Summary:
The Junior Grower is responsible for assisting certain aspects of the seeding and greenhouse operations including, but not limited to: the daily operations regarding seeding and planting, inventories, IPM practices, data collection, scheduling, pool water adjustments, and maintaining optimal greenhouse conditions. This position will supplement leadership in operation and cover for the growers, when not present. The Assistant works closely with Quality Control, Production, and Maintenance departments. This Position is responsible for following the direction of the grower. Teammate supports and performs all GH related duties to ensure goals are met. Teammate also, ensures that growing plans are executed efficiently, accurately and in accordance with required timing to achieve optimal growth in all crops.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works in the GH: unloads, spaces, harvests, and loads
- Checks product for quality and cleans products as necessary
- Monitors crops for optimal growth and maintains a proper climate in greenhouses.
- Performs irrigation of crops using automated and manual systems.
- Performs and monitors insect and disease control measures.
- Performs fertilization of crops.
- Records pesticide applications and maintains irrigation logs on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis as needed.
- Covers weekend duties as required by the monthly schedule.
- Reports on a weekly basis to apprise management of crop progress.
- Reports any departmental discrepancies or problems.
- Adheres to all safety and food safety guidelines.
- Reports and is accountable for notifying any observed safety concerns.
- Maintains a clean working environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned by other member of management.
- Ensure high quality of products.
- Trains, assigns tasks, and monitors work of any employee assigned to the crop production process.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Degree in Horticulture or combination education & experience
Experience: 2yrs. practical growing in commercial/retail greenhouse and 2yrs. with both manual and automatic irrigation systems
Language Fluency: No specific language requirements; bi-lingual English/Spanish fluency preferred.
Technology: No specific technology requirements; basic computer and keyboarding skills preferred.
Licensure: No specific licensure required.
Credentials: No specific professional credentials required.
Schedule: Available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends.
REQUIRED PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Manual Dexterity: Ability to quickly move your hands and arms sufficiently to grasp, hold, finely manipulate and assemble herbs and packaging.
Muscle Strength & Flexibility: Ability to bend, reach, stoop, squat, pivot, turn, balance, walk, pus, pull, and lift and carry up to 50lbs.
Trunk Strength: Ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support a standing position for sustained periods over time without ‘giving out.
Sustained Fast Pace: Ability to work at a very fast sustained pace without reduction in quality, food safety and workplace safety compliance.
Not Allergic: Ability to breathe, touch and work around fresh herbs and leafy produce safely.

Under the guidance of the Farm Manager, the Assistant Grower will be responsible in coordination with the Grower of the organization, coordination and implementation of greenhouse work and activities. This includes the coordination of sanitation, crop monitoring, cultural control, resistant cultivars and biological and chemical control, to drive healthy plant growth and volume production.
To be successful in this role, the incumbent will interact with other Greenhouse team members on a daily basis and work closely with the Assistant Labour Supervisor and Priva Administrator/Greenhouse Assistant to manage daily tasks. This will include involvement in administration and operation of Cervini’s Farm Management/Information System (Priva). The Jr. Grower will therefore monitor the health of all plants in their assigned greenhouse and conduct daily inspection to ensure we control disease and maintain healthy levels of beneficial pests to promote healthy plant growth to provide volume production. This will include the suggestion of pesticides and practicing good crop sanitation methods and the use of biological controls.
Main Duties
- Coordinate and participate in the planning and care of Greenhouse production
- Monitor and coach the performance of a team of greenhouse production level employees where required and motivate staff
- Monitor quality of task execution (rolling, suckering, pruning etc.) and record results in Priva system for quality assessment
- Monitor Priva/Enterprise systems, establish methods to meet work schedules and co-ordinate work activities with other units
- Maintain a safe and legally compliant workplace and assist with Food Safety and Health & Safety compliance reporting
- Identify, investigate, correct and document potential environmental and safety problems
- Resolve problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality
- Ensure compliance with standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety, and complete and on-time delivery
- Provide leadership to expedite problem resolution and improvements and improve working relationships
- Provide on-the-job training for greenhouse workers as necessary
- Assist Labour Management in the initial or remedial instruction of greenhouse workers in cultivation requirements
- Maintain greenhouse maintenance records and prepare reports and analyses as requested by management
Requirements
- 0 – 1 years’ experience with a Bachelor’s Degree OR 1 – 2 years’ experience with a College Diploma OR 3+ years relative experience in Agriculture
- Pesticide license would be an asset
- Experience in Greenhouse Environmental Controls Systems such as Argus, Hoogendorm, Priva, etc.

- Assist with the control of common greenhouse pests and diseases, especially utilizing our Integrated Pest Management program
- Participate in ongoing quality control of growing, picked, packed, & received products
- Utilize production data in Excel and sales predictions to schedule and fine-tune crop rotations for many diverse crops
- Train and assist employees in growing procedures and use of growing equipment
- Make suggestions regarding product design and work closely on research and development projects

- Manage operation to comply with all applicable safety laws and regulations as well as HACCP protocol, procedures, and standards
