JOB SUMMARY
The Fellow will design a tobacco and cannabis use (incl. e-cigarettes) research program focusing on the biological, psychological, social, and other factors predicting consumption or cessation, and/or relationships between tobacco/cannabis consumption with psychological and medical outcomes, cancer incidence, and mortality. Fellows will have access to survey data from the longitudinal Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS) cohorts. Blood biospecimens are available for analyses of genetic, metabolomic, and other biomarkers of cancer risk or protection. The CPS cohorts include assessments of stress, social isolation, social support, and quality of life, in addition to demographics, medical, behavioral, lifestyle and other constructs linked to cancer incidence, morbidity or mortality (e.g., cancer screening and health care utilization, medical conditions, medication use, anthropometric measurements, physical activity/sedentary time/built environment, dietary habits, hormonal/reproductive factors, sleep/light at night/shift work, etc.). Each post-doctoral fellow will train under behavioral and epidemiological scientists in the Society’s intramural research department to lead analyses, conduct, publish and present peer-reviewed original research.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyze data from Cancer Prevention Study cohorts and biospecimen repository to test specific questions or hypotheses related to tobacco and/or cannabis use and cessation of use.
- Publish original scientific research in peer-review journals and present at professional or internal ACS meetings.

Summary of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Fellow will utilize diverse methods and procedures to work with rats in two independent projects in the McLaughlin Lab. The first project investigates how endocannabinoid signaling in the lateral habenula impacts behavioral flexibility under conditions of chronic stress. The second project explores behavioral and biological predictors of cannabis-seeking behavior, as well as developmental effects of cannabis exposure using a novel translational model of cannabis vapor self-administration in rodents. Candidates with experience in in vivo and ex vivo electrophysiology, in vivo calcium imaging (fiber photometry), MatLab coding, and rodent behavior will be given priority.
The Department:
Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN) (https://ipn.vetmed.wsu.edu/neuroscience/) is an academic unit in the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. International neuroscience faculty within the department form highly collaborative research units that study substance abuse, ingestive behavior, stress, and sleep neurobiology. The Postdoctoral Fellow will have opportunity for collaboration and co-mentoring, and can compete for both intramural and external research grants. In addition to postdoctoral training, the department of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience offers baccalaureate and doctoral degree programs in Neuroscience.
