Where you'll work
Our Seattle, WA facility is licensed by the WA State Liquor & Cannabis Board and the WA Department of Agriculture for cannabinoid processing, food manufacturing, and Research & Development. This position works primarily within our R&D department, and inside our ISO cleanroom, as required.
What you'll do
This Research, Development and Application Senior Scientist will work to bring novel, liquid compatible, cannabinoid based formulations to market. This includes concept ideation, research, development and commercialization of new formulations and products.
- Lead formulation and development from end-to-end on internal and customer projects within North America.
- Use sound commercial and technical awareness of ingredients, processes, materials, and customer requirements to deliver on project objectives.
- Develop innovative solutions to help grow Flowe's market within cost parameters and manufacturing capabilities while ensuring all new products meet legal standards within country of use.
- Manage Pilot Plant validation work and facilitate first production trials of new products internally and with customers.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a growing RD&A team.
- Build strong relationships with customer contacts via clear communication, on-site and virtual visits, presentations and supporting trials when required.
- Support sales and business representatives during customer calls through technical presentations and product demonstrations.

What you'll need to be successful
- BS/MS in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in key formulation research & development roles for both food and beverage products.
- Significant powder processing/manufacturing experience – dry blending, spray drying, plating, agglomeration/granulation.
- Experience in RTD product research and development, with successful commercialization.
- Strong knowledge of emulsion chemistry including particle sizing and stabilization techniques.
- Knowledge of food chemistry, sensory, microbiology, food packaging systems and food engineering.
- Prior experience working under FDA and/or cGMP considerations.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills.

Job Description
The Formulation Scientist would help with the formulation development and manufacturing implementation of new products. New products will cover a broad range of dosage forms (e.g., chewable tablets, swallowable tablets, soft gels, water soluble powders, etc.). The Formulation Scientist conducts and leads R&D and optimization activities for new products and is responsible for conducting testing to validate the products have desired physicochemical properties. The Formulation Scientist identifies and validates scalable manufacturing equipment and protocols and aids in transition from R&D to production. This is very much a startup role and the ideal candidate would be independent, creative, and have a strong desire to be part of a rapidly growing mission driven company.
Essential Functions
Under supervision, works as part of a product development team, conducts formulation, testing, and assists in the development of new products for a wide variety of dosage forms. The expected duties are as following:
- Designs and formulates different oral (but not limited to) dosage forms such as chewable tablets, swallow able tablets, soft gels, water soluble powders, etc.
- Plans and conducts scientific experiments to create product prototypes.
- Assures formulations meet design requirements and scalable for manufacturing.
- Provides technical assistance in any formulation and processing difficulties.
- Develops methods, batch records, and procedures for monitoring projects, such as preparation of records of research findings, progress reports with conclusions and recommendations, in order to inform management of current status of each project.
- Communicates closely with supervisor to develop new formulations, resolves formulation problems, and improves products performance such as color, texture, and other physicochemical properties.

Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (B.S.) or master’s degree (M.S.) in a scientific or technical field with at least 2-5 years of related experience in a pharmaceutical and/or a nutraceutical company. Having pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industry experience will be preferred.
- Basic knowledge of pharmaceutical/nutraceutical dosage forms and drug/nutraceutical product development.

Under the responsibility of Innovation Manager, the formulation scientist will develop various dosage forms in the different regulatory environment (prescription pharmaceutical, OTC, food supplements, dermo-cosmetics, medical devices)

Job Description
The Formulation Scientist I is familiar with extraction and separation principles. Has the basic understanding of thermodynamic principles and wet chemistry techniques related to cannabis extracts. Helps establish and execute department Operations Plans based on the company goals. Has the ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one to another. The Formulation Scientist I is responsible for the daily preparation of broad spectrum raw extracts from cannabis biomass, the processing and purification of raw extracts through winterization, decarboxylation, distillation, and other purification techniques. Hands-on working style.
This position will be utilizing PLC driven systems to achieve high purity concentrates using different separation techniques; maintain a clean and organized work environment, and log all activities involving the extraction and refining processes. The Formulation Scientist I will safely and effectively produce high quality cannabis extracts and concentrates for use in medical cannabis oils, liquids, and solid dosages for ingestion, inhalation, and topical applications.
Duties and responsibilities or (Essential Functions)
Perform his/her duties in a safe manner and environment while adhering to all governmental regulations for this industry.
Operate and run the laboratory cannabis extraction equipment
Carry out all procedures in an efficient manner that also complies with FDA, OSHA regulations, PharmaCann SOP’s and all applicable procedures.
Cross-train on and work alongside the remainder of PharmaCann’s team within extract processing and packaging of medical cannabis product line.
Ensure compliance and accuracy involving all product tracking, product security, and product movement procedures.
Follow appropriate control measures to prevent mixing of dissimilar production components while following Good Manufacturing Practices.

Perform in-process and post-process quality assurance testing and conduct visual inspections to ensure all product meets or exceeds PharmaCann’s specifications. Such quality assurance work shall include but not be limited to:
Recording and monitoring process conditions to ensure compliance to standard operating procedures
Proper weighting, data recording, and batch tracking throughout PharmaCann’s process
Continually strive to improve PharmaCann’s processes for improved patient safety, quality, and efficient manufacturing
Monitor and manage processing equipment supplies and inventory.
Perform daily Balance checks and calibrations, and confidently calculate Tare-Weight Gross-Weight
Support maintenance department in developing spare parts inventory and preventative maintenance schedules
Troubleshoot equipment issues with support from the maintenance department
Ability to analyze HPLC and GC data and chromatograms
Understand the principles of evaporation, condensation, separation, and crystallization
Possess working knowledge of vacuum systems
Confident in the operation of production scale distillation equipment
Familiar with the operation of PLC systems
Ability to utilize digital inventory control systems (i.e. ERP)
Assist as required in the compounding, extraction and manufacturing/filling operations

Qualifications
Education/Experience: BS in Chemical Engineering
