The Financial Crimes Specialist II assists with daily monitoring required for compliance with the Bank’s BSA/AML and anti-fraud programs. The primary areas include suspicious activity monitoring, fraud detection and high-risk account monitoring for the Bank’s cannabis related businesses. The Bank’s Financial Crimes program is a first line of defense that conducts prevention, monitoring and investigation activities to mitigate exposure to fraud, money laundering, electronic crime, and terrorist financing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Review new customer risk assessments and identify red flags for fraudulent or suspicious activity.
- Help the Bank comply with all applicable state and federal regulations with respect to BSA, AML and OFAC.
- Stay up to date with state cannabis requirements and licensing conditions.
- Work with other operating areas to enhance the Bank’s AML and anti-fraud processes and procedures related to serving cannabis customers.
- Manage alerts in the Bank’s fraud and AML system to ensure timely review and disposition.
- Assist with AML case management to ensure timely and prompt investigation.
- Perform high risk customer reviews.
- Keep abreast of changes in related regulations and regulatory agency guidelines.
- Participate in ongoing education by attending various webinars and seminars.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior experience with cannabis banking and monitoring of cannabis related business customers to comply with BSA requirements.
- In-depth knowledge of the anti-money laundering, countering financing of terrorism regulations and fraud prevention and detection techniques; strong analytical and decision-making skills; organizational skills; AML and anti-fraud software; Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in AML/CFT or anti-fraud areas
- Bachelor’s Degree; CAMS certification is highly desired
- Self-Motivated
- Ability to work independently

About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Financial Crimes Specialist to implement and maintain an effective financial crimes program for the company that complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and regulatory expectations including Bank Secrecy Act, Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Terrorist Financing, and Global Sanctions.
The Enhanced Due Diligence Center (EDDC), within Financial Crimes Risk Management (FCRM), is looking for qualified candidates to join an exciting team focused on monitoring enhanced due diligence programs for Money Services Businesses, Third Party Payment Processors, High Risk Customers, Cannabis Related Businesses, and Casinos. This position will conduct customized enhanced due diligence reviews for Consumer & Small Business Banking customers.
The EDDC group was formed to help meet the evolving due diligence needs of its Line of Business partners. This group is responsible for ensuring that Wells Fargo handles risk with high-risk industries at the enterprise level, and that Wells Fargo is in compliance with all applicable BSA laws and regulations.
In this role, you will:
- Participate in complex initiatives and identify opportunity for process improvements within scope of responsibilities
- Perform risk assessment and modeling to provide input and recommendations for financial crimes strategies and models
- Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of policies, procedures, processes and internal controls
- Conduct data and onsite reviews, review findings, determine risk level and recommend fraud prevention strategies
- Review and assess business, operational, or technical assignments or challenges that require research, evaluation, and selection of alternatives, and exercise independent judgment to guide medium risk deliverables
- Perform investigative research, root cause evaluation and consulting regarding complex financial crimes transactions, policy violations and suspicious situations with moderate to high risk
- Perform detailed examination to detect transactional and relationship patterns, trends, anomalies and schemes across multiple businesses or products
- Act as an escalation point for more complex cases
- Present recommendations for resolving more complex situations and exercise independent judgment while developing full knowledge proficiency in the function, policies, procedures and compliance requirements
- Take action on control failures in bank processes and procedures
- Represent organization in handling court appearances, depositions, mediations, and arbitrations
- Collaborate and consult with associates on all levels
- Lead, participate in and provide support for projects and initiatives
- Provide input to development and delivery of a wide range of individual education for financial crimes awareness
