Position Summary
The Urban Agriculture Seasonal Grower plays a key role in the dynamic urban agriculture programs based on the Comer Education Campus on the South Side of Chicago. Reporting to the Urban Agriculture Production Manager, the Grower supports a full range of planning, growing, distribution, training and educational activities on the Comer Education Campus (CEC). The Grower will have a role in supervising day-to-day activities of a team of teens and young adults in the GCYC network of gardens, including an 8,600 square foot intensive rooftop garden, an environmental education garden, an indoor hydroponics operation, and a 1.75 acre urban farm with hoop houses, annual vegetables, perennials, fruit trees, and more. This highly collaborative position directly supports all educational and programming efforts of the urban agriculture department.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Follow the GCYC crop plan to plant and maintain vegetables, perennials, trees, fruits, flowers, and herbs.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Plant and maintain vegetables, perennials, fruits, flowers, and herbs as assigned in the crop plan.

Main Goal
HM.CLAUSE is seeking an experienced individual to join our team at our agricultural research site in Davis, CA. The Research Station Greenhouse Grower is responsible for assisting the Greenhouse manager with all aspects of plant culture related to greenhouse and transplant production.Job descriptionThe Greenhouse Grower is also expected to oversee routine greenhouse repair and maintenance. Also, participate in the design and construction of any new greenhouse structures.ProfileEssential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Crop Management
- Execute greenhouse crop programs to the expectations of the breeding and research staff
- Execute crop specific fertilizer and irrigation protocols that maximize the potential of the breeding programs
- Work alone and with others to insure that crop protocols and crop management procedures are followed
- Apply labeled pesticides to control insect and disease pests
- Measure and monitor key performance metrics related to both the quality and productivity of crop programs
- Oversee and perform routine greenhouse maintenance and repair
Planning and Strategy
- Conduct periodic crop reviews with members of the operations, research and breeding teams to assess success of programs
- Forecast weekly labor needs for the greenhouses and work with greenhouse manager to achieve desired outcomes in an efficient and productive manner
- Assist greenhouse manager in the development of annual operating budgets and capital investment plans
- Conduct periodic crop walks with the greenhouse Manager to review crop progress and develop plans to address any variances or opportunities
- Prepare monthly written progress reports for the greenhouse Manager
- Assist in the design, specification, bidding and construction of future greenhouse facilities
Station and Organizational Development and Improvement
- Actively support the station Illness and Injury Prevention Plan – assist in periodic safety training
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement
- Participate in weekly staff meetings to share progress and discuss opportunities for improvement
- Work with others to provide training and development opportunities for all staff members
- Participate in periodic seminars and educational opportunities to ensure that protocols and greenhouse growing practices are up to date
- Work with the Greenhouse Manager to develop and implement station and regional improvement initiatives
- Cross train within farm operations and assist as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Greenhouse Manager
Responsibilities
- Provide general oversight over the tasks performed by seasonal employees and partner with the FLC supervisor to ensure the contract labor duties are executed
- Bachelor's degree in Biological field related to agriculture required
