Perennial Assistant Grower Summary:
To assist the Perennial Growing Manager in Trials and Experiments and support the Horticulture Department by evaluating new plant products, and develop better practices.
Perennial Growing Assistant Responsibilities:
- Irrigates plants outdoors and indoors. Techniques include watering by hand and operating drip lines, sprinklers and automated irrigation systems.
- Read and interpret Chemical Labels, calculate and mix concentrations for chemical applications, wear personal protective equipment, (gloves, goggles, spray suit, respirator, boots) Record accurate crop and spray records. Follow all OSHA, EPA and safety rules.
- Must visually observe colors and small details to scout for insects and diseases. Record insect populations and track crop height.
- Must bend, lift and move fertilizer bags up to 50 lbs to mix fertilizer and fertilize crops.
- Must wear and carry a backpack sprayer up to 50 lbs. Must pull weeds by hand.
- Clean irrigation equipment, greenhouse and storage areas
- Collect data, use computer and software to record and upload data, save files to appropriate locations on computer or portal.

This job opportunity as a grower of shrubs/trees and perennial flowering crops will keep you active and mostly in an outdoor environment. Growers are responsible for the health of the crops, this includes daily irrigation, as well as monitoring of crops for pest /disease and fertility issues. Assistant Grower Position Summary
Under the direction of a Grower, Grower Assistant's support in controlling greenhouse activities to ensure optimum growth, quality, appearance, and health of plants is maintained. Communication skills, organization, teamwork, attention to detail, attention to safety protocols, and exceptional time management skills, are critical to the success of this position within the organization.
Assistant Grower Major Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with all aspects of growing including watering, fertilizing, testing, and spraying (Includes: plant growth regulators, fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides)
- Plant maintenance such as sheering, weeding, cleaning, plant placement etc
- Greenhouse environment monitoring and adjustments using Priva® software
- Organized documentation of growing practices, plant progress/timing, and chemical application information
- Scouting, tracking, and controlling insect and disease related issues using integrated pest management (IPM) practices
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
- All other duties as assigned
Assistant Grower Skills/Qualifications
- Horticulture or floriculture experience preferred, but not required
- Horticulture or related college degree is a plus, but not required
- Ohio pesticide applicators license is a plus, but not required
- Spanish fluency is a plus, but not required
- Excellent verbal communications skills
- High energy, self-motivation, and willingness to learn
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Team-oriented
Working Conditions & Requirements
Corso's Horticulture operates year around with exposure to all seasons and weather conditions. Candidates must be willing to work in cold, hot, humid, rainy, and windy conditions. This position may function primarily outdoors during the months of March through November; employees are responsible for providing their own weather-appropriate attire. Additional requirements include:
- Reliable transportation to and from work
- Excellent attendance
- Ability to stand, climb, squat, bend, twist, and stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to occasionally lifting 35-50 pounds
- Willing to work flexible and long hours during peak season, with weekends required

Perennial Growers take part in all aspects of producing and selling perennials. Growers’ daily tasks include helping customers locate and choose the right plants for their gardens, ringing up sales, and loading customer vehicles with perennial purchases. Daily growing tasks include potting, watering, weeding, propagating, scouting for insect and disease issues, irrigation care, and keeping detailed records.
Teamwork is just as essential to this position as is the ability to complete tasks alone. Positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and willingness to work hard outside in a variety of weather conditions are crucial assets to working with our team.
Growers feel passionate about plants, our customers, learning, and caring for the environment, as well as the satisfaction that comes from a day of hard work outdoors.
Work Conditions
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment in Vermont's ever-changing weather
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds
- Each member of our staff works a five-day, 40-hour work week, which includes working one weekend day
