About the Role
We are looking to add a Director, Government Relations and Public Policy to support our growing team. This person will lead all aspects of dutchie's global government affairs and public policy strategy. Expected outcomes include strengthening dutchie's relationships with key regulators, advancing dutchie's public policy agenda, and keeping leadership informed on key legislative developments and updates. This person will be the first hire in dutchie's government relation department and will report directly to the General Counsel.
What You'll Do...
- Lead all aspects of dutchie's global government affairs strategy, including evaluating risks and opportunities, setting short and long-term priorities, and using diverse tactics such as direct lobbying, thought leadership, and external partnerships to shift the public debate and advance those goals
- Oversee comprehensive campaigns in dutchie's core markets, including the US and Canada, working with partners in and outside dutchie to frame issues to advance our agenda and advocate on behalf of our dispensary partners
- Educate and advise dutchie senior leadership on policy issues that could impact dutchie and the cannabis community in our core markets, keeping other relevant internal partners informed and involved as needed
- Develop a nuanced understanding of dutchie's current and future products and services, and assess key legislative, policy, and regulatory risks and opportunities
- Work with internal partners to articulate and share dutchie's position on priority policy issues
- Support identification of strategic targets and oversee dutchie's efforts to build strong and long-lasting relationships with policymakers
Support company engagement with government officials, trade associations, coalitions, and lobbying firms as needed
What You Bring...
- 8+ years of experience working in government and public affairs at a law firm, government agency or organization, or in-house at a technology company
- Deep knowledge of US legislative and policy processes, with experience operating in multiple jurisdictions
- Demonstrated experience working directly with government officials, including advocacy on behalf of public interest, trades associations, or any other interest groups
- Strong attention to detail, with excellent organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills
- Strong strategy expertise, with the ability to assess the landscape, set goals, prioritize tactics, and mobilize a team to effectively execute on them
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and multiple partners, executing strategies, delivering solutions, and leading cross-functional projects
- Ability to distill complex ideas into simple and easily understandable concepts, and communicate these ideas clearly, accurately, and persuasively in verbal and written form to internal and external stakeholders

Position Overview:
The Director, Public Policy (the “Director”) will be responsible for the creation of policy and related content. In addition, the Director will serve as a key resource for industry associations as well as broader stakeholder groups and coalitions. The Director must have a comprehensive understanding of the priorities and goals of the company and develop the policy framework and related materials needed to support our initiatives. The Director must also have experience in government relations and public affairs communications, the ability to work on technical healthcare subject matter, and the interpersonal communication skills required to interact effectively with a wide range of audiences (including internal leadership, government officials, regulators, and trade associations). Working well as a collaborative team member is imperative to success in the role, as is the ability to deliver results in a fast-paced environment where systems and processes are still being developed and maturing.
Major Areas of Responsibility include:
- Directing policy on various legislative and regulatory areas at the state and federal levels.
- Drafting, editing, and compiling materials for programing, policy, advocacy activities and meetings, stakeholder engagement plans, and speech writing, all of which must be aligned with the Company’s policy priorities.
- Working closely with the Company’s public affairs consultant(s) to support the creation of paid media and public relations campaigns that amplify our industry-leading expertise and reputation.
- Collaborating with internal operational subject matter experts to gain a deeper understanding of operational matters that correspond to policy concerns.
- Providing programmatic and project management support to Government Affairs activities.
- Briefing and advising team members and company executives on policy issues.
- Drafting and editing correspondence and policy memos.
- Conducting research and analysis of legislative and policy issues.
- Attending hearings, briefings, meetings, tours and conferences.
- Working closely with the Director of State Government Affairs, state-based contract lobbyists and public affairs consultants on both day-to-day tasks and long-term strategic initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications (Skills, Knowledge & Abilities):
- All applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in a communications or policy-related discipline preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in communications, public policy issues management, State Legislative, Capitol Hill or lobbying.
- Self-motivation and ability to work proactively and independently, troubleshoot, and work well under pressure.
- Experience building press and media strategies for policy campaigns.
- Enthusiasm for the public affairs challenges involved in working for one of the world’s largest and most successful companies.
- Excellent communication skills; strong writing and editing skills.
- Strong organizational and project-management skills.
- Public policy experience preferred.
- Mastery of Microsoft Office and strong PowerPoint skills are required; knowledge of Adobe products preferred.

- Authors or contributes to articles, book chapters, white papers on topics relevant to GW and Greenwich

Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or Bachelor’s degree in life science or related field of study preferred or equivalent combination of studies, qualifications and/or work experience
- At least three years’ experience with statutory and case law interpretation and constitutional analysis (preferred)
- At least three years’ experience drafting state and/or federal legislation (preferred)
- Knowledge of the laws and regulations governing cannabis and other controlled substances
- Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent attention to detail, good critical thinking skills, and the ability to evaluate processes and see areas for improvement, and recognize the need for occasional deviation from accepted practice
- Good interpersonal skills – including oral and written communication skills.
