We are currently seeking a Sr. Analytical Scientist to join our team! The Sr. Analytical Scientist will play an active role in the execution of ongoing projects and method development for various environmental and food & beverage analysis panels. Under minimal supervision, the scope of this position is responsible for research and validation; implementing strategies and tactics to accomplish overall laboratory objectives under revolving deadlines in coordination with all laboratory staff. The successful candidate will perform administrative, technical, and scientific duties for daily laboratory operations, thereby ensuring seamless research support. Additional duties will include management and analysis of daily client samples submitted to the laboratory, equipment maintenance, and daily supervision of analytical lab technicians. This position will work closely with the executive leadership team on current and future projects.
The scheduled shift time for this position is flexible but will generally be expected to work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday. During special project implementations, weekend or evening hours may be required. Must be currently residing in the San Diego, CA area. Salary commensurate with experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Effectively utilize and apply methods or technologies and provide ideas for new techniques, when applicable.
- Prepare reports and documentation providing the analysis or summarization of experimental results, outcomes and next steps to supervisor, technical teams/groups, or project teams.
- Participate in the development of research plans and experimental outlines to write experimental protocols and perform laboratory experiments.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of lab policies, procedures, and quality control practices for continuous improvements and increased efficiency.
- Develop chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods for analysis of small molecules.
- Successful in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought and ability to defend scientific ideas.
- Maintain and order necessary supplies for instrumentation lab and wet lab.
- Ability to train and mentor junior level research associates.
- Supporting and delegating the responsibilities of the laboratory staff; personnel training in analytical methods and new technologies.
- Acts as a liaison between the company, technical partners, and client representatives to clarify requests and enhance the results of the research/development projects underway.
- Act as subject matter expert in core team and/or cross-functional meetings.
- Manage the maintenance of lab equipment, including calibrating, cleaning, sanitizing and repair when necessary. Work with vendors to maintain and repair laboratory equipment
- Staying up to date with applicable State or Federal regulations regarding methodology or analysis that affect laboratory operations.
- Review and verify data/information on LIMS.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Expert level knowledge and experience running the following types of chemical analyses: Liquid Chromatography (LC), Mass Spectrometry (MS), Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), Gas Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS).
- Experience in developing and validating robust analytical methods.
- Experience working in and helping to maintain lab’s ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
- Prior experience working in a wet laboratory.
- Operate equipment and conduct tasks in a safe manner, adhering to established guidelines and applicable regulations.
- Ideal candidate will be a creative, analytical problem-solver who can cooperatively and effectively work with colleagues.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven setting, ability and willingness to multi-task, and the ability to prioritize and manage assignments.

Direct Supervisor: R&D Manager
Position Summary:
As a member of a cross-disciplinary R&D team, the candidate will develop and validate an analytical methodology to support an advanced fundamental understanding of material processing technology and the introduction of new cannabis products to markets. This position also involves designing and completing experiments and providing scientifically sound recommendations based on the data obtained.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to identify creative and innovative solutions of non-routine analytical tasks.
- Define and lead chemical analysis to support research and product/process development activities in novel cannabis product development in order to maintain market leadership.
- Developing new analytical methods using innovative solutions for raw materials, in-process, and finished products to support product development.
- Leading validation of analytical methodologies following ICH guidance
- Clearly interpret problems, make scientific judgments based on the outcome of the obtained data and take appropriate actions to resolve the issues.
- Writing/reviewing protocols, reports, SOP's, specifications & test procedures.
- Troubleshooting and maintaining analytical instrumentation through the proper performance and/or maintenance as required.
- Compiling necessary documentation to support regulatory submissions as required.
- Train junior scientists and research associates as necessary.
- Demonstration ability of problem-solving and offer necessary recommendations.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the R&D manager.
Qualifications:
1. M.S. or Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, or Pharmaceutical Sciences.
2. 2+ (for Ph.D) or 5+ (for M.S.) years of relevant research and development experience within tobacco, cosmetics, nutrition or pharmaceutical industry with a strong understanding of consumer insight and sensory evaluation.
3. Familiar with analytical chemistry instruments, such as (but not limited to) HPLC/PDA, GC/FID, GC/MS.
4. Experience with a wide variety of software and information systems (e.g. Shimadzu, ChemStation).
5. Strong hands-on experimental skills, attention to detail and good record-keeping
6. Proven track record in problem-solving and teamwork, thrive in a cross-culture team environment
7. Strong communication and presentation skills with various stakeholders.
