Position Summary (Primary Responsibilities)
Under the general direction of the Director of Supply Chain, the Grower Relations Manager is responsible for providing leadership and overall direction for the selection, development and management of a stable grower base and the delivery of raw materials in support of the Company’s business strategies and business objectives. This includes seed crops and production crops. The Grower Relations Manager will assume responsibility for Field Operations in the absence of the Director of Field Operations.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain and develop strategic alliances with growers to deliver crops that meet the quality and quantity expectations of the Company.
Work with department staff to provide responsive and proactive crop management / consulting services to growers.
Establish and maintain effective communication regarding emerging, current and potential issues related to crop production including but not limited to crop condition, grower practices, etc.
Participate with other members of the Field Department management group to develop plans and coordinate department resources to meet both short term (i.e. harvest schedules) and long term (i.e. future year acreage and raw material needs) objectives.
Select, manage and develop assigned staff and resources (re-focusing staff as needed) in a team-focused environment.
Manage department budgets consistent with Company policies and objectives.
Maintain knowledge of industry trends and best practices.
Act as department head in the absence of Director, Field Operations.
Other duties and function as assigned.
Education
Bachelors degree in agriculture, crop science or related field.
Experience
A minimum of 4 to 7 to seven years of experience in seed or row crop production and working with third-party growers is required. PCA license is required. Prior experience in a supervisory or managerial role is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of both row crop and seed crop production from field selection / preparation to harvest; agricultural contracting; costing of seed programs; and vegetable production and processing as related to crop requirements.
Analytical/Interpretative/Complexity
This position requires excellent analytical and interpretative skills. Ptoblem solving skills are requiered to evaluate and interpret information and data from ultiple and varying sources to establish criteria, refine methods and develop solutions.
Planning
Planning skills are required and must include the ability to effectively allocate resources to develop and maintain schedules for multiple projects (i.e. planting, harvest, milling and cracking schedules); develop crop projections; and most importantly develop and maintain an effective LRP (21%-35%)
Independent Choice
This position requires a great deal of independent choice. Substantial use of individual creativity and independent thinking to develop plans and methods will be expected regarding such activities as grower and land selection, production practices, etc. (50%-75%)
Extent of Supervision
This position reports to and is under the general supervision of the Director of Field Operations. Results of work will typically be reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, effectiveness or expected results.
Organizational Structure: Number and Title of Direct and Indirect Reports
This position will have direct supervisory responsibility for 4-6 exempt Field Representatives. Throughout the year on a project or periodic basis 5-40 other non-exempt field / harvest personnel will be indirectly supervised.
Impact of Decisions
Decisions made by the Grower Relations Manager will have an impact on the short term and long term operational and financial results of the Company. Poor decisions and / or failures could result in considerable loss to the Company and disrupt operations.
Contacts
This position is expected to have a high degree of contact with various people and entities both internally and outside the company at a variety of levels. Contact and communication is required to clarify information, coordinate activities / projects, resolve problems, and negotiate. A firm understanding of both internal and external customers is required. Internal customers include other field department staff, plant operations, R&D, quality control, accounting, and HR. External customers include growers, haulers & trucking companies, State & County agencies, consultants, outside contractors and university personnel.
Working Conditions
This position will work in a variety of environments throughout the year including the office; the Field / Research compound; and grower locations throughout California and other bordering states. Time spent in each environment will vary greatly depending on the time of year and current activities. Significant travel throughout growing regions is required. Overnight travel is expected to be 30-60 nights per year.

Essential Functions

- Manages phone/on site communications with clients and vendors.
- Trains field sugar samplers on processes related to field sampling
- Maintains field sugar sample labels, data, reporting and routes maps
- Assists field sugar samplers on general questions, route assistance and mileage reporting
- Maintains schedule versus actual reporting, including capturing daily notes related to shortages or overages on block delivery; tracks receipt of field pickup agreements; creates other reports on an adhoc
- basis
- Runs daily system crush reports for managers and reps
- Resolves grower inquiries related to gateway, delivery information and tickets.
- Engages in data entry and maintenance of grape management systems, including field rep schedule updates, delivery ticket printing and daily delivery load tracking.
- Maintains department files, delivery tickets, records, and documentation.
- Responsible for planning, ordering, setup and cleanup of biweekly Field Trip luncheons
- Responsible for the understanding of system components related to the grower relations function.
- Maintains satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.
- Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 2 years of planning, scheduling or operations experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibilities.
- Skilled in the use of MS Word and MS Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience supporting the grower relations function for an agricultural organization reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
- Notary Public Certification.
- Skilled in reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Experience with writing routine reports and correspondence.
- Skilled in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access at an advanced level; MS PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
- Skilled in speaking effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Skilled in calculating figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Skilled in applying concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Experience with solving practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Experience with interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Completes assignments that are broad in nature, usually requiring originality and ingenuity. Has appreciable latitude for un-reviewed action or decision.
