Job Description
Summary/objective
The Staff Accountant will work with the Controller and Finance Team to prepare and maintain financial records to track the organizations assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. This role will include cost accounting responsibilities for agriculture and industrial processing operations. As part of a growing operation, this employee will have opportunities to expand scope and assist in other accounting functions such as added responsibilities regarding Essential Functions, overseeing consolidated reporting, ownership of accounting mappings and allocations, and reconciliations. This position will utilize software such as Sage Intacct (ERP), Metrc (seed-to-sale tracking), Inventory/POS systems (to be determined), Microsoft Office, Adobe, document sharing programs, and other related business software.

· Assist with accounting oversight, monthly review of the general ledger
· Address accounting-related matters and questions for the Finance Team
· Help ensure accounting is in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and follows IRC Section 280E when applicable
· Close the books monthly, prepare and send monthly internal reports
· Prepare and review financial statements for accuracy and legal compliance
· Work with CPA firm for tax and workpaper preparation
· Oversee payroll, 1099, PPT, and other routine returns and filings
· Assist Controller with IRS and MRA audits
· Maintain product cost models, duplicate existing models for new products
· Collect, organize, and analyze cost information by cost center
· Construct systems to accumulate and monitor data
· Track actual to standard usage and loss variances; prepare related reports
· Use cost calculations to determine unit gross profit and contribution margin
· Establish and update bill of materials for all product categories
· Create and save documentation for all cost-related calculations, support for standard costing calculations that can be traced back to source documents
· Identify opportunities for cost savings through data analysis
- Help create and update KPIs for production departments
- Prepare cost forecasts for monthly, quarterly, or annual operating schedules
- Complete other accounting-related assignments from the Controller

- In-depth knowledge and experience in accounting, experience in cost accounting for manufacturing and/or agricultural operations is especially beneficial
- Demonstrated understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the Internal Revenue Code
- Working knowledge of software and online programs related to finance
- Ability to be flexible regarding work assignments
- Ability to prioritize work, create organization, solve problems, fill holes, self-manage time, and bring additional value to routine functions

Work environment/Physical demands
· The job is performed indoors in a moderately quiet environment
- Activities include extended periods of sitting at a desk
- Heavy use of wrists, hands, and fingers for keyboard work
- Some stooping and/or bending related to physical filing and supply management
- Moderate lifting may be required – usually no more than 20 pounds maximum
- Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information, work on a computer, and prepare or inspect documents
Travel required
· Continuing education through seminars and conferences within Michigan
· Other traveling as needed
Required education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting
Preferred education and experience
- General Staff Accounting – 3 years
- Cost Accounting – 3 years
- Experience working in an accounting oversight role is preferred
- Any experience working in the legal cannabis industry

· At least 21 years of age (state requirement)
· Reliable transportation
· Willingness to work flexible hours and overtime as needed
