This key Grower position supports the breeding, product development and culture research staff by producing and maintaining quality plant material for research trials and marketing events, while keeping the facility clean and operating efficiently. This position is responsible for the plant health and quality of crops in assigned zones and will focus on the watering, fertilizing, media testing, and growth regulation, as well as the monitoring and treatment of pests and diseases in those assigned crops. The position includes strong participation in the facility’s Integrated Pest Management program and includes crop scouting, releases of biocontrol agents, and general pesticide applications.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist in all aspects of growing plants for breeding, research trials, and marketing events, including watering, fertilizing, spraying, PGR applications, plant movement.
- Identify pests and or disease problems and recommend appropriate corrective measures to the Head Grower.
- Participate in the integrated pest management program through scouting, identifying and reporting pests; participate in weekly pesticide applications schedule, as well as in weekly biocontrol releases. Make recommendations and take corrective measures under the direction of the IPM Manager.
- Assist with soil and water testing by collecting samples and recording pH/EC data for crops and irrigation water in assigned zones.
- Participate in the weekend and holiday watering schedule.
- Assist with assembling, filling and setting out containers used in seeding and transplanting.
- Assist with composting, cleaning floors, and other activities to keep the facility clean and safe.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED and 4 years of experience in greenhouse production are required.
- Associate’s Degree or higher in Horticulture preferred.
- Experience with Integrated Pest Management and pesticide applications.
- Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License is required to be obtained within 3 months of hire.
- PC experience to include MS Office (Outlook, Excel) and experience in record keeping.
- Highly organized and self-motivated.
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
- Ability to frequently pull a 75-100ft. watering hose.
- Ability to tolerate hot, humid greenhouse conditions for long periods.
- Ability to spray chemicals while wearing protective equipment.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

The greenhouse facilities for Ball Horticultural Company are home to a wide range of plant trials and grow outs. The Ball Seed Assistant Grower is a crucial role in supporting the Ball Seed Grower and their programs. Those programs are a mix of finished grow outs for a garden display, as well as scientific greenhouse grow outs for breeding and plant selection. This position is ideal for candidates looking for heavy greenhouse experience, while also participating in some outdoor commercial production.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist in the sowing, transplanting and sticking of a wide variety of annual and perennial material.
- Effectively grow and maintain greenhouse program(s) as set by standards from either a Stakeholder or someone in Assistant Grower III or above position
- Accurately record data requested and be able to capture and present in an organized way
- Assist with making plant labels
- Makes chemical/IPM/Biological applications with supervision
- Making fertilizer for their program
- Identify basic insects and diseases and report them to appropriate person
- Assist in growing of plant trails indie a greenhouse environment as well as outdoor growing conditions.
Requirements
- Minimum of two years’ work experience in a greenhouse environment or working with plants is required.
- Knowledge of general plant genera is required
- Education in horticulture is preferred
- Familiarity with Microsoft programs, e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Access
- Familiar with greenhouse operations from a growing perspective
- Required to obtain pesticide license and keep up to date on certification within one year of hire date
- Ability to sit/stand for extended periods of time
- Environment ranges from cool to hot, depending on the time of year and whether tasks are being performed inside a greenhouse or out in the field

This position will be responsible for crop culture, participate in executing an Integrated Pest Management program, be help to technicians, and staff.
Employee Relations
Engage with facility leadership and employees on all growing related topics by addressing and resolving issues promptly. Be an advocate and a resource for other growers and technicians.
Crop Culture
The Grower is responsible for all aspects of growing, including watering, fertilizing, spraying, PGR Application, preparing greenhouse and outdoor areas for crops, plant movement, plant grooming, etc. They will work in conjunction with Greenhouse Manager to implement growing protocols and schedules for the assigned areas including but not limited to: Managing optimum crop quality within the given areas. Collection and evaluation of EC/pH data for crops and adjusting fertilization program accordingly. Reviewing greenhouse settings such as temperatures, air humidity, and light levels and report needs to Greenhouse Manager.
Integrated Pest Management
Identify, track and report diseases, insect and crop problems and help determine a solution. Control pests and diseases pressures by scouting, weeding, and sanitization.
Head House
Plan and carry out the work in the head house in a timely manner to ensure that pots are filled in time for transplants and sowing. The grower is responsible for the organization of materials and keeping an accurate inventory of plastics and supplies.
Other responsibilities:
Preform cultural trials and experiments to evaluate possible improvements to the crop.
Be an example to a dedicated, knowledgeable growing team.
Present great communication skills and provide proactive supports.
Assist the Greenhouse Manager with crop production software (Picas).
Ensure phytosanitary procedures are implemented and followed.
Participate in event set up and take down as directed by the Greenhouse Manager.
Requirements
Possess or be willing to become a licensed California Pesticide License applicator (QAC, QAL).
Experience with maintaining an Integrated Pest Management program.
Read, write, and speak Spanish fluently highly desired.
Proficient in basic computer programs. Excel Word, Outlook, SharePoint, Power Point, etc. is a must.
A proven ability to work independently and preform work in accordance with Team, Facility, and Company goals.
Physical requirements associated with this position include all of the following:
- 100% of the time will be spent in plant growing within assigned areas facility wide.
- Weekend and holiday shifts are mandatory.
- Ability to operate farm equipment .
- May require an adjusted work schedule (evenings and/or weekend hours) to meet deadlines or to access the company equipment.
- Spraying Chemicals while wearing protective equipment.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Agricultural/Farming Operation.
- Must be able to function within a normal business environment with regards to noise, odors, and temperature conditions.
- Non-smoking office and greenhouse/nursery environment.
- Good driving record/valid driver’s license when job duties require driving or the use of a company vehicle.

This is accomplished by supporting the Grower and product development staff in producing quality plant material for breeding, research trials and marketing events, while at the same time be involved in keeping the facility operating efficiently. This position will be working directly with the Growers and Senior Growers assisting them in watering, fertilizer and growth management of all crops in their assigned zones (if applicable) and will assist in identifying pests and diseases. Other key responsibilities that may be required are: Potted field trials, site preparation, data collection, irrigation, greenhouse equipment operation.
Essential Functions
- Perennial Program; assist grower with all aspects of the perennial stock program, from propagation to finish.
- Stock; perform stock maintenance, stock renewals, trial harvests and testing for breeder stock and certification stock following the clean stock sanitation guidelines.
- General plant maintenance; daily watering and fertilizing of plants. Participate in the weekend watering rotation.
- Marketing Events; assist in all marketing events from propagation to shipping the finished product. Duties include: propagation, packing and shipping, making and pulling labels, pulling product for customer sample programs.
- IPM (Integrated Pest Management); Bi-weekly scouting for insects. Maintain accurate records of pesticides, fungicides and PGRS applied. Maintain current pesticide license.
- General greenhouse maintenance; cleaning of greenhouses, equipment and benches as necessary. General organization and cleaning of head house as needed throughout the year.
- Participate in weekly meetings and perform other duties and tasks as needed.
Requirements:
- Required to act in accordance with Grower and/or Greenhouse Supervisor/Manager.
- The ability to learn culture requirements of assigned crops/ zones
- Acquire knowledge of spray applications of both pesticides and PGR’s with direction from Senior Grower or Greenhouse Manager/Supervisor.
- Proven ability to work independently and perform work in accordance with team, departmental and Company goals.
- Current Pesticide Operator’s License is required, or will be required to obtain within 3 months of employment (Illinois requirement).
- Extensive note taking and scheduling history for all product grown or in responsibility sphere.
Required Skills & Experience
- Associate’s Degree in Horticulture and 3 years preferred or experience or equivalent on-the-job experience.
- General knowledge/ understanding of greenhouse production.
- PC experience to include MS Word and Excel.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Ability to frequently pull a hose filled with water.
- Ability to lift/move 50 lbs. regularly.
- Ability to tolerate hot, humid and/or damp greenhouse environment conditions for long periods.
