Job Responsibilities
- Assist in the sowing, transplanting and sticking of a wide variety of annual and perennial material.
- Effectively grow and maintain greenhouse program(s) as set by standards from either a Stakeholder or someone in Assistant Grower III or above position
- Accurately record data requested and be able to capture and present in an organized way
- Assist with making plant labels
- Makes chemical/IPM/Biological applications with supervision
- Making fertilizer for their program
- Identify basic insects and diseases and report them to appropriate person
- Assist in growing of plant trails indie a greenhouse environment as well as outdoor growing conditions.
Requirements
- Minimum of two years’ work experience in a greenhouse environment or working with plants is required.
- Knowledge of general plant genera is required
- Education in horticulture is preferred
- Familiarity with Microsoft programs, e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Access
- Familiar with greenhouse operations from a growing perspective
- Required to obtain pesticide license and keep up to date on certification within one year of hire date
- Ability to sit/stand for extended periods of time
- Environment ranges from cool to hot, depending on the time of year and whether tasks are being performed inside a greenhouse or out in the field
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Physical ability to bend/stand/sit for various tasks required

Key Responsibilities:
The West Chicago R&D Greenhouses is a division of the Ball Horticultural Company that partners with various inter-company stakeholders to fulfill their greenhouse growing and cultural research needs. Ball Ingenuity is a stakeholder who works closely with breeders to commercialize exclusive unique new products for the North American greenhouse market.
The Greenhouse/Cultural Support Positionfor Ball Ingenuity will play an integral role in the trialing and evaluation of new crops with a strong focus on cultural research to assist in determining crop production strategies at the stock, cutting production, propagation, and finishing stages. This crucial role will be part of a dynamic team to continually improve successful product launches and development.
Essential Functions for Research Grower/ Cultural Trials
· Interact with the West Chicago Greenhouse and the Ball Ingenuity teams and to create best cultural practices for all designated plant material.
· Responsible for all plant material in your greenhouse zone. Must be proficient at IPM and an understanding of Biological controls and practices.
· Communicate/ Interact with Ball Ingenuity breeders for initial variety culture
· Responsible for conducting all Ingenuity culture trials from propagation to finished plants including cultural growing specs and data collection
· Responsible for growing one of a kind plant material so the team can decide which crops move forward in the selection process
· Collect and Communicate all trial data/photos/culture into the Ingenuity Data Base as well as updating and delivering results to the Ball Ingenuity Product Managers and breeders.
· Organize and communicate findings through presentations to both internal and external customers/stakeholders
· Work on special projects, plant and maintain material for summer outdoor trials as well as Ball Ingenuity marketing garden areas.
· Work in a partnership/cross training with the R&D Greenhouse Trial Team to assist other stakeholder projects as necessary.
· Work closely and communicate with the Ball Horticultural Company technical advisor team (Regular Meetings).
· Prepare for weekly meetings with your stakeholder (Ball Ingenuity) as well as any/all greenhouse team meetings.
· Participate in educational seminars and webinars and intercompany learning sessions offered to the greenhouse team to continually improve growing knowledge.
· Travel as necessary to attend educational conferences at the supervisors’ request.
Requirements:
- Must be a detail oriented person with the ability to take extensive data that delivers on set goals.
- Must have excellent follow through skills with the ability to meet hard deadlines.
- The ability for free thinking and self-motivation with the desire to seek out new opportunities to contribute to Ball Ingenuity’s and the R&D Greenhouse success.
- AS. Or B.S. in Horticulture preferred.
- Minimum 3 years greenhouse growing experience.
- Proven ability to handle multiple responsibilities at one time and seeing them to completion as well as showing flexibility for a quickly changing dynamic.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to work with all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work with Word/Excel and be proficient in power point presentations as well as the ability to learn specialized software system.
- Holds or can obtain a pesticide applicators license.
- Travel as needed to customers and rooting stations.
- Participate in weekend grower rotations

Key Responsibilities:
To help color the world and bring excitement in the world of flowers to our customers. This is accomplished by helping grow and maintain plant material for our world class Garden, viewed by thousands of customers every year. This position will spend approximately half of their time in a greenhouse environment, and the other half outside maintaining the finished plant material. This position is for someone who is passionate about following the production of plant material from start to finish!
Principal Accountabilities:
- Assist Head Grower to help facilitate the growing of seed and vegetative plants from start to finish. End goal is to have high quality product to install in the Gardens at Ball.
- Lead flower crew during plant installation which includes guiding the flower crew in pulling plant material for daily installations.
- Maintain installed plants for entire season so that after installation, plant displays must remain in showcase quality for the season. Tasks to make this happen include dead heading, watering and fertilizing.
- Educate and train flower crew which will help raise the skill levels of the flower crew.
- Assist Garden Production Manager to organize plant material from beginning of its arrival to install.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years growing experience
- BS in Horticulture or related degree
- Working knowledge of plant species and plant care
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Spanish language skills are a plus

To help color the world and bring excitement in the world of flowers to our customers. This is accomplished by supporting the Grower and product development staff in producing quality plant material for breeding, research trials and marketing events, while at the same time be involved in keeping the facility operating efficiently. This position will be working directly with the Growers and Senior Growers assisting them in watering, fertilizer and growth management of all crops in their assigned zones (if applicable) and will assist in identifying pests and diseases. Other key responsibilities that may be required are: Potted field trials, site preparation, data collection, irrigation, greenhouse equipment operation.
Essential Functions
- Perennial Program; assist grower with all aspects of the perennial stock program, from propagation to finish.
- Stock; perform stock maintenance, stock renewals, trial harvests and testing for breeder stock and certification stock following the clean stock sanitation guidelines.
- General plant maintenance; daily watering and fertilizing of plants. Participate in the weekend watering rotation.
- Marketing Events; assist in all marketing events from propagation to shipping the finished product. Duties include: propagation, packing and shipping, making and pulling labels, pulling product for customer sample programs.
- IPM (Integrated Pest Management); Bi-weekly scouting for insects. Maintain accurate records of pesticides, fungicides and PGRS applied. Maintain current pesticide license.
- General greenhouse maintenance; cleaning of greenhouses, equipment and benches as necessary. General organization and cleaning of head house as needed throughout the year.
- Participate in weekly meetings and perform other duties and tasks as needed.
Requirements:
- Required to act in accordance with Grower and/or Greenhouse Supervisor/Manager.
- The ability to learn culture requirements of assigned crops/ zones
- Acquire knowledge of spray applications of both pesticides and PGR’s with direction from Senior Grower or Greenhouse Manager/Supervisor.
- Proven ability to work independently and perform work in accordance with team, departmental and Company goals.
- Current Pesticide Operator’s License is required, or will be required to obtain within 3 months of employment (Illinois requirement).
- Extensive note taking and scheduling history for all product grown or in responsibility sphere.
Required Skills & Experience
- Associate’s Degree in Horticulture and 3 years preferred or experience or equivalent on-the-job experience.
- General knowledge/ understanding of greenhouse production.
- PC experience to include MS Word and Excel.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Ability to frequently pull a hose filled with water.
- Ability to lift/move 50 lbs. regularly.
- Ability to tolerate hot, humid and/or damp greenhouse environment conditions for long periods.
