About the team: As part of ALM’s global newsroom, the Regulatory Desk is focused on emerging legal and compliance issues, state and federal regulatory trends, key lawyers and judges making news and the revolving door in Washington and beyond. Reporters on the desk keep close tabs on white-collar enforcement, financial services and banking, the cannabis industry, whistleblowers, U.S. Supreme Court cases and more. The Regulatory Desk collaborates closely with other teams of reporters on the Business of Law, Litigation, Culture and In-house desks. The senior editor on the desk is based in Washington, D.C.
Job description:
ALM is looking for a versatile news reporter for the Regulatory Desk in Washington to cover federal appeals courts from a national perspective. The position will offer a range of reporting opportunities focused on new rulings and litigation trends; key oral arguments and the latest filings; spotlights on judges, new and veteran appellate lawyers, and law firm practices; and judicial nominees.
The ideal candidate would approach the beat with a competitive zeal and will be expected to quickly write spot news while also writing frequent enterprise stories, with a particular focus on identifying emerging issues and trends and splits between the circuits. Our new appellate position will be expected to surface those cases and issues that could become flashpoints at the U.S. Supreme Court. The beat will include some coverage of the Supreme Court, especially for ALM's premiere newsletter Supreme Court Brief.

Good communication and time management skills are essential
You are adaptable and are open to coaching
Have a degree in journalism or communications
You have 2 to 3 years of daily journalism work. Some experience with legal or business journalism is preferred, but not essential

ALM is looking for a versatile news reporter for the Regulatory Desk in Washington to cover the U.S. Justice Department and other key agencies, in addition to white-collar practices at major U.S. law firms. The position offers a range of reporting opportunities focused on enforcement and compliance; government affairs, lobbying and congressional oversight; and the revolving door. The ideal candidate would approach the beat from a 360-degree perspective, pursuing coverage through the vantage of law firms and lawyers and the agencies themselves. Coverage will focus often on identifying key private and government lawyers; spotlighting enforcement trends; and showing how law firms are engaging with regulators. Our ideal white-collar reporter would also be expected to keep close tabs on major federal trial and appellate decisions. This is a high-profile assignment for a reporter who wants to write for a national audience and we are looking for an individual who is eager to break news, write analysis and have a voice on social media.
