M Consulting Experts is a cannabis consulting company based in Orange County, CA. We have a Client that is building out a large volatile manufacturing and distribution facility in Long Beach, CA. We are searching for a for a qualified Lab Director on behalf of our Client.
Position Summary
The Lab Director must possess extensive cannabis laboratory experience and will be in involved in the layout, design, and equipment selection for the facility, as well as establishing and implementing standard operating procedures, selecting and developing a lab team of qualified employees, and oversee all technical operations of the facility.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate Lab Technician schedules
- Oversee extraction, production, planning, processing, and scheduling
- Forecasting budgets for the Lab
- Work directly with the Executive Management team to define expected outcomes, identify issues and resolve through corrective action
- Interview, hire and manage new employees
- Develop and manage KPI’s
- Develop and implement SOP's for all required production processes
- Preparation of equipment and plant materials for extraction
- Maintain accurate extraction production logs
- Maintain strict quality control measures to ensure inventory records and high-quality product, materials and equipment
- Ensure the consistency and efficiency of product through quality control testing and procedures
- Keep a clean and safe work environment, including maintaining, cleaning, and making adjustments and repairs to extraction equipment per CAL-OSHA
- Carry out day to day tasks including, prepping, extracting, and packaging
- Monitor and maintain production of the facility in accordance with the safety and sanitation laws, procedures, rules, and regulations
- Operate, maintain, and make adjustments to extraction laboratory equipment such as liquid chromatography systems, pumps, scales, glassware, evaporators, distillation, chillers and other laboratory equipment following current good practices and standard operating procedures.
- Plan and manage production schedules that effectively leverage capacity, labor, and materials to meet volume, cost, and quality goals.
- Ensure that all regulatory compliance, including safety, environmental, and documentation requirements and all other data generated by the laboratory team meets quality control requirements.
- Maintain accountability and inventory of all supplies, raw materials, finished products. and equipment by completing forms, reports, logs, and records.
- Experience with utilization and/or implementation of METRC software, ERP systems, digital inventory systems, and data analysis tools a definite plus.
- Demonstrated confidence, including providing a consistent leadership style with an acceptable level of professional assertiveness.
Desired Qualification and Experience Requirements
- BS/BA Degree in Chemistry/Engineering or related field required.
- Masters Degree in Chemistry/Engineering or related field highly preferred.
- 5+ years of relevant experience as a Lab Director in a licensed cannabis manufacturing facility.
- 4+ years of operational experience with hydrocarbon extraction.
- 2+ years of operational experience with ethanol extraction, concentrate and oil post-processing, distillation and formulation.
- 3+ years of METRC software experience.
- Any experience in developing a cannabis manufacturing facility from concept to operations is highly preferred.
- Located in Southern California or the ability to re-locate to Southern California.
- Must be 21 years of age and able to pass a full background check and Live Scan.

The Lab Director is responsible and accountable for the production of concentrates and formulated products and all aspects of the tracking and quality control management. Ensures the safe, accurate and timely testing and production of concentrates and formulated products. Coordinates with production schedules and Cure/Vault regarding product inventory and availability. They will will be responsible for maintaining proper inventory in the company’s METRC tracking system. They will also help develop new products and brands as needed for changing consumer tastes.
Position Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain extraction operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing operational policies and procedures.
- Assist with equipment selection and hiring of lab crew.
- Extracting cannabis through various methods and post-extraction processing, to ensure quality oil and terpenes, using some or all of following materials / techniques: CO2, butane, propane, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, ice water extraction, and heat and pressure.
- Position may participate in product development and be responsible for supporting future product launches and methods of extraction.
- Regulatory compliance is an important responsibility of this role as well.
- Must be cautious and follow safety procedures when handling hazardous materials. Process concentrates and extracts.
- Regular cleaning and maintenance of lab equipment and facility.
- Inventory and record keeping of lab equipment. Maintain inventory records of supplies, materials, and temperatures of machinery.
- Assist with laboratory and equipment cleanup. Wash and sterilize lab surfaces and glassware.
- Disposal of waste to keep laboratory and all other working areas in pristine conditions.
- General routine maintenance on lab equipment. Troubleshooting, preventative maintenance and regular data logging.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years experience in cannabis manufacturing leadership role.
- Familiarity with quality control, policy and procedure and documentation.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Extended periods of standing.
- Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
