The mission of Viridis Laboratories is to ensure health and safety within the cannabis industry by testing cannabis products for potency and purity; and to report results of this testing to consumers, manufacturers and regulatory agencies. As a growing company, we are looking for a full-time laboratory scientist with microbiological experience to perform analytical testing of cannabis plant products (plants and consumables) at a new laboratory facility located in the Lansing, Michigan area. Michigan is a medical-marijuana state.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Sample testing (qualitative and quantitative).
2. Assisting scientific staff with ensuring that test results are accurate and reliable.
3. Reporting of results through the laboratory information management system to clients, government agencies and other involved or mandated parties.
4. Assistance in the maintenance of laboratory records and documentation.
5. Assisting clients, government agencies and other involved parties with requests related to laboratory testing or results.
6. Assistance in meeting quality expectations and accreditation requirements.
7. Compliance with all laboratory safety, security, and process protocols and directives.
8. Assistance with research.
9. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in a laboratory science.
2. One-year minimum experience in an analytical or academic laboratory setting.
3. Knowledge/Experience with microbiological contaminants in plants and foods such as quantitation of viable aerobic bacteria, total coliforms, bile-tolerant gram-negative bacteria, E. coli (pathogenic stains) and Salmonella spp., and yeasts and molds (including Aspergillus spp.).
4. Familiarity with microbiological testing techniques such as qPCR is highly desirable. Familiarity with other instrumental analytical techniques (such as GC/MS) are a plus but not required.
5. Familiarity with data entry and throughput.
6. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems.
Familiarity with accreditation and regulatory processes.
Salary is negotiable and will be commensurate with education & experience (range $21.75 - $33.50/hour). This position is eligible for a matching 401K program and health care benefits.

Qualifications
Must possess at a minimum a Bachelors or Masters degree in biology and at least a year of laboratory experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for maintaining updated understanding and knowledge of the methods employed in the laboratory.
- Provides accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures to fulfill the requests of the customer.
- Prepare samples for analysis using various methods in accordance with ISO standard operating procedures.
- Perform sample preparation and analysis of cannabis and cannabis products for the detection of Salmonella, E. coli (STEC), bile-tolerant Cram-negative bacteria, total coliform, total viable aerobic bacteria and total yeast and mold.
- Perform water activity analysis.
- Perform plating techniques for the detection of viable yeast and mold.
- Execute method validation in accordance with ISO 17025 requirements.
- Review raw and QA/QC data ensuring it meets established criteria and upload final results into the LIMS using GLP.
- Submit non-conforming work to the Corrective Action/Preventative Action workflow.
- Work with the Lab Director to prepare and review SOPs and other controlled documentation.
- Take inventory of supplies and create orders for supplies needed.
- Work with a team of scientists in a fast-paced environment to design and implement analytical strategies.
- Prepare technical reports.
- Be responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the microbiology lab and to ensure the achievement and maintenance of quality standards of practice.
- Ensure the accurate performance of all tests in the microbiology lab including the submission of appropriate reports on all tests.
- Establish and adhere to written policies and procedures for a comprehensive quality assurance program.
- Preparation of all samples, standards and reagents for analysis.
- Preparation of samples for Method Detection Limits (MDL), Initial Demonstration of Capacity (IDOC), proficiency test samples (PTS), and other forms of quality control samples.
Additional Duties May Include:
- Receipt of samples from clients, couriers and mail.
- Verification of Chain of Custodies, sample packaging, temperature, and contents upon receipt.
- Submission of samples in the LIMS system, including identification of parameters to be analyzed and descriptions.
- Cross-training on separate analytical methods (HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS)
- Training scientific staff
