Veda Scientific is a new, hemp and cannabis R&D and compliance testing laboratory located in Lompoc, CA. The company is composed of experts in the fields of cannabis testing, plant physiology and chemistry as well as business process, HR, marketing and finance.
BASIC FUNCTION
The Scientific Director is primarily responsible for overseeing the entire operation of the laboratory, which includes its staff, equipment, instruments, supplies and samples received. The Scientific Director is additionally responsible for administering the basic management functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling to assist the President in the successful and efficient attainment of company goals while working alongside the Chief Science Officer (CSO). The Scientific Director is expected to perform bench duties whenever required to ensure that daily service goals are achieved.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY
- Works with the CSO and Technical Lab Director to evaluate equipment, develop testing methods and write standard operating procedures, methods development and validation procedures to meet regulatory requirements (CA-BCC) and best industry practices (i.e. AOAC, ICH etc.)
- Provides laboratory operational information, products, and services by establishing sample preparation protocols; developing and implementing analytical procedures; interpreting laboratory results.
- Works with leadership team to continue to attract and retain best in class laboratory personnel.
- Supports Veda's values of Engagement, Expertise, Consistency, Accountability and Responsiveness.
- Works with CSO & VP of Operations to create a continuing education program to enhance the skills and professional development of lab team members.
- Maintains laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying (calibration) instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
- Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by improving and updating procedures to check stock to determine inventory level; anticipate needed supplies; place and expedite orders for supplies; oversee receipt of supplies and inventory
- Maintains laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; making operational or staffing adjustment.
- Maintains laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems; recommending improvements; establishing priorities; testing; writing and revising standard operating procedures; training employees; maintaining security and confidentiality.
- Working with the VP of Operations to ensure ISO 17025-2017 is on track and meets all quality directives
- Maintains laboratory staff by supervising the recruitment, selection, orientation, and training of employees.
- Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning tasks to employees and following up on work results.
- Monitors laboratory staff performance by evaluating and appraising
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Resolves problems by consulting with Chief Scientific Officer and/or President and laboratory staff.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree or Higher
- Minimum of ten years of laboratory experience
- Minimum of four years in leadership roles
- Significant experience with some or all of the following pieces of equipment: HPLC, LC MS/MS, GC MS/MS, ICPMS, GCxGC, qPCR
- Experience managing complex projects and/or operations
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED
- Experience with Agilent hardware and software
- Cannabis testing experience
- Additional education or certificates
