Are you interested in becoming a future leader in the community? The City of Richmond is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Cadet. The goals of the Police Cadet program are to expose men and women to the various aspects of police work in order to prepare them for a career in law enforcement. Police Cadets will promote the community's opportunity to enjoy a safe and positive environment.
Police Cadets are required to wear uniforms, do not carry firearms, and will
not have sworn Police Officer status. They will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions and will be required to work shifts, weekends and holidays. The Police Cadet classification is Unrepresented.
Successful candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude and must pass a polygraph exam, a background investigation and (depending on assignment) may be required to pass a Physical Agility Test.
Highly motivated candidates who are seriously considering a career in law enforcement will be assigned to perform a wide variety of support and administrative duties in a learning capacity, and will assist and observe police officers and other general employees. Incumbents may have the opportunity to learn and gain additional experience for a career in law enforcement. Police Cadets in this assignment must successfully complete a 160-hour Police Cadet training program and meet physical fitness standards.

Position Description and Duties
Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Operates police information equipment including computer systems and teletypes; enters and researches information at the direction of a Police Officer or other general employees; and assists in processing, packaging, labeling, storing and destroying property and evidence.
2. Photocopies, files, indexes and locates police records and related documents.
3. Rides with Police Officers to observe and learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques.
4. Performs errands for the department such as transporting information.
5. Provides traffic direction and control for special events.
6. Assists with receiving information and complaints from the public.
7. Relays information as needed to appropriate departmental personnel.
8. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to:
Learn the principles, practices, procedures, laws and ordinances, terminology and operation of equipment used in law enforcement and crime prevention.
Education
High school graduation or the equivalent,
and current enrollment in good standing at a college or university OR current high school enrollment with status as a Senior.

Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
Physical Requirements
Incumbents must have uncorrected 20/100 in each eye, corrected to 20/30 in each eye. They must have normal color vision, and normal hearing.

Ability to: Learn to correctly interpret and apply the laws, codes, policies, and procedures related to law enforcement automated information and records management systems; maintain accurate records and files; operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer terminal; work courteously with the public, other law enforcement agencies and departmental staff; understand and carry out written and oral directions, and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; work outdoors in all weather conditions; use equipment necessary to provide public safety; operate a two-way radio communication device; operate an automobile; and spend long hours on foot.

Assignment:
- Possess at least a 2.0 GPA;
- Show an active interest in a law enforcement career; and
- Successfully pass a Physical Agility Test that will measure the physical abilities necessary to do the required duties for the position.
Additional Requirements
- No felony convictions.
- No use of the following drugs within the past five (5) years: Cocaine, Hallucinogens, LSD, Heroin, Methamphetamine, MDMA (Ecstasy), Psilocybin (Mushrooms).
- No use of the following drug within the past two (2) years: Marijuana (Cannabis).
- Successful candidates must pass a thorough background investigation, which may include a criminal history check for job-related convictions, fingerprinting, a polygraph test, a credit check, and a check of drug use history.
- Must be able to qualify to use protective respirator equipment based on passing a specialized physical examination by the hire date and maintain certification.

Application and Selection Process
1. Applicants must apply online by fully completing the City of Richmond Employment Application, including answers to supplemental questions. All communication regarding this recruitment will be via email; each applicant must apply with a monitored email address.
2. Application Screening: All completed applications will be evaluated based on job-related qualifications criteria, which could include desirable qualifications and the specific needs of the hiring department. The applications for the candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be referred to the Police Department for further review. These applications will remain active for one (1) year.
3. The Police Department will review applications and select the better-qualified candidates for an oral board interview.
4. Candidates are interested required to pass a Physical Agility Test, in order to be considered for an interview. The Physical Agility Test will consist of the following three events:
- 25 sit-ups in 2 minutes
- 25 push-ups in 2 minutes
- 440 yard run in 2 minutes
5. Candidates who pass the oral board interview will be asked to complete and submit a Personal History Questionnaire.
6. The Personal History Questionnaire will be reviewed and evaluated based on hiring requirements.
7. The passing candidates will begin the background investigation process which may consist of a polygraph, fingerprinting and a meeting with a background investigator.
8. Candidates who pass the background investigation will be given a conditional offer of employment and will be scheduled for a medical evaluation and psychological evaluation.
9. Candidates who are selected for hire will receive an offer letter.
10. Candidates who are not selected for this position may re-apply one (1) year from the date that the previous application was submitted (if the position is still open).
