The Opportunity:
The AGO is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 3 in the Licensing and Administrative Law Division. This position is located in Seattle. This position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
**Note: There is the possibility of an in-training from the Legal Assistant 1 or 2 level.
Salary
The salary listed above is for the Legal Assistant 3 level. In addition to their base salary, Legal Assistant 3s in Seattle receive an additional 15% location based assignment pay and an additional 5% for King County premium pay.
Applicants qualifying at the Legal Assistant 2 level will start at salary range 40 ($37,728– $48,996 annually) and after successful completion of the in-training will move to the Legal Assistant 3 salary range. In addition to their base pay, Legal Assistant 2s in Seattle receive an additional 15% location based assignment pay and an additional 5% for King County premium pay.
Applicants qualifying at the Legal Assistant 1 level will start at salary range 36 ($34,368 - $44,412 annually) and after successful completion of the in-training will move to the Legal Assistant 2 range. The Licensing and Administrative Law Division (LAL) consists of 31 attorneys and professional staff based in Olympia and Seattle. In support of the mission and values of the Attorney General’s Office, LAL serves the citizens of Washington by providing legal advice and litigation services to various state agencies. This position will provide support to attorneys who represent the Employment Security Department, Department of Licensing, as well as multiple state boards and commissions, such as the Liquor and Cannabis Board, Lottery Commission, Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals, and Executive Ethics Board. Our work includes litigation before various tribunals, including the Office of Administrative Hearings, professional licensing boards, Washington superior and appellate courts, and federal courts. Cases range from entry-level to high profile and cutting-edge.

Duties
In a law office setting and in conjunction with other staff, this position independently performs a variety of complex legal support assignments, including but not limited to:
Identifying and pursuing next steps in litigation or adjudication process;- Professionally and responsively communicating with agency personnel, opposing counsel, pro se parties, and courts or clerks;
- Reviewing incoming documents to determine critical deadlines by applying applicable rules and calendaring events using a case management system;
- Tracking and updating deadlines to advise attorneys of items needing attention;
- Utilizing legal databases such as Westlaw, ODYSSEY, ACORDS, and PACER to access case information;
- Composing and preparing correspondence, pleadings, records, and discovery documents per attorney and paralegal direction;
- Editing legal briefs including preparing table of contents and authorities for appellate briefs and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy, consistency, and case relevance;
- Ensuring proper filing and serving of legal pleadings;
- Performing basic legal research;
- Organizing and preparing trial notebooks, pleadings, and exhibits for hearings;
- Scheduling arrangements for witness appearances at hearings;
- Other work as may be assigned.

Option 3: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field of study plus 2 years of legal office experience. A Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the Legal Secretary or Paralegal degree.
To qualify at the Legal Assistant 2 level:
Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalent;
Option 2: One year as a Legal Assistant 1;
Option 3: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field plus 1 year of legal office experience. A Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the Legal Secretary or Paralegal degree but not the experience.
To qualify at the Legal Assistant 1 level:
Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of one year experience in a legal environment;
Option 2: Two years of legal office experience;
Option 3: A combination of three years of college education and/or relevant experience;
