HEAD GROWER
Central Florida Ferns and Foliage is a Florida-based wholesale nursery specializing in tropical ferns and foliage. This role will be responsible for the day-to-day growing operations of the wholesale nursery across several locations.
We have an immediate opening for a head grower. If you are an experienced grower with a passion for plants, come join our team of dedicated like-minded people.
Job Overview:
The Head Grower is essential to the overall success of the nursery. They are responsible for directing and coordinating the growing of a wide variety of tropical plants. This position requires a boots-on-the-ground, day-to-day operations leader. This leader must have excellent communication skills with the greenhouse team and exceptional organizational skills for the management of the greenhouses. Some of the requirements of this position, include but are not limited, to implementation of crop cultural protocols including pest control, fertilizer, PGR, crop scheduling, and other phases of growing and production. The head grower is responsible for proper quality control across all locations. This position is a crucial role in leading and developing our growing team. You must work well with other departments and have excellent organization and great communication skills. This is a full-time position that averages 45 hours per week, which includes some weekend duty.
Responsibilities:
- Assures all safety rules and policies are in place and always followed
- Assists with proper inventory management
- Maintain irrigation schedules and system for proper seasonal schedules
- Apply and manage the applications of pesticides, chemicals, biologicals, as required for maintaining crop health
- Manage location growers to ensure maximum productivity
- Stay up to date on current trends and innovative ideas
Required Skills and Abilities
- Florida Private Pesticide Applicator License
- Must have at least 5 years of growing experience
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Self-starter, works well under pressure, ability to multi-task
- Computer literate, Microsoft office
- Managing programs including planning, implementation, and follow up
- Ability to work in inclement weather
- Excellent communication skills, bi-lingual English/Spanish a plus
- Analytical and inquisitive, not afraid to ask questions or offer new ideas
- Must have reliable transportation and valid driver’s license
- Willing to help in other areas of the nursery depending on the time of the year/season
- Able to repetitively bend, stretch, reach, lift, stand, and walk with unrestricted motion. Able to remain on feet for majority of the day. Can lift 50 pounds
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year

POSITION SUMMARY:
The role of this position is to effectively manage any of the 4 areas of growing (Compost and Fill, Spawn And Case, Production or Sanitation), produce a consistent product in an assigned area for the next phase of production, with regard to quality, quantity, predictability, forecasting, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise and direct daily assignments and personnel to maintain proper production schedules and planning.
- Aid personnel by providing technical assistance relating to the job.
- Perform “hands-on” technical duties, analysis, and decision-making related to the area of the facility where the Grower is assigned.
- Manage raw materials and other materials and supplies to ensure production at the lowest cost possible.
- Manage Crops, procedures, equipment, and operations.
- Maintain all pieces of equipment (Pre-wet machine, Turners, Loaders, and forklifts) as well as Fill and SAC Lines in optimum conditions.
- Assist in coordinating PM and repairs to Lines and air handler units.
- Provide leadership in safety awareness and training of all personnel.
- Provide input to Growing Manager concerning area needs and information relating to crops.
- Oversee the interviewing, hiring, and training of new employees, and promotion or transfer of current employees.
- Perform evaluations and corrective actions; coordinate with HR for serious performance issues and terminations.
Enforce and comply with all GMP/HACCP and Safety rules and regulations. Attend and/or conduct Safety meetings as required.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Effectively communicate with other departments to coordinate repairs, schedule changes, and other problem-solving situations.
- Perform accurate recordkeeping as required by the area in which the Grower is assigned, relating to crop parameters, inventory, and raw material usages and deliveries.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for supervising both hourly and non-exempt salaried employees.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
Required:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working on one or more of the 4 areas of growth.
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory/leadership experience
- Experience working with a minimum of 2 of 3 control systems (Fancom, ALC, Yokogawa).
- Required to work flexible days and hours, including nights and weekends
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; good general math skills
- Must remain current on changes in the growing process
- Regular worksite attendance is essential
Desired:
- Basic office and computer skills
- Mechanical aptitude in working with equipment, planning and problem-solving
- Basic Knowledge of operation of Air Handler Units.
