ABOUT THE ROLE
In this role you’ll be responsible for assisting Vangarden’s Controller with all day to day functions in the accounting department.
ABOUT YOU
You are a competent and compassionate professional with a solid understanding of cost accounting and GAAP. Your prior experience in manufacturing, corporate, or public accounting has given you the foundation necessary to excel in this role.
- Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, corporate or public accounting
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
- Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be detail-oriented with a positive and proactive attitude
- Strong cost accounting knowledge
- Willingness to learn
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Proficient with QBO or adept knowledge in other accounting applications
- Excellent problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills
- Experience within a highly regulated industry such as cannabis
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred
- Knowledge of IRS Code 280E preferred
- Some experience in forensic accounting preferred
- Responsibilities
- The Senior Accountant will report to the Controller and is responsible for supporting day to day accounting as well as month end close and reporting, inventory accounting, as well as serving as a key business partner between the finance and operations teams
- Revenue Recognition
- Manage intercompany transactions
- Cost accounting - Provide cost of goods analysis
- Assign account codes to items such as invoices, vouchers, expense reports, check requests, etc. with correct codes conforming to standard procedures to ensure proper entry into the financial system
- Receives, researches and resolves a variety of routine internal and external inquiries concerning account status, including communicating the resolution of discrepancies to appropriate persons.
- Prepare month end inventory and cost of goods sold valuation for both manufacturing and retail facilities
- Record bi-weekly payroll
- Assist in compiling information and preparing responses to auditors during the annual external audit
- Ensure transactions are allocated accurately and timely
- Responsible for analyzing any significant month over month fluctuations in the financial statements
- Work with operations to help implement departmental budgets
- Produce budget variance reports and analysis
- Assist with forecasting, cash planning and management
- Assist and collaborate with the administrative team on monitoring and reporting for expense reimbursement and debit card transactions.
- Collaborate with controller to process vendor payments
- Prepares check requests, wire transfers, and ACH transactions for processing
- Prepare memos, reports and financial analysis using Word and/or Excel as needed
- Work directly with the Controller on projects and serve as a backup for other accounting functions and their reporting needs
- Maintain files and documentation thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with company policy and generally accepted accounting principles
- Other duties as assigned and required
- Work and Environmental conditions:
- This position is primarily based in an office setting. The work pace for this position is a continual fast pace where work is required for up to 3 hours at a time. Minimal supervision from managers with intermittent prompts. Social interaction with clients, vendors, and coworkers is required frequently.
- This position requires such physical abilities as sitting for long hours at a time for computer and phone work, lifting up to 20 lbs sometimes and carrying items, standing, and walking throughout the buildings. Crouching, kneeling, twisting, handling, pulling, pushing, and stooping needed for filing and organizing. Some driving may be required for trips to the post office and banks.

In this role you’ll be responsible for producing highly accurate cash management & forecasting reports, and:
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, other regulatory or governmental requirements, and corporate policies and procedures by staying attuned to early warnings of financial problems.
- Be able to provide suggestions on decisive action to resolve or address these problems
- Oversee best practices company wide in financial modeling and budgeting
- Re/design as necessary all financial SOPs in a growing startup (for example, our expense reimbursement process)
- Be accountable for timely communication with creditors and debtors and all AR / AP workflows
- Oversee and guide the activities of a staff accountant
- Represent Vangarden’s financial interests in contract negotiation
- Coordinate the activities of external auditors
ABOUT YOU
You are a competent and compassionate leader, taking ownership of the finance domain via clear goal setting and managing buy-in and communications to make sure others are aware of your needs and your work. Additionally you are:
- A CPA with 5-7 years of experience in finance and accounting; MBA preferred
- Confident with 280e accounting for the Cannabis industry
- A natural problem solver, quickly compiling robust and accurate custom financial models
- Confident handling small tax liability intricacies (being able to handle account set up for out of state employees, understanding what thresholds will trigger liability, overseeing payroll company execution of these responsibilities, etc)

About The Role
Reporting to Vangarden’s VP of Sales and Marketing, the Director of Wholesale Sales will own relationships with executive members of retailers, namely CFOs; lead the charge on selling product into retail through methods including relationship building and product education; be the in-house expert on building and executing sales strategies; and manage and train the Vangarden salesforce you’ll oversee, with the goal of developing a best-in-class sales organization.
Specific Responsibilities
- Work with Vangarden's CEO and VP of Sales & Marketing to develop a best-in-class approach to sales pitches, especially those geared toward CFOs and retail executives, as they’ll be your target audience in gaining new business.
- Support the VP of Marketing's mandate to maintain liquidity on a diverse portfolio of premium, mid-market, and budget products across many brands. Use data to track sales performance to ensure targets are being hit and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Act as in-house expert on all Sales-related matters, including what tools are needed to land sales at retail; budtender education best practices; and activity, trends, and competitors in the market.
- Spend the bulk of your time in the field working with account executives to gain sales; securing orders for both new and existing products in the Vangarden portfolio; conducting budtender product education; and working closely with Vangarden sales reps.
- Provide continuous education and training to sales reps with the goal of developing a best-in-class salesforce.
- Actively seek industry event opportunities for Vangarden to participate in, from sponsorship opportunities to networking events. Work with VP of Sales & Marketing to coordinate and execute on Vangarden’s brand presence and employee attendance.
- Build an arsenal of data and translate them into insights that give your sales team an edge, and help Leadership make data-driven decisions.
- Support state-required compliance in sales, marketing, and delivery.
- Fulfill people-manager responsibilities for salesforce members, including scheduling, record keeping, training, education, and other logistics of field sales staff.
About You
Once upon a time, you got your thrills setting and surpassing ambitious sales targets. Nowadays, you're a master of your craft (and yet, ever a student!), leaning on your excellent data analysis, leadership skills, and creativity to build a high performing sales team from the ground up.
You are also:
- Experienced (3+ years) in managing sales staff.
- Experienced (2+ years) in the Massachusetts cannabis industry.
- Data driven, strategic, organized, and procedural.
- A self-starter with a solution-oriented mentality and strong work ethic.
- A role model for great communication skills. Clear, concise, and precise both verbally and in writing.
- Comfortable being a people-manager.
- Confident managing within a highly-regulated industry, such as Cannabis, Healthcare, or Finance.
- A collaborator with a “team-first” attitude.
