The Section Grower will report to the Facility Manager. They will help oversee all aspects of plant care and facility maintenance.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Section Grower is responsible for all aspects of growing and horticultural operations in a designated section of WinGen’s facility in Mustang Ridge, Texas. Primary areas of responsibility are:
- Ensure the highest plant quality of all crops at the facility in both a greenhouse and field setting
- Monitors area of responsibility for pests and diseases and ensures proper corrective measures are taken
- Collaborates with Plant Breeders and other research and development staff to ensure growing goals are met or exceeded
- Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of all structures and systems, as well as the facility grounds
- Lead and supervise other growing staff through daily tasks and safe practices in their assigned section
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Employee will work in accordance with WinGen LLC’s employee code of conduct and employment policies. Job is located at WinGen’s Mustang Ridge, TX facility and the employee must provide their own transportation.
- The employee will ideally hold a Texas non-commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License or acquire one within ninety (90) days of hire date. Alternatively, the employee must be able to apply pesticides on-site in a safe and lawful manner as a technician under WinGen’s Pesticide Applicator’s License.
- The employee must be authorized to work in the United States and maintain this eligibility at all times.
- Ability to work in outdoor and agricultural environments. Ability to stand for 30 minutes at a time, able to lift 20lbs.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in horticulture.

The Position
As an Urban Farm Production Associate focused on cultivation, you’ll be a member of the team that grows and prepares our standard-setting mushrooms for the shelf. Responsibilities include receiving and preparing materials, maintaining cleanliness, harvesting, assembling packaging, packing mushrooms, and ensuring that every finished product meets our quality standards. Working as a Production Associate at Smallhold will expose you to the fundamentals of production, cultivation, food safety, quality assurance, warehouse management and more.
The Challenge
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
- Follow Smallhold’s workplace safety procedures
- Perform procedures that involve best methods for cleaning and sanitizing to mitigate contamination risks
- Receive and unload raw material shipments ensuring all packaging is clean, free of defects, and labeled appropriately according to the purchaser
- Prepare agricultural materials for grow rooms
- Monitor growing mushrooms and head off quality concerns
- Harvest mushrooms, assembling packaging as needed
- Prepare spent agricultural product for composting
- Assist with data tracking and logging as neede
- Accurately pack, weigh, and label mushrooms for shipment or storage and in accordance with Smallhold quality standards
- Recognize potential contamination and the corrective actions to eradicate it
- Assist with receival and unloading of mushroom blocks weighing up to 30lbs
- Support daily harvest with weighing, labeling, and organizing harvested mushrooms according to species and FIFO rotation
- Maintain organization of inventory which includes but not limited to packaging, harvested mushrooms, and mushroom blocks
- Adhere to real time record keeping in compliance with Smallhold data tracking protocols and food safety traceability program
- Responsible for maintaining a clean environment throughout all areas of the operation in accordance with Smallhold’s food safety protocols and Good Agricultural Practices
- Comfortable with wearing proper PPE which includes but not limited to half-face respirators and KN95 masks
- Additional duties as assigned

The Position
As the Cultivation Manager at our expanding farm in Buda, TX, you will lead our Cultivation Team as we ramp up and optimize our facility. You will be primarily responsible for hitting mushroom production goals and ensuring cultivation activities are completed quickly, efficiently and up to Smallhold’s quality standards. You will create and oversee raw material ordering and cultivation schedules and ensure that products are ready to fulfill shipments out the door, in full and on time. Training and leading a growing team of staff will be an essential aspect of these purviews.
This is a high-pressure and fast-paced position that requires strong leadership capabilities in addition to a hands-on, execution-oriented approach.
The Challenge
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
- Lead the mushroom cultivation process from raw material receipt through compost to meet weekly production goals
- Manage and lead a team of Associates, Specialists and Leads
- Ramp up and optimize cultivation capacity. Our farm will double in size by the end of 2022
- Ensure cultivation data is tracked in real-time and logs and checklists are kept up to date
- Monitor grow room environments and grow room controls. Keep the mushrooms happy!
- Map supplier orders and harvest schedules to customer demand. Ensure all raw materials are ordered on time. Coordinate with Supply Chain on projections
- Write, implement and update SOPs. Ensure training of all new team members
- Partner with R&D and HQ Ops team to introduce new varieties and growing strategies
- Work with QA to create and update quality guides and partner on experiments as needed
- Integrate dehydration into daily operations to salvage surplus and minimize waste
- Ensure adherence to Smallhold’s food safety, organic and worker safety programs
- Work with HR and company leadership to meet quality of life metrics for your team
- Champion all Smallhold policies and address any workplace issues fairly and decisively
- Propose and execute on strategies for process improvement, growth and capacity expansion
- Foster a positive and collaborative environment. Be ready and willing to jump in on the line and troubleshoot alongside employees when needed
- Represent Smallhold’s values and reputation with all stakeholders
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of cultivation experience in commercial agriculture
- At least 2 years of management experience in a leadership position. Strong team-building and coaching skills. Experience managing a large team in a high-pressure environment
- Experience with SOP creation and implementation
- Strong aptitude for training and educating new team members
- Strong knowledge of and experience with food safety regulations. Experience with GAP strongly preferred, SQF experience is a major plus
- Experience with ERPs or similar software. Technologically proficient and capable of picking up new tools with ease. NetSuite experience is a plus
- Proficiency with Google Sheets and/or Excel. Comfort with creating projections, analyzing data and managing budgets
- Experience with data entry, maintaining records, checklists and other logs and forms
- Familiarity and comfort with electronics, plumbing, HVAC and refrigeration equipment is a plus
- Self starter with ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Get-it-done mentality. Willing to roll up sleeves and jump on the line as needed
