We are hiring for a Grower Manager for our Visalia, CA nursery. You will lead all aspects of growing quality ornamental shrubs on approximately 80 acres. Your role will include but is not limited to all farm activities required to successfully and efficiently produce container nursery stock, such as labor management, mechanization, and pulling, racking and loading orders. Major activities include potting, pruning, spacing, winter protection, and bed layout/space allocation, spray program implementation, equipment and facility upkeep, and field-crew management. The position will require excellent communication skills to facilitate activities between upper management, the field crew, and our external business partners and contract labor providers. This position will require outdoor work over 75% of the time in all types of weather. The successful candidate must also be well-organized, display a high attention to detail, and have an urgency to accomplish tasks in a fast-paced work place
Key responsibilities
- Management of growing and cultural techniques that support superior quality
- Work directly with labor contractor to delegate labor responsibilities
- Manage watering timing & practices, pinching, spacing, climate control, growing structures and pest management with support team
- Oversee water recycling and sanitation system.
- Develop and identify projects for new growing techniques that support operational efficiencies, continuous improvement and profitability to the company
- Create and manage records using crop assessments and risk data
- Promote high morale, a team approach, and a positive work environment
Qualifications/Education
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field preferred
- Five years’ industry experience
- Comprehensive knowledge on production of quality perennials and shrubs
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
- Pesticide applicator’s license (can be obtained once hired) Must be willing to obtain a PCA, QAL, or QAC
