The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks a Maryland Shellfish Growers Network Intern in its Philip Merrill Environmental Center headquarters office located in Annapolis, Maryland. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most work will be remote, but may require the intern to be in office.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION
The primary role of the Maryland Shellfish Growers Network Intern will be to assist the Maryland Fisheries Scientist with the development and implementation of the Maryland Shellfish Growers Network. The Maryland Shellfish Growers Network is a resource for shellfish growers that provides training, technical assistance, outreach, and mentoring to its members to help support and promote the aquaculture industry in Maryland. The Maryland Shellfish Growers Network supports the goals of the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance to add 10 billion oysters to the Bay by 2025.
Throughout the internship, there will be additional opportunities for participation in oyster restoration activities, research projects, and policy work supporting the implementation of ecosystem-based fisheries management. Candidates should be comfortable on the water and working on vessels.
Essential functions include:
- Researching and reporting on oyster aquaculture topics of interest
- Developing newsletters and correspondence for members of the Shellfish Growers Network
- Managing projects and completing deliverables on time
- Compiling and maintaining databases
- Outreach to oyster farmers
- Writing reports and memos for internal and external audiences
- Occasional travel to evening meetings
PREFERRED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Successful candidate should be an undergraduate college student or recent graduate majoring in
environmental science, environmental policy, marine affairs, or another related field. Applicants must be available for 10-12 weeks. Intern will be required to work certain weekdays and occasionally in the evening. Candidate should have reliable transportation for occasional travel.
Self-motivation, the ability to work independently, and strong written and oral communication skills are required. Candidates familiar with reviewing the primary scientific literature and those with design, photography and/or videography skills are preferred.
This is a part-time position and offers a stipend.

We are seeking highly motivated, hardworking student interns looking to pursue careers in commercial horticulture as a grower.
Grower/Internship Position:
It is our goal at Bell to provide a rewarding and educational experience to the student/intern. The internship is a 7-week program (the time period can vary depending on a student's school calendar) focused on greenhouse production and is designed for individuals with a serious interest in becoming a commercial grower. The student/intern will primarily be part of the growing and production team but will also be exposed to as many different areas of the business as possible.
Intern Project:
The student/intern will also be assigned a special project that will benefit both Bell Nursery, as well as be an opportunity for the student to show initiative and achieve a sense of responsibility. While the focus of the internship will be the grower position, the intern will also be exposed to as many facets of the business as possible. The student/intern will interact with managers of each department to learn how each department runs as well as how the different departments interact within the company.
Other areas may include:
- Logistics and Distribution – the student/intern will spend time at our distribution warehouse and be exposed to distribution reports and tools that guide our product distribution

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate.
