Faculty, Biological and Biochemical Research
Morehouse School Of Medicine
In support of Morehouse School of Medicine’s Vision; “Leading the creation and advancement of health equity,” the Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Immunology (MBI) is seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor, Biological and Biochemical Research.
Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) is developing a Natural Products Research Center (NPRC), which will focus on biological and biochemical research aimed at identifying, validating, and developing therapies from plant products. The NPRC is establishing a new area of research around medical cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. Hence, the successful candidate will be expected to work with existing and future NPRC faculty and staff, to teach and train students in biochemistry, and metabolite analysis, while developing or maintaining their own independent, yet collaborative, research program. Thus, we are seeking a candidate with (i) expertise in the endocannabinoid system and (ii) the background in this system to build this new area at MSM. Preferred linked broad research areas that already exist at MSM are: cancer, infectious diseases, neurology, or cardiometabolic disease. Finally, familiarity with, and/or experience using, current bioinformatic methods to analyze and visualize data (e.g., proteomic, metabolomic, lipidomic) is important.
The Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Immunology (MBI) has a national and international network allowing a wide array of, and ample opportunities for collaboration in multiple research areas. These areas include immunology, drug development, genomics, complementary & integrative health, natural product-based research, cancer, and infectious diseases including virology, protozoology, and bacteriology. MSM has renovated core facilities providing both basic shared-use equipment as well as specialized services such as microparticle analysis, zebra fish development, and advanced imaging facilities.
Rank: Assistant/Associate Professor
Faculty members have additional access to core facilities as part of:
(I) The Georgia Clinical Translational Science Academy (https://georgiactsa.org/)
(II) The Georgia Core Facilities Partnership, which links many intensive research institutions across Georgia allowing access across the partnership to their core facilities
(III) The RCMI Translational Research Network (https://www.rtrn.net/) which is a collaborative organization of 18 minority serving institutions across the US. These resources obviously contribute to the outstanding research environment and provide a wide range of opportunities for collaborative research within MSM, and our regional partners.
The initial faculty appointment will be for a period of twelve (12) months with the possibility of renewal.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD or MD with strong research background in a biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and/or medicinal chemistry in the endocannabinoid system.
Must either have or be already developing a successful, externally funded research program.
Documented experience teaching Biochemistry at the graduate level.
Demonstrated commitment to mentoring demographically diverse and/or underrepresented minority students.
Documented experience working in a team science environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong research background in lipid-based molecules as chemical messages.
Expertise in and/or interest in isolating, identifying and characterizing molecules from plants, bacteria, viruses, or fungi with therapeutic potential.
