The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Planning and Building is seeking an experienced manager to lead the Cannabis Land Use Planning Division. This division is responsible for developing and implementing land use policy as it relates to cannabis activities in the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County. The cannabis regulatory framework, which was established by the Board of Supervisors, provides a unique opportunity to work within a new area of land use planning. The division manager will lead a team of professional planners, be responsible for tracking and monitoring revenue and budget, review and prepare environmental documents pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act, assemble staff reports for Board of Supervisors meetings, and present at community meetings and hearings.

The Ideal Candidate
The selected candidate must have strong leadership and communication skills, as well as a seasoned political acumen. The division manager will work collaboratively with many stakeholders, including staff across Planning and Building and other County departments, applicants, outside organizations and community members. The candidate must have a background in professional planning and experience providing oversight to several staff while managing multiple projects and programs concurrently. The division manager will oversee complex and politically sensitive cannabis projects and must demonstrate an objective and reasonable work ethic.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning, engineering, geography, natural resources management, environmental, physical or life science, or a closely related field. (Job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.) In addition, five years of experience, two years of which were in a supervisory position.
Licenses and Certificates
Certain positions within this classification may require driving. When driving is an essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver license will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
