Job Description
We are hiring a Compliance Officer to oversee regulatory compliance with all applicable state and local laws and regulations across manufacturing, distribution, and delivery operations. The Compliance Officer will keep the management team up to date on legal and regulatory matters impacting operations, assist in the development of company policies and standard operating procedures, monitor operations to identify and correct instances of non-compliance, and function as a quasi-independent and objective body that reviews and evaluates compliance issues/concerns within the organization.
The person who fulfills this role will also advise and guide the C-Suite executives, Owners, management personnel, and employees on applicable local, and state laws and regulations, and will be called upon to issue spot non-compliance, provide answers to complex questions, and help find lawful yet innovative solutions to tricky issues. and that company policies and procedures are being followed.
The Compliance Officer will also work with a variety of departments to develop and implement replicable processes, policies, and audits related to compliance and ensure their effectiveness. The Officer will ensure reporting, registration, filing, and other similar mandatory tasks are completed in a timely fashion and coordinate with Sunderstorm’s management to stay ahead of any future changes in regulations.
Our ideal candidate is detail-oriented, self-motivated, and has in-depth knowledge of cannabis laws and regulations.
Candidates must:
1) Be at least 21 years of age.
2) Have a Bachelor’s Degree or better from an accredited college or university.
3) Possess excellent reading, writing, and communication skills.
4) Have an in-depth understanding of all applicable existing and recent cannabis laws and regulations in the City of Los Angeles and in California.
5) Have multiple years of experience working in another highly regulated industry, ideally in a compliance-related position.
6) Have strong attention to detail and a natural aptitude for organization and systematization.
7) Be generally positive, adaptable, and team-oriented.
Required
- Maintain thorough and up-to-date knowledge of state Cannabis laws and regulations.
- Advise the Chief Compliance Officer and Executives of any crucial compliance issues or changes that could impact the company.
- Manage essential operating records creation and retention.
- Ensure each department head is set up for success and is trained in the records and record quality required for that department.
- Develop Quality Assurance standards for all critical processes, and create process maps and standard operating procedures for all compliance implementation and maintenance.
- Monitor all internal company information systems including but not limited to: Metrc, ERP Systems, Payroll Systems, Google Drives.
- Write Remediation Plans as needed for any product type and assist with the optimization of compliant packaging information and implementation.
- Develop a thorough understanding of operations and the work-flow requirements for each department. Use this knowledge to understand the current record keeping systems, then adapt or add to these to ensure compliance and efficient archiving.
- Perform monthly inventory audits at all operational sites.
- Act as the on-site compliance liaison between state regulators and other Sunderstorm staff
- Develop and maintain optimum work-flow processes, and maximize productivity and efficiency
- Ensure workplace health and safety policies and procedures are followed
- Develop and implement an annual employee training program
- Assist state and local government auditors and law enforcement with inventory, sales and compliance audits
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Scope of work will evolve as our business operations expand in other legal states
- Responsible for establishing and documenting all aspects of compliance requirements to meet all state laws and regulations
- Seeks to understand all aspects of distribution and manufacturing and facility usage patterns to effectively plan for compliance and auditing requirements
- Communicates all compliance related issues to the CCO in a clear, consistent and effective way possible
- Develops an audit plan and schedule and perform all audits per schedule
- Writes audit reports and issues audit follow-up documents in a timely manner
- Serves as a subject matter expert and resource for all staff concerning products and services, policies and procedures, industry news, and changes in regulations
- Responsible for the development and oversight of State compliance in alignment with corporate compliance model and best practices (investigations, CAPA's, SOP development, critical incident reporting, training and education, regulatory body collaboration, risk assessments, emergency response management)
- Must be 21 or older with valid CA ID or Driver's License

Knowledge of cannabis regulations concerning other states aside from California preferred.
