SCOPE OF POSITION:
The Business Development Manager (BDM) serves as the commercial representative for Smithers Cannabis Testing Services division and is directly responsible for planning, directing and executing an industry-based field sales strategy; delivering profitable sales growth for his/her state; and visiting clients face-to-face to build trusted relationships and customer loyalty.
This individual will embody a strong personal character coupled with a broad business acumen and technical aptitude; vital competencies essential to navigating the complex and dynamic market conditions. Major responsibilities include growing revenue and the opportunity pipeline; initiating, developing and leading sales campaigns; and driving growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Primary objective is driving orders and establishing market share dominance for the Smithers Cannabis Testing Services lab.
- Demonstrates expertise in selling 3rd party testing services and aptitude to comprehend complex science-based issues specific to the cannabis industry
- Engages existing as well as prospective clients through face-to-face interactions with a heightened emphasis on new, prospective client engagement
- Creates a culture of competitiveness and winning; sets a high bar for competitive account conversions
- Sets the strategic direction for key accounts; prioritizes and builds successful account plans, competes to secure maximum portion of annual spend
- Fosters a collaborative selling culture inclusive of peers, marketing personnel as well as Subject Matter Experts (SME)
- Utilizes Infor CRM system to track opportunities; embraces Sales Job Aids for opportunity management
- Adheres to the Smithers tenets of sales: 1) Prepare for Customer Engagements; 2) Assess Opportunities; 3) Manage Strategic Accounts; 4) Forecast the Business
- Communicates and works to resolve client satisfaction concerns
- Develops sales section of annual operating plan for accounts and industries
- Identifies and understands trends in the marketplace; communicates competitive situations at clients or within industry

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree business, marketing, communications, or related field
- Advanced Degree (Master’s or MBA) preferred
- Minimum five years’ experience in B2B sales
- Experience in cannabis, agrochemical, environmental science, or pharma is a significant advantage
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
- 70% out-of-office travel
- Visiting clients at their site(s); hosting clients at Smithers Cannabis Testing Services lab
- Attending industry and professional trade meetings and conferences

Job Summary
The individual will be responsible for maintenance of microbiology equipment, primarily automated instrumentation as well as other standard and non-standard microbiological instrumentation. The Microbiologist will conduct, troubleshoot and oversee microbiological analysis of cannabis flower, concentrates and infused products as required by state cannabis regulatory body regulations within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. The Microbiologist will be responsible for coordinating scheduling with the Laboratory Manager, conducting sample analysis, identifying areas where efficiencies can be implemented into laboratory process workflows, and supporting sales meetings as requested by laboratory management. As time allows, the Microbiologist will also be cross-trained to conduct sample preparation and extraction for subsequent chemical analyses.
The Microbiologist will be responsible for training and oversight of employees working in the microbiology area.
Past job experience or training gained obtaining a master’s degree appropriate to microbiology are preferred. The Microbiologist is expected to have developed an ability to optimize the laboratory workflows to maximize throughput and efficiency while maintaining a high level of quality. Additionally, the individual must be able to represent Smithers to clients both over the phone and in person and transmit a professional image.
A. Job Duties
Essential Functions:
1. Conduct sample analysis in accordance with validated methods and SOPs
2. Ensure timely reporting of results to meet deadlines.
3. Ensure results meet all quality requirements.
4. Analyze microbiology data, and where necessary, troubleshoot unexpected results.
5. Subject matter expert for microbiological analysis.
6. Record and organize data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and/or laboratory notebooks
7. Train and oversee employees working in the microbiology function.
8. Maintenance and upkeep of instrumentation.
9. Ensure state regulatory compliance of tests. Advise Smithers on changes to regulatory requirements for microbiological testing of cannabis and cannabis products.
10. Ensure ISO 17025 compliance of relevant studies and processes.
11. Additional duties as assigned, including cross-training to conduct chemical analyses
Good technical writing skills in microbiology [written and oral comprehension, written and oral expression]. Ability to integrate observations (visual and written, discrimina¬tion) into evaluation process. College math [mathematical reasoning, memorizing]. Ability to work at a fast pace without compromising accuracy or completeness, prioritize work assignments and handle stress [high productivity].

B. Chemical Safety
1. Must be able to comprehend the potential hazards of the chemicals in use and adhere to the proper safety techniques as dictated by the Safety Manual and/or Management.

1. Must be able to wear gloves, lab coat, eye protection, sleeves, hearing protection, pesticide suit, plastic booties, dust masks, a respirator, and a face mask.
2. Must be able to understand and follow laboratory safety standards.
Job Specifications
B.S. degree in microbiology or related field required, Master’s degree in microbiology or related field preferred, 2-3 years of relevant laboratory experience. Previous experience in a cannabis testing lab is a plus. Proficiency in documentation and procedures required by ISO 17025 preferred.
