The Horticulture Forestry and Environmental Education Division of Montgomery Parks is seeking a
Container Grower Assistant to join Pope Farm Nursery’s production operation team located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This position is responsible for growing and maintaining native plants to help fulfill plant orders and make recommendations to other park staff to help promote the use of native plants. This expert level position involves the use of various types of equipment, performing varying assignments related to tree and plant production, directing and training other workers in growing operations and performs designated administrative duties as assigned.
Montgomery Parks has 424 parks encompassing 37,000 acres of trails, natural areas, athletic fields, playgrounds, stormwater facilities, a plant production nursery and botanical garden. Montgomery Parks has 45 pesticide free parks where products approved by Montgomery County Law can be used. All 275 Park playgrounds are pesticide free. Staff manages other amenities such as athletic fields, landscape plantings and infrastructure using integrated pest management principles. Examples of Important Duties
- Independently applies horticulture knowledge to grow and maintain plant material, assists in coordinating production schedules, and various tasks related to the work programs.
- Assists in maintaining an inventory database and tracking system for all plant material.
- Implements proper practices for the production of various plants including but not limited to planting, transplanting, monitoring irrigation systems, herbicide applications, pruning, fertilization, and field/soil preparation.
- Operates power hand tools, mowers, tractors and skid steers with various attachments, front end loaders, trucks, utility vehicles.
- Practice IPM principles for plant health care by utilizing alternative treatment methods and/or incorporating pesticides as appropriate in a safe and effective manner according to regulations.
- Keeps accurate records of pesticide applications and follows posting requirements and the use of PPE as set forth by the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
Participates in training of other Parks staff on Horticultural practices and takes part in Park sponsored events such as Arbor Day to promote education and advocacy for the field of Horticulture.
Oversees seasonal staff and/or volunteers to include training, assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and maintaining records of hours worked.
Takes a lead role in coordinating and performing the grounds/landscape maintenance of Pope Farm which includes but is not limited to mowing, weed control, mulching, pruning, gravel road maintenance, erosion control, fence maintenance, monitoring facility infrastructure for any needed service.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Assoiciate of Arts Degree in Horticulture or related area plus three years of progressively responsible gardening and greenhouse/horticultural /nursery experience, or
2. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience in horticultural, greenhouse or nursery work.
3. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations , suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehciles or perform driving duties required of their position.
4. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's certification.
5. Pass commission medical examination.
6. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may
require:
a) U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant and Animal Protection Service Permit, for
acquiring and maintaining live exhibits upon appointment, or within 6 months.
b) Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsement upon appointment,
or within 6 months.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions
Works in nursery, container production and greenhouse settings. Exposed to weather, dirt, dust, and horticultural chemicals. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required to apply certain chemicals. Work requires bending, lifting and occasionally carrying heavy objects.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Associate of Arts Degree in Horticulture or related area plus three years of progressively responsible gardening and greenhouse/horticultural /nursery experience, or
2. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience in horticultural, greenhouse or nursery work.
3. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations , suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
4. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's certification.
5. Pass commission medical examination.
6. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may
require:
a) U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant and Animal Protection Service Permit, for
acquiring and maintaining live exhibits upon appointment, or within 6 months.
b) Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsement upon appointment,
or within 6 months.

We are currently seeking a motivated, highly organized, and professional Greenhouse Grower to perform a broad range of Greenhouse work for Brookside Gardens. The potential candidate should be a highly collaborative team member that will put Brookside Gardens’ mission first and help to deliver remarkable experiences to our guests. The Principal Greenhouse/Nursery Technician is responsible for producing high quality annuals, perennials, tropical and woody plants to support the display gardens, conservatories, landscapes, education programs and gift shops. Examples of Important Duties
What the job will involve
Planning, Scheduling & Growing
- Coordinate a complex schedule of crop production for conservatory displays, special events, outdoor seasonal displays, and gift shops.
- Produce all seasonal annuals, perennials, and tropical plants used throughout the gardens.
- Maintain healthy stock plants and rotating greenhouse collections.
- Monitor greenhouse temperatures, humidity, and moisture levels.
- Receive seeds, plugs, herbaceous and woody plant material for production.
- Receive and stock materials and supplies to support production operations.
- Update plant requestor and supervisor continuously on crop status.
- Maintain accurate records, files and inventories for plant propagation, plant labels, grow lights, and crop production.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
- Use IPM practices to identify, monitor and manage pests, diseases, and weeds.
- Implement and coordinate a biological control program.
- Record pesticide applications according to commission practice and the law.
- Keep pesticide and equipment inventories properly maintained.
- Maintain a clean growing environment.
Administrative & Supervisory Support
- Assist Supervisor in selection and ordering of plant materials, supplies and equipment.
- Maintain fertilizer application records to meet requirements of Nutrient Management Program mandated by the state of Maryland.
- Supervise seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns throughout the year.
Important Skills and Characteristics
- Proficient knowledge of plant identification, greenhouse control systems, plant cultural requirements, and disease/pest recognition.
- Broad growing knowledge of diverse plant material for indoor and outdoor display gardens and exhibits.
- Demonstrated skill in all areas of crop production.
- Ability to use hand tools and power equipment safely.
- Willingness to share horticultural knowledge with visitors, volunteers, and staff in informal settings and through formally scheduled programs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including use of Microsoft Office suite and other specialized programs.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships and deal tactfully with community partners, visitors, students, volunteers, instructors, and staff. Ability to work effectively with others despite differences of opinion and style; builds alliances.
- Organized, reliable, accurate and detail oriented with ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to perform strenuous work in all weather conditions. Working in extreme high and low temperatures, apply pesticides, operate equipment, interact with visitors in a formal/informal setting, stoop, bend, stretch, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Some evening and weekend work is required, including assisting with special events.
