Dispensary Registered Nurse Summary
Supervises and provides dispensing activities in the dispensary under the direction of healthcare providers and Director of Nursing.
Essential Duties and Functions:
Dispensary Overview
- Performs dispensing duties according to the Nursing Practice Act and regulations set forth by the Board of Pharmacy.
- Perform duties as set forth by TCC’s Dispensary Policy and procedures.
- Maintain continuous quality improvement for all dispensary activities.
- Maintain all pharmaceutical inventory.
- Supervision of dispensary staff.
- Insulin teach and education for newly diagnosed diabetic patients.
- Completes all paperwork for obtaining medicines through the Patient Assistance Program and orders refill as needed; also follows up with patients as to obtaining any income documentation needed for the program.
- Follows upon an on-going basis with the pharmaceutical representative to obtain sample medications.
- Maintenance of a file system.
- Fax in prescriptions, to the pharmacy, as directed by a clinician.
- Assist in providing/dispensing pharmaceutical products and devices to patients under the supervision of providers.
- Regular monitoring and inventory medication supplies and order as needed.
- Inventory and packaging of expired medications to be sent for destruction.
- Monitor and inventory medical supplies and order as needed.
- Receives and disburses satellite sites inventory in separate containers.
- Conduct clerical duties when dispensary clerk is not available. This includes but is not limited to: data entry into Epic, answering the telephone, filing, etc.
Promote effective and efficient patient care
- Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) activities as it relates to the dispensary.
- Maintain proper and accurate documentation and logs.
- Work as a team player and be willing to assist other members in other duties within his/her capabilities, to aid the clinic team in providing good efficient patient care.
- Reassure patients and their families.
- Assist in providing translation services as needed.
- Facilitate patient flow by working effectively and efficiently.
- Maintain open communication with other clinic staff.
- Maintain professional demeanor and excellence in customer service at all times with patients, caregivers, clinicians, and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Other Duties
- Obtain from patient specimens, including blood, urine, sputum, etc. as directed by clinicians while following safety standards.
- Prepare specimen samples for laboratory pick-up.
- Perform simple assays (i.e. finger-stick, glucose, urine dipstick analysis, stool for occult blood, urine pregnancy test) under the direction of clinicians.
- Administer inoculations, nebulizer treatment, and simple catherization under the supervision of a clinician.
- Ensure immunization follow-ups are sent in a timely manner and maintain accurately immunization record and inventory.
- Maintain lab area cleanliness and ensure containment of hazardous waste.
- Check and calibrate laboratory equipment and lob daily.
- Document all specimen collected from immunization given to patients.
- Perform EKG, spirometry, peak flow measurement, and CHDP required services (i.e. audio, vision, physical, and emotional growth measurements) as ordered by clinicians.
- Retrieve laboratory results from the printer, monitor and cross-reference with orders, and disseminate labs to clinicians for review.
- Ensure that laboratory results are in the patient’s medical record before an appointment and contact the laboratory if the results are not in the chart.
Professional Development/Others
- Attend APHCV staff meeting, clinic staff meeting, department meetings and other meetings as assigned by the supervisor.
- Attend trainings as assigned by the supervisor.
- Communicate training needs to supervisor.
- Participate in agency-wide events as mandated by TCC’s policy.
Education and Qualifications Requirements:
- Licensed to work in the state of California as an RN by the California Department of Consumer Affairs.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current RN license, BCLS certification.
- Regular predicable attendance during clinic hours.
- Ability to work efficiently and accurately with minimum supervision.
- Legal authorization to work in the US, a valid California Driver’s license, and access to an insured automobile.
Preferred Skills:
- Good communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills including the ability to have patience and convey a warm, caring attitude for patients.
- Willingness to learn new skills.
- Knowledge of medical office procedures.
- Able to work with people of diverse cultural, educational, social, economic, and linguistic backgrounds.
Working Conditions:

Dispensary Registered Nurse Summary
Supervises and provides dispensing activities in the dispensary under the direction of healthcare providers and Director of Nursing.
Essential Duties and Functions:
Dispensary Overview
- Performs dispensing duties according to the Nursing Practice Act and regulations set forth by the Board of Pharmacy.
- Perform duties as set forth by TCC’s Dispensary Policy and procedures.
- Maintain continuous quality improvement for all dispensary activities.
- Maintain all pharmaceutical inventory.
- Supervision of dispensary staff.
- Insulin teach and education for newly diagnosed diabetic patients.
- Completes all paperwork for obtaining medicines through the Patient Assistance Program and orders refill as needed; also follows up with patients as to obtaining any income documentation needed for the program.
- Follows upon an on-going basis with the pharmaceutical representative to obtain sample medications.
- Maintenance of a file system.
- Fax in prescriptions, to the pharmacy, as directed by a clinician.
- Assist in providing/dispensing pharmaceutical products and devices to patients under the supervision of providers.
- Regular monitoring and inventory medication supplies and order as needed.
- Inventory and packaging of expired medications to be sent for destruction.
- Monitor and inventory medical supplies and order as needed.
- Receives and disburses satellite sites inventory in separate containers.
- Conduct clerical duties when dispensary clerk is not available. This includes but is not limited to: data entry into Epic, answering the telephone, filing, etc.
Promote effective and efficient patient care
- Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) activities as it relates to the dispensary.
- Maintain proper and accurate documentation and logs.
- Work as a team player and be willing to assist other members in other duties within his/her capabilities, to aid the clinic team in providing good efficient patient care.
- Reassure patients and their families.
- Assist in providing translation services as needed.
- Facilitate patient flow by working effectively and efficiently.
- Maintain open communication with other clinic staff.
- Maintain professional demeanor and excellence in customer service at all times with patients, caregivers, clinicians, and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Other Duties
- Obtain from patient specimens, including blood, urine, sputum, etc. as directed by clinicians while following safety standards.
- Prepare specimen samples for laboratory pick-up.
- Perform simple assays (i.e. finger-stick, glucose, urine dipstick analysis, stool for occult blood, urine pregnancy test) under the direction of clinicians.
- Administer inoculations, nebulizer treatment, and simple catherization under the supervision of a clinician.
- Ensure immunization follow-ups are sent in a timely manner and maintain accurately immunization record and inventory.
- Maintain lab area cleanliness and ensure containment of hazardous waste.
- Check and calibrate laboratory equipment and lob daily.
- Document all specimen collected from immunization given to patients.
- Perform EKG, spirometry, peak flow measurement, and CHDP required services (i.e. audio, vision, physical, and emotional growth measurements) as ordered by clinicians.
- Retrieve laboratory results from the printer, monitor and cross-reference with orders, and disseminate labs to clinicians for review.
- Ensure that laboratory results are in the patient’s medical record before an appointment and contact the laboratory if the results are not in the chart.
Professional Development/Others
- Attend APHCV staff meeting, clinic staff meeting, department meetings and other meetings as assigned by the supervisor.
- Attend trainings as assigned by the supervisor.
- Communicate training needs to supervisor.
- Participate in agency-wide events as mandated by TCC’s policy.
Education and Qualifications Requirements:
- Licensed to work in the state of California as an RN by the California Department of Consumer Affairs.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current RN license, BCLS certification.
- Regular predicable attendance during clinic hours.
- Ability to work efficiently and accurately with minimum supervision.
- Legal authorization to work in the US, a valid California Driver’s license, and access to an insured automobile.
Preferred Skills:
- Good communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills including the ability to have patience and convey a warm, caring attitude for patients.
- Willingness to learn new skills.
- Knowledge of medical office procedures.
- Able to work with people of diverse cultural, educational, social, economic, and linguistic backgrounds.
Working Conditions:
Indoor office setting, space limited, air-conditioned in the summer and central heat during the winter. Occasionally required to be outdoors for travel, and can be exposed to variable weather conditions. Occasional travel from one clinic location to another for patient care purposes and meetings.
Occasional exposure to noise, moisture, noxious odors and gases. Occasional exposure to dust, dirt, cold, biological and chemical agents.
Work hours: 8-hour workdays with variable/flexible hours depending on clinic needs. Overtime may be required.
