Smith Gardens is a Wholesale Nursery company that is headquartered in Bellingham Washington, and is family owned for over 100 years with facilities in three states.
The Aurora site opened in 1997, and is located just 30 minutes south of Portland, Oregon in the beautiful Willamette Valley. The site has 37 acres of greenhouse and 3 acres of field space. In 2013, we added a 3-acre State-of-the-art glass greenhouse which has allowed the facility to re-purpose 40,000 gallons of water every day helping to reduce our carbon footprint.
JOB FUNCTION:
Responsible for daily irrigation, fertilization and misting of crops. Coordinate with Head Grower to determine crop cultural needs. Maintain environmental controls, assists with pest controls, sanitation of area, and crop layout.
JOB DUTIES:
- Responsible for 2-4 acres of greenhouse or 5-10 acres of field, or an area of 25,000 square feet of plugs and liners.
- Coordinates the work of 2-4 Irrigation Staff.
- Responsible for daily irrigation, fertilization and crop watering.
- Apply pesticides in a safe and effective manner.
- Maintain environmental controls, assist with pest controls, area sanitation, and crop layout.
- Adjust & maintain misting schedules of propagation areas.
- Responsible for reporting fertility results to head grower.
- Communicate problems to Head Grower.
- Willingness to work longer hours seasonally as crops require.
- Support and enforce all company policies and rules.
- Responsible for obtaining up to date and new cultural methods of propagation.
- Maintain crop records in propagation.
- Use EC meter to check water and soil in field tests, as well as a pH meter and alkalinity test kit.
- Adjusts manual vents and thermostats to achieve a target, understands importance of hand purging houses, and watching the climate closely.
- Follow directions from Head Grower regarding activities such as watering decisions, feeding decisions, EC levels, and PPMs.
- Perform and lead others in drench applications of growth regulators as directed by supervisor and knows all safety regulations.
- Lead accurate execution of drench applications of pesticides, fungicides.
- Assist in WPS training for Spanish-speaking employees.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing, in person, via phone, and over the radio with all levels of staff.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, both verbal and written.
- Able to follow the culture sheets in order to induce flowering.
- Able to follow detailed instructions, and pass them to subordinates.
- Able to check EC and pH of downstream water and monitor accuracy, as well as basic trouble checks.
- Personal leadership skills.
- Positive customer service attitude and work ethic.
- Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced working environment.
- Solid computer and Microsoft office skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Work indoors and outdoors, in seasonal temperatures and conditions.
- Lift up to 50 pounds in an environment that is often hot.
- Continuously walk, stand, bend, kneel (and remain working below knee-level) as well as reaching overhead, and from side to side for long periods of time.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
- Associate's level degree in Horticulture or related field, and at least one year work experience.
- Familiar with the uses of the different chemicals and a basic knowledge of pests and diseases and knows related safety regulations.
- Understands plants that are run especially dry (1-2) to cause flowering.
- Needs direction on fertilizers to apply and appropriate rates for each plant.
- Needs direction on the safe applications of all pesticides and fungicides.
- A valid pesticide applicator’s license must be obtained within 60 days of starting this position and kept current.
- Previous leadership experience a plus.
- Able to use spraying equipment.
- Knowledge of basic bedding plant identification.
- Some mechanical aptitude.

Opened in 1988, our Marysville location is the largest site of the Smith Gardens family consisting of 60 acres, with 500,000 square feet of greenhouse space. Marysville is the primary site for perennial production, Mums, hanging baskets and annuals.
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for daily irrigation and fertilization of crops. Coordinate with assistant head grower to determine crop culture needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Responsible for up to 5 acres of green house and/or up to 10 acres of field.

Pacific Plug & Liner was founded in October 1999. We are located on the beautiful California Central Coast with a climate ideal for young plant production. We have approximately 250,000 sq. ft. dedicated to growing young plants. We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Head Grower to join our team in Watsonville, CA.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Assistant Head Grower is responsible for ensuring the quality and consistency of the cultural techniques used to grow our crops. The Assistant Head Grower has an active role in trials and crop cultural needs and leads the Section Grower team with a focus on Plugs and Liners, Tissue Culture and Integrated Pest Management program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee crops to ensure environment and cultural needs are met for superior quality, yield, and timing.
- Manage all aspects of Tissue Culture (TC) crops, such as weaning, fertility, incoming quality and standard size. Create and execute SOP’s.
- Communicate in a timely manner on potential crop questions and issues. Work proactively with Head Grower to find solutions and take necessary actions to solve or minimize potential challenges.
- Maintain greenhouse software and make adjustments to provide an optimum environment for all crops.
- Work with Production to troubleshoot TC crops and communicate to breeder/supplier for quality related issues.
- Lead daily Section Grower meeting and weekly training.
- Assist in development of Trial Garden.
- Manage IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program that uses biological and conventional controls.
- Partner with Head Grower on PGR (Plant Growth Regulator) SOP and help monitor implementation.
COMPETENCIES:
- Capable identification of pests and diseases.
- Thorough understanding of pH and fertility.
- Computer and Microsoft Office skills.
- Bilingual (English and some Spanish) preferred.
- Ability to work longer hours during busy season (typically December – April).
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Positive attitude and work ethic.
- Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced working environment.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor degree in Horticulture (preferred) or related field and 3 years of young plant and/or plug & liner growing experience in the greenhouse/nursery/field.
- 2 years or more of supervisory experience.
- Current valid pesticide applicator license.
- Experience with beneficial insects (biological control) and pesticide (chemical control)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Work indoors and outdoors, in seasonal temperatures and lift up to 50 pounds
- Continuously walk, stand, bend, kneel as well as reaching overhead, and from side to side for long periods of time.
- Wear respirators and other PPE for a long period of time.

JOB FUNCTION:
Manage the Growing Team under the direction of the Head Grower, and ensure prompt delivery to internal customers. This position spends the majority of time walking and inspecting crops and supervising and training Section Growers and Irrigation Staff to prioritize their daily tasks, scouting, identifying issues with crops, working with the IPM Coordinator, and performing culture trials (GR, fertilizer, dry down, temperature trials).
JOB DUTIES:
- Oversee the Sections Growers, coach them on detailed specifics of crops.
- Train on the proper use of irrigation tools and equipment.
- Purchase and maintain grower supplies such as boom parts, office supplies, EC/pH equipment, etc.
- Ensure completion of weekly EC/pH testing. Manage crop nutrition and fertilizer inventory.
- Develop best practices and Standard Work for specific crops, tasks, and processes.
- Help develop Growing Team through Continuous Improvement initiatives (6S, PDI, TPM) and continued education.
- Maintain the health and quality of liners that are received. Work with Growing, Production, and Plant Maintenance to plan cutbacks, GRs, planting depth, planting priority, etc.
- Write, present, and manage Section Grower annual performance reviews.
- Walk regularly with the Head Grower to discuss crop culture and plans.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing, in person, and via phone or radio with all levels of staff.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, both verbal and written.

- Experience with perennials and annuals are required.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
- Pesticide applicator’s license (can be obtained once hired).
- Knowledge of biological controls and IPM programs.
- Knowledge of PRIVA and ARGUS environmental control systems.
