LEAD GROWER/GREENHOUSE TECHNICIAN
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
This is skilled gardening work propagating and cultivating a variety of native perennials, grasses, shrubs, trees, and other plants as well as maintaining and managing the holding stock of the native plant nursery. An employee in this position is responsible for the proper temperature control of the structures and open holding areas. Work is performed largely individually, with assistance from garden center employees and under the management of the nursery operations manager.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Maintains greenhouse and nursery as a functioning propagation facility, including buildings, hoop houses and cold frames; propagates plants by budding, layering, or dividing in a greenhouse or cold frames; cultivates plants by watering, applying fertilizers, and regulating temperatures by ventilation and heating controls; maintains all plants stored on site that are not in active retail.
Makes soil mixes; makes cuttings; plants, transplants and prunes a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, trees and other plants in the greenhouse and nursery.
Develops nursery maintenance and propagation systems and oversees their implementation
Works with the nursery operations manager to ensure the consistent, quality supply of plant stock to the nursery and its affiliated landscaping businesses
Has at minimum a working knowledge of native plants and actively works to expand that knowledge base
Maintains and manages nursery equipment and supplies
Maintains an accurate, live inventory of all plants involved in the growing program with the help of the operations manager and garden center employees
Operates hand and power tools and equipment such as leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, drills, sprayers, rakes, shovels and hoes.
Participates in the maintenance of the grounds surrounding related facilities; maintains nursery equipment and supplies.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· methods and materials used in propagating, cultivating and transplanting stock in greenhouses and nurseries.
· plants native to the southeastern united states and their growing habits, methods of propagation and potential insect and disease issues
· the common insects, fungi, and diseases which affect flowers, shrubs and trees; integrated pest management methods
· appropriate sanitation practices as they apply to the propagation and continued care of plants on property
· greenhouse and nursery facility operations
SKILL IN:
· native plant identification
· pest management
· relevant methods of propagating plants.
· the use and care of gardening tools and equipment.
· the handling of seeds
ABILITY TO (or ACTIVELY WORKING TO BE ABLE TO):
· apply growth regulators, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers.
· propagate, cultivate and force grow a variety of greenhouse and nursery stock.
· transplant, trim and pot plants.
· manage the greenhouse and nursery facilities, including irrigation and heating system
· plan, direct and coordinate departmental propagation program
· manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and work flexible hours
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Required: Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license
Preferred: Pesticide Application License - NCDA (if you don’t currently have this we will provide the resources to get you certified)
Preferred: Certified Plant Professional
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 - $22.00 per hour
