Manager, Central Sterilization Processing And Dispensary Operations
University of the Pacific
Primary Purpose: Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Clinical Services supervises sterilization/dispensing staff and associated processes. Performs a variety of duties related to infection control.
Essential Functions:
- Manage sterilization/dispensing staff to include hiring, training, staff development, work distribution, performance appraisals, adherence to clinic policies and procedures, work schedules, and commendation or disciplinary procedures.
- Coordinate staff coverage for all sterilization/dispensing areas; work in concert with other clinical managers to assure effective and efficient clinic operations.
- Demonstrate exceptional customer service at all times and train staff to these standards.
- Maintain active membership in appropriate committees (e.g. Infection Control Committee, Clinic Committee).
- Plan, direct, problem solve, and perform quality measurements of all assigned tasks, as well as independently perform routine processing of instrument sterilization; oversee troubleshooting of equipment; equipment maintenance, checks and repairs; monitoring of chemicals; distribute instruments and supplies.
- Participate in developing improvements in infection control compliance by students, faculty and staff.
- Provide leadership and oversight in the accomplishment of strategic and operational objectives of the School of Dentistry.
- Ensure that the department is following all applicable policies, laws and regulations.
- Supervise all processing activities including decontamination, high-level disinfection, packaging and sterilization; ensure all work assignments completed
- Create an environment with a focus on infection prevention and patient safety.
- Ensure that adequate, appropriately competent and qualified staff is available to meet requirements
- Ensure a program for initial and ongoing staff education is in place and providing quality services for all staff as defined within applicable and accepted standards.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of materials and equipment; maintain security of all inventory according to established procedures.
- Understand and properly employ the electronic tracking system using bar coding, scanners, and reports provided by tracking software.
- Support the restocking of inventory as needed; track inventory in the dispensary and clinical storage areas.
- Ensure that the sterilization room and dispensing areas are neat, clean, and orderly according to established standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the the Associate Dean for Clinical Services and Clinic Operations Manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Sterilization techniques.
- Infection control protocol and requirements.
Ability to:
- Produce professional and concise reports and written correspondence.
- Index and alphabetize accurately.
- Recognize and set-up dental instruments.
Experience:
- Minimum supervisory experience, preferably in a dental or medical setting.
- Previous experience working in central sterilization serving a larger scale hospital or health care delivery system.
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification in Central Sterilization Management or obtain within 12 months of employment
Working Conditions:
- Position is full-time, 5 days per week, 8 hours per day.
- Occasional overtime required.
- Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens may reasonably be anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to infectious agents.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Dental instruments and equipment
- Dental infection control regulations and guidelines
- Dental materials and their use.
- Dental terminology and procedures
- Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
Ability to:
