Research Policy and Compliance (RPC) provides leadership, regulatory expertise, professional guidance, and administrative support to the campus in order to promote the ethical conduct of research and to facilitate compliance with federal, state, University of California, and UCLA regulations, and policies. RPC supports the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities in his roles as the Institutional Official for oversight of the Animal Care and Use Program at UCLA, and as the Research Integrity Officer. RPC staff serve as subject matter experts and provide the campus community with advice and guidance on matters related to the application of research policies, especially those pertaining to conflict of interest, research misconduct, use of biohazardous materials and animals in research. The office is responsible as well for review of use of radiation producing materials and equipment, and use of cannabis in research. RPC serves as the administrative home for the UCLA Export Control compliance program. RPC staff also work collaboratively with Legal Affairs, Academic Affairs, and the Office of Research Administration on special reviews related to questions of foreign engagement.
RPC convenes and provides leadership for a number of faculty-led review committees.
The Associate Vice Chancellor - Research (AVC) is responsible for leading RPC, a unit within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities. The AVC, the Director- Research Safety and Animal Welfare (RSAW), and the RPC Associate Director, communicate consistently and work collaboratively and strategically with other administrative offices on campus, such as the Technology Development Group, the Office of Contract and Grant Administration and other units of the Office of Research Administration, the Dashew Center, Campus Counsel, Purchasing, various campus departments and research centers, user facilities, and sales and service units, as well as the UC Office of the President (UCOP).
