This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Temporary Biological Science Research Technician 1 position for the Southern Oregon Research and Extension office at Oregon State University (
OSU
). This position at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension (SOREC) office in Central Point, Oregon will assist and collaborate with researchers in the plant pathology and hemp IPM and extension programs. Duties will include assisting in setting up trials at field sites, field data collection, insect survey and monitoring, insect rearing, insect assay, insect pinning, sample processing, laboratory analyses, and preparation of extension materials. This position requires driving a station vehicle to the various field sites.
Position Duties
50% – Lab Work:
Duties include technical assistance in a plant pathology and hemp entomology labs. In pathology lab, duties include, but are not limited to: media preparation for culturing bacterial and fungal pathogens, processing field samples for pathogen isolation, microbial culture collection management, DNA extractions, PCR, data entry, laboratory cleanliness and maintenance of lab equipment. In an entomology lab, duties include but are not limited to: rearing of
cannabis aphids, corn earworm, wireworms and insect biological control agents. This position also conducts biological control studies; performs hemp insects pinning; identifies insects.
30% – Field Work:
Monitor plant for sample collection as needed. Collect tissue samples for further laboratory analyses. Survey insect pests and beneficial into hemp fields throughout growing season. Data collection from hemp field trials Drive state vehicle to field sites.
15% – Extension Publication, Newsletter, Field Day Events, Workshop, Extension Video Development
5% – Miscellaneous:
Participate in group meetings, discussions and staff events.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Additional Required Qualifications
Two years of college-level courses in Biology, Environment Science; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
