Prevention Specialist (MacArthur Park Community Initiative) (Temporary, Full-time, Non-exempt)

Updated: 3/23/2022 Salary: $22.00-23.50 hourly DOE
Summary: Under the direction of the Prevention Education Coordinator, the Prevention Specialist is responsible for cannabis
and tobacco preventions services on a day-to-day basis. Performance is reviewed on a continuous basis with specific goals
and objectives identified throughout the year. This is a full-time, non-exempt position, working 40 hours a week. Typical
schedule is 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM with a one hour lunch, but can vary based on program and community needs; some weekend
shifts are required. This position is expected to be in-person, but can be remote depending on program needs. This position
is expected to end November 30, 2022. *Full COVID-19 Vaccination is required per contract requirements.
Duties / Responsibilities:
• Provide program facilitation and implementation by:
o Facilitating and implementing campaign activities that encompass all stages of organizing including, but not limited to:
asset mapping, action plan development and implementation, and on-going evaluation for the Westlake/MacArthur
Park community. 
Activities will also include community education and enrichment activities, presentations, community events,
and mobilizing community support towards a smoke-free policy campaign.
o Assisting in research and policy analysis on the current impact of secondhand smoke and tobacco and cannabis use
among residents in public places such as parks.
o Assisting in the recruitment, implementation, and facilitation of a youth coalition and a community advisory group.
o Establishing an ongoing working relationship with community-based organizations, schools, parents, young adults,
and youth.
o Communicating and engaging with stakeholders, media and local elected officials for the policy campaign.
o Disseminating campaign, agency, and tobacco and cannabis cessation resources and information to community
organizations, partners, and the public.
o Ensuring that strategies are culturally appropriate and ethical.
o Supporting the collection and coordination of evaluation activities with the Prevention Coordinator and Project
Evaluator.
o Developing print and media educational and promotional materials.
o Supporting and preparing documentation including quarterly progress reports.
o Assisting with the development, negotiation, and management of contracts and grants.
o Assisting with grant writing to develop new programs and to enhance existing programs.
- Attend relevant meetings and trainings.
Other related duties as assigned by the Prevention Education Coordinator AND/OR Prevention Education
Manager.
Prevention Specialist (MPCI)
Minimum Requirements / Qualifications (All applicants MUST meet the minimum qualifications):
- A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Public Policy, and/or social sciences from an accredited college or university–OR-
two(2) years full-time experience working in the fields of public health, public policy and/or community
organizing/advocacy.
- Bilingual capacity (English/Spanish).
• Possess flexibility, initiative and ability to work under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and communication skills with colleagues, clients and representatives from
other community organizations.
- Strong commitment and competency to work with a multi-cultural community.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and a willingness to participate fully in a team process.
- Self-directing and ability to work independently as required.
- Ability to organize and prepare documentation in a timely manner.
- Demonstrable working knowledge of the use and operation of personal computers.
- Proof of passing a TB test and fingerprinting clearance (Live Scan).
- Proof of full COVID-19 Vaccination.
- Additional fingerprinting clearance through the Department of Parks and Recreation is required.
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
- Physical requirements: able to hear a child calling for help, able to see a child on the playground, able to sit for long
periods of time, seeing to inspect the field and written documents; ability to communicate with KYCC staff, affiliates,
clients and public; sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; bending, kneeling and reaching to retrieve
and replace files; and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment.
Desired Qualifications:
• Knowledge and understanding of tobacco and cannabis use prevention planning including community-based and
environmental prevention efforts.
- Knowledge of evidence-based strategies and prevention concepts for addressing cannabis tobacco-related community
problems and contributing factors.
- Experience with facilitating coalitions.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) or Policy Adoption Model.
- Certification in CPR (Youth and Adult) and First Aid training.
- A valid Class C California Driver License, access to personal automobile, and proof of auto insurance.
