Description:
Primary Purpose and Function: To grow and maintain Trials department plants. They will assist the Trials Manager and work with other Trials Grower to produce high quality show plants for trade shows and marketing purposes. They are also responsible for organizing, conducting, and reporting on all New Variety liner and finished evaluations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Moisture Management
- Monitoring of automated greenhouse systems using PRIVA
- Monitor crops daily to determine when to irrigate based on growing environment, plant needs, season cycles, and water patterns to achieve a proper and even moisture level throughout crops
- Operate, maintain, and schedule all irrigation systems
- Communicate with Trials Manager for specific needs surrounding daily watering requirements, and before weekends and holidays
- Participate on Friday, weekend, and holiday watering schedules
Fertility Management
- Determines where weekly media testing is required, submits these results, and determines appropriate fertilization of plants
- Understands different fertilizer blends and rates with ability to choose between them for optimal plant nutrition
- Organizes tissue sampling of crops when necessary
- Understands seasonal cycles and intended purposes of crops to ensure that they finish on schedule
IPM and Scouting
- Scouts for pests and diseases and determines appropriate spray applications on a weekly basis
- Determines if mid-week or additional treatments are needed and ensures that these are done when necessary
- Determines where biologicals can be used and ensures that they are distributed properly; ensures that the appropriate biologicals are ordered on a weekly basis
Direction of Planting
- Instructs staff on weekly potting of plants into finished containers
- Ensures that appropriate planting records are maintained ? Prints accurate labels for planting that include directions for appropriate potting container style and size, as well as set-down locations ? Ensures that input materials are collected and organized prior to planting
- Ensures that proper potting depths and planting techniques are used that replicate what is outlined in the cultural sheets maintained by our department
- Along with Trials Manager assists with updating cultural sheets in Live Product to maintain accurate information for our customers
Direction of Plant Maintenance
- Along with Trials Manager, schedules plant trimming, cleaning, and weeding and ensures that these tasks are completed weekly for their section
- Along with Trials Manager, schedules PGR applications and ensures that correct rates and application methods are used and that proper records are kept regarding these applications for their section
Additional Duties
- Participates in chemical applications of PGRs, fungicides and insecticides as needed ? Assists with organization of plants and moving of plants when needed
- Assists with sample orders and finished order shipments as needed
New Variety Evaluations
- Directs and organizes data collection of ongoing new variety trials
- For liner evaluations, they look up the arrival of new plant material in LiveProduct weekly, enter those trials into our trialing software, and conduct data collection
- For finished evaluations, along with the Trials Manager, they determine the appropriate date, quantity, and container for step-up, enter trial into our trialing software, and conduct data collection
- Upon completion of liner evaluations, they share data with appropriate parties within the company through our trialing software and an emailed report
- Upon completion of finished evaluations, they update appropriate new variety sheets, and share that information with the appropriate parties using our trialing software

The Grower Technician assists the Section Grower and Lead Grower in ensuring all plants produced in the greenhouses at Walters Gardens are grown to the highest quality standard and in a safe, efficient, and economical way.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Moisture Management
- Monitor crops daily to determine when to irrigate plants based on growing environment, plant needs, and moisture levels
- Learn different varieties, sizes, season cycles, and water patterns to achieve a proper and even moisture level throughout crops
- Operate, maintain, and schedule all irrigation systems
- Communicate with Section Grower and Lead Grower for specific water, environmental, and special application needs daily and before weekends/holidays
- Participate in Friday, weekend, and holiday watering schedules
Fertility Management
- Read, assess and coordinate weekly media testing and water sampling
- Schedule and apply fertilizer and/or other nutrients weekly based on media testing results
- Learn and understand the different fertilizer blends and rates
- Choose between fertilizer blends and rates for optimal plant nutrition based on media testing and water sampling results
- Keep crops on schedule
Sanitation
- Scout weekly for algae, liverwort, and weeds in and around the greenhouses
- Apply sanitation techniques to control algae and liverwort growth
- Remove and destroy all weeds and liverwort as they are observed
- Keep greenhouse aisles and floor matting free of debris
- Make herbicide applications around the greenhouses as needed
- Applying slug bait and mouse bait to greenhouse ranges
- Utilize ride on sweeper to keep aisles and production areas clean
- Disposal of chemical rinsate on field grounds
Material Handling
- Unloading deliveries and putting supplies in proper locations
- Help keep production areas organized by moving skids, removing waste, and moving dumpsters
- Assist with unloading cuttings and tissue culture and moving to proper holding facilities
Additional Duties
- Participate in chemical applications of plant growth regulators, fungicides, and insecticides
- Monitor crops and coordinate mowing/pruning as needed
- Assist with mowing and moving of plants as needed
- Observe and communicate any pest and disease issues to the IPM Team, Section Grower, and Lead Grower immediately
- Communicate any other problems or concerns to Section Grower and/or Lead Grower immediately
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- 2 years of horticulture (or related field) education or experience
- Basic organizational and math skills
- Computer skills (including Microsoft Office)
- Ability to be on your feet for 9 hours each day

Inventory

- Review greenhouse processing reports on a weekly basis to determine best methods for working on batches.
- Review crops on a weekly basis and make sure they are free of weeds, moss, and liverwort.
- Enter greenhouse processing reports for resorting, cleaning, and moving for items growing ranges.
- Review items that are flagged to be mowed to make sure they are getting trimmed to proper height at the correct time.
Team Leadership
- Be an active member of the Greenhouse Management Team

The Elite Stock Grower鈥檚 role is to grow and maintain TC motherstock in order to maintain a healthy and true source of stock material for WGI.
Primary Functions:
