Trainee 1 – Class D Motor Vehicle License, and less than one year of qualifying experience (as described in journey level quals)
Duties Description
The incumbent will perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance and repair activities, in a combination of trades associated with bridge repair and maintenance. Please refer to the classification standard for examples of the duties performed. Other duties will be discussed during the interview.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

New York State Team Racial Justice Reporter
The USA TODAY Network New York State Team’s racial justice reporter produces digital content that holds leaders and institutions accountable and that shares the perspectives of persons most impacted by America’s legacy of discrimination and its ongoing impact in areas including the criminal justice system, (including policing, prisons and the legalization of cannabis), housing, the workplace and schools.
Key aspects of the job:
- Pursue revelatory stories related to racial justice issues in communities around New York state.
- Develop relationships with public officials, citizens, experts and others in order to provide unique insight into racial justice issues in communities like Yonkers and Rochester.
- Give special focus to the impact of policing tactics on members of marginalized communities, relying on interviews with community members, records searches and discussions with experts.
- Make it a mission to inform and engage readers through immediacy, enterprise reporting and riveting storytelling.
- Seek out and rely on public records, including databases when appropriate, to examine how government agencies perform and how and when they fall short of their own goals and standards or cause harm in the community. Such records include 50-a police disciplinary documents, housing data, the U.S. business census (which has breakdowns on ownership by race) and state and federal court documents
- Stay informed about state policy and proposed legislation that might impact marginalized groups and report about these developments in a reader-friendly way.
- Act as a public ambassador through community outreach and connects with influencers and engaged readers through social media.
- Provide thoughtful analysis of racial justice issues and of police/community relations.
- Work with the New York State Team editor, investigative and storytelling editors and audience analysts to shape reporting and storytelling to meet audience needs and interests on every platform.
- Help people in underserved communities share their knowledge and their lived experience.
- Build strong relationships to learn what information these community members need/want to know.
- Determine the best digital platforms and methods of presentation to inform underserved communities.
- Consistently make use of solutions journalism principles to produce outstanding enterprise work that leads to positive change within these communities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or equivalent in experience and education, or college degree in related field.
- At least five years of reporting experience, which could include freelancing, internships and college publication work.
- Social media skills and video production knowledge required.
- Full professional working proficiency or bilingual proficiency in both English and Spanish.
- Data reporting knowledge and experience helpful.
- Database skills/Microsoft Excel skills preferred. (Data training will be part of successful candidate’s onboarding steps.)
- Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing, editing).
- Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers' time and money.
- Self-motivation and self-direction.
- Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
