- Operate machine tools, cutting saws and maintains Residency equipment such as chain saw, weed trimmers, and small lawn mowers;
- Cuts, welds, and brazes a variety of metal materials;
- Performs semiskilled carpentry activities and masonry repairs;
- Operates and maintains heating, plumbing, electrical and hot water equipment;
- Parking lot Snow & Ice removal;
- May be called upon to perform cleanup or custodial duties.

Experience limited to maintenance, repair, or inspection activities obtained while working in a commercial garage, where most of the work is primarily related to automobiles, pick-up trucks, small vans, or ambulettes and only occasionally to buses or heavy-duty trucks, is NOT qualifying;
Or 2. an associate degree in automotive or diesel technology AND one year of experience as described above;
Or 3. graduated from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology** AND two years of experience as described above.
Important: You must indicate on your application the capacity and/or weight of the types of equipment you have experience either repairing or inspecting. You must also indicate that you have the required one-year experience with antilock brake systems.
**Adult BOCES programs are not qualifying for this examination.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Inspect the mechanical condition of buses, heavy duty trucks, vans, suburbans, station wagons and other commercial vehicles.
- Perform post-accidents inspections, testify at hearings when required and keep records and submitted reports of inspections.
- Enforce driver, vehicle and hazardous materials regulations.
- Perform duties independently without direct supervision and be responsible for scheduling your own work and adhering to your own timetable. However, workload will be assigned by the supervisor.
- May be required to inspect other bus inspection areas.
This position requires extensive daily travel within an assigned geographic area. You will be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. You must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Field work and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule.
The selected candidate must pass a physical/medical examination prior to appointment.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Transportation and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive, 55b/55c, or labor class service as a Bridge Repair Assistant, Construction Equipment Operator, Equipment Operator Instructor, General Mechanic, Trades Generalist, Highway Equipment Operator, Highway Maintenance Worker 1, Highway Maintenance Worker 2, Maintenance Assistant, Pavement Marking Supervisor, Sign Crew Supervisor, Tree Pruner, Tree Pruner Supervisor, Bridge Repair Mechanic, Trades Specialist (Bridge), Assistant Drill Rig Operator, or Drill Rig Operator.
For all other qualified individuals, candidates must have:
Either 1: two years of experience in the construction or maintenance of paved highways, streets, roads, or similar facilities;
Or 2: 30 semester credit hours in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, forestry, or surveying AND one year of the experience described above;
Or 3: a diploma or certificate of completion in carpentry, masonry, welding, or construction from a post-secondary trade school, apprenticeship program, or military construction specialty school* AND one year of the experience described above.

Duties Description
As a Highway Maintenance Supervisor 1, you would be working supervisor for a highway maintenance crew assigned to the operation of various-sized equipment involved in maintenance and repair projects on or adjacent to state highways or structural units. These projects may include, but are not limited to, patching pavements and filling holes; cleaning and repairing ditches and culverts and other drainage structures; cutting grass and other right-of-way maintenance; repairing guide rails and signs; and snow and ice control. On large maintenance projects you may supervise a phase of the project under the general direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor 2. In order to be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

The duties for Traffic Systems Technician 1 include but are not limited to:
- Install, maintain, test, modify, adjust, overhaul, troubleshoot and repair a variety of electrical systems, electronic, magnetic devices and computerized equipment used to monitor and control traffic signal systems and ITS devices.
- Perform major system modifications; such as traffic signal phasing and timing, signal head modifications, intersection infrastructure construction, traffic signal system integration and system networking.
- Review, modify and prepare documents; which define the operations, design and construction of traffic signal systems and ITS devices.
- Stand-by and overtime availability are required, candidates will be expected to respond to after hours for service and repair callouts.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

- Operates gunite equipment in the pneumatic application of concrete to repair deteriorated areas of structural members.
- Measures, cuts and welds steel plates with acetylene and electric cutting and welding equipment to reinforce damaged and deteriorated structural steel.
- Erects scaffolds, rigs, slings and boatswain chairs and operates under bridge inspection equipment for the inspection, repair and maintenance of bridge super and substructures.
- Operates sand blasting equipment to remove deteriorated paint, scale, rust and other undesirable material from steel and concrete bridge surfaces.
- Works from blueprints, schematic drawings and written instructions fabricates elements of super and substructure, bridge railing and catwalks from structural steel.
- Operates a variety of self-propelled equipment including dump trucks, patching machines, pavers, etc. needed for bridge repair and maintenance projects.
- Supervises a bridge repair sub-crew on small bridge repair and maintenance projects.
- Secures required resources from Bridge Repair Crew or Residencies.
- Oversees, directs and works with sub-crew in performance of work to insure instructions, standards and safety procedures are observed.
- Confers with crew supervisor if unforeseen problems are encountered.
- Must be able to report within a maximum of one hour of call up to your designated shop location.
- Trades Specialists (Bridge) will be required to perform snow and ice operations
- Prepares a brief written daily report on sub-crew and resources used and an explanation of problems encountered and time delays.

Duties Description
Under the direction of an Intermodal Transportation Specialist 1 (Motor Carrier Safety), SG-18, the incumbent of this position will serve as a field representative. Duties will include:
- Examine records of motor carriers to ensure compliance with pertinent state and federal laws regulations and policies.
- Conduct safety audits of new entrant interstate operators to determine compliance with federal motor carrier safety regulations.
- Conduct roadside inspections of commercial drivers.
- Prepare reports of investigation findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Assist motor carriers in complying with provisions of the Transportation Law, Rules and Regulations, orders of the commissioner, and department policies.
- Investigate shipper, passenger, and carrier complaints revolving around claims of safety violations, overcharge, loss, damage, poor service, and oversee the resolution and enforcement process.
- Advise stakeholders of their rights and responsibilities under the Transportation Law.
- Ensure compliance with the Transportation Law and Regulations by conducting inspections, investigations, vehicle impoundments, and issuance of Notices of Violations (NOVs).
- Testify at Department of Transportation and other agency administrative hearings and in civil and criminal court proceedings.
- Successfully completes mandatory trainings and maintain certifications provided by FMCSA.
- Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
This position requires extensive daily travel within an assigned geographic area. You will be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. Duties Description
A Hazardous Materials Inspector monitors regulatory compliance in the transportation of hazardous materials by rail within an assigned territory.
Significant duties include:
- Plans and carries out an itinerary of periodic inspections of the handling of hazardous materials at rail facilities, including intermodal facilities, shipper/consignee locations, and tank car manufacturing and repair facilities.
- Inspects rail cars, freight containers and intermodal bulk containers for compliance with applicable hazardous materials regulations, freight car equipment and safety appliance standards.
- Investigate the loading/unloading, switching and movement of cars containing hazardous materials by rail, as well as the shippers/carriers' documentation of such car loadings.

- Inspect the mechanical condition of buses, heavy duty trucks, vans, suburbans, station wagons and other commercial vehicles.
- Check both controlled and preventative maintenance programs, driver’s hours of labor records and facility of fleet operators.
- Perform post-accidents inspections, testify at hearings when required and keep records and submitted reports of inspections.
- Enforce driver, vehicle and hazardous materials regulations.
- Perform duties independently without direct supervision and be responsible for scheduling your own work and adhering to your own timetable. However, workload will be assigned by the supervisor.
- May be required to inspect other bus inspection areas.

Repairs decks & joints by removing old material with hand/power tools and jackhammers, and places new concrete materials. Operates a variety of highway equipment such as dump trucks, patching machines, rollers, etc. used in bridge repair and maintenance operations.
Candidates will be required to work Winter Maintenance performing Snow & Ice removal activities. Candidates will be required to be included in the department’s written respiratory protection program.

Duties Description
Under the supervision of a Drill Rig Operator (DRO), the ADRO Trainee obtains soil, rock, and pavement core samples; records sample blow counts during progression of the borehole; progresses borehole by means of hollow stem auger, mud rotary, drilled-in casing, driven casing, or rock coring; measures drill tools and measures and records depth to water and thickness of geological strata; prepares field log and maintains productivity and equipment records; drives drilling equipment and support vehicles to borehole site and sets up drilling equipment; manually drills hand auger holes, probes, and test pits; operates bulldozer, pumps, and grout mixers; sets up maintenance and traffic protection; performs traffic flagging; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on all drilling equipment; at the journey level, may help train ADRO Trainees; supervises drill crew in the absence of the Drill Rig Operator; and may perform routine tasks to assist in regional snow and ice control operations.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Duties Description
As a Drill Rig Operator (DRO), the incumbent may: supervise a State drill crew; obtain soil and rock samples for engineering purposes; select the drilling method suitable for the geologic conditions encountered during borehole progression; install geotechnical instrumentation devices, such as slope indicators and open well piezometers; assemble a floating barge when drilling over water, including anchoring and stabilizing, to provide a safe working platform; read engineering plans to identify boring locations; coordinate utility clearance for boreholes in accordance with Industrial Code 53; prepare vehicle reports; maintain detailed field logs for each boring; and train Assistant Drill Rig Operators, Assistant Drill Rig Operator Trainees, and laborers.
This position may require frequent and independent statewide travel from a Region 9 (Binghamton) base.
During the winter, DRO’s will be assigned to a Residency for snow and ice response (operates heavy dump trucks with plow, wing, and spreader attachments to simultaneously plow snow and control ice).
Responsibilities may include participating within the Incident Command System to support the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
