The Sr. Grower Relations Representative manages an assigned vineyard territory and partners with grape growers to influence vineyard practices. Builds and manages strategic grower relationships to drive grape quality through grape growing and viticulture practices. Responsible for monitoring all aspects of grape growing, advising and directing growers on production methods to ensure quality and production goals are met. Responsible for locating and sourcing grapes for wine programs. Responsible for obtaining and communicating market activity to management.
What You Will Do
- Functions as a liaison between winery and growers, educating/advising them on market conditions, quality standards and viticultural practices.
- Develops and maintains vineyard records on cultural practices, yields, and grape quality.
- Applies viticultural skills to confidently approach viticultural challenges and provide recommendations to Growers.
- Responsible for coordinating the scheduling and delivery of grapes from the field to winery and having a basic understanding winery capacity and capability.
- Advises and directs growers on viticulture best practices to ensure quality and production goals are met.
- Monitors all aspects of crop development and forecasts crop tonnages.
- Negotiates most short- and long-term contracts with guidelines from leadership.
- Travels to grower sites to inspect vineyards, identify improvement opportunities and advises growers on growing practices and changes necessary to mitigate risk.
- Participates and makes recommendations in the development of pricing strategy.
- Reports market intelligence regularly to leadership and stays current with market activity pertaining to assigned territory/region. Possesses strong understanding of competitive crops and ag economics in their region/territory.
- Oversees the performance of contracted growers and monitors their application of procedure; works with growers to meet quality objectives and resolve issues.
- Participates in the training and developing of new Grower Relations Reps.
- Manages and directs seasonal staff members, including support of hiring and training of interns and sugar samplers
What You Need
- Bachelor's degree in Science or Business Administration plus 4 years of agriculture business or grower relations, experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 8 years of agriculture business or grower relations experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
- Experience working a minimum of 5 vintages.
- Candidates for this position must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
- Required to drive to various vineyard locations as part of job functions
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision.
- Required to lift and carry equipment/product weighting up to 40 pounds.
- Required to work long hours during peak season.
- Required to walk through vineyards to monitor crop and overall vineyard health.
- Available and willing to travel within the state for daily requirements and drive for extended periods of time.
What Will Set You Apart
- Master’s degree in Viticulture or MBA plus 4 years of agriculture business, grower relations, or general sales experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Business, Viticulture, Plant Science, or Business Administration plus 6 years of agriculture business or grower relations experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
- Skilled in the use of MS Excel and MS PowerPoint at a basic level; MS Word, MS Outlook and Grower System at an intermediate level.
