Willoway Nurseries is seeking an Assistant Grower/ Grower Specialist to join our team. Emphasis will be on helping produce quality crops in temperature controlled environments, greenhouses, and outside in the nursery. Candidate will be responsible for meeting targeted crop schedules. Candidate also will be responsible for assisting with the quality control, shipping, and order processing tasks. At least 1 year of experience working in the horticulture field is required for this position. Opportunity for advancement!
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Engage in all department and company meetings/huddles/open book management culture by actively listening to all information communicated. Interject ideas and questions during the huddles or workday regarding financial status and strategic direction of the department/company. Participate in efforts to develop a positive workplace culture and be actively engaged in your work.
· Maintain 5S/Lean Efficiency principles
· Participate in a cross training program to help support succession planning
· Assist in order processing , pulling customer orders and assisting with loading and unloading of trucks. Quality and accuracy of order processing are essential to this position.
· Assist in growing and cultural techniques that supports continuous improvement of quality plant material. Tasks include the following:
General plant maintenance such as weeding, trimming, spacing/consolidating, cleaning of plant material
Irrigation
Perform pour thru testing to help determine nutritional needs
Assist in grower plan to reduce scrap by resolving and correcting issues proactively
Apply fungicides, insecticides, plant growth regulators and/or herbicides under direction of head growers (pesticide applicator license a plus, but not required)
Apply fertilizers (dry and liquid)
· Learn various cultural practices that need to be followed to insure quality crops are produced and shrinkage is reduced
· Perform weekend/holiday duty on a rotating schedule
· Understanding of environmental controllers, irrigation clocks, watering booms, electric valves and drips
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
· Assist on Production/Propagation crews as needed
· Learn to recognize unusual plant related issues (insects, foliar disorders, moisture level of plants etc) Report issues to Head / Section Grower.
· Train on equipment operation as determined to perform jobs required
· Safety - all employees are responsible for maintaining a safe workplace. Communicate safety issues to your supervisor immediately. Share ideas to improve safety. Engage, and participate in all proactive safety training.
· Accountability - understand the requirement to meet all timelines and expectations with a positive attitude. Engage with upper management and other staff members to develop a positive culture of accountability.
