DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
WGBH News seeks to inform, educate and enlighten our audience on both the news of the day and the news in historical context through in-depth, high quality journalism using the best tools and methods of the craft. WGBH seeks always to report on and facilitate discussion of the news with integrity, fairness, balance, accuracy and civility, WGBH News also seeks to tell the stories of and allow expression of the diversity of voices that make up our entire community.
JOB OVERVIEW
This is a chance for someone to build a new bureau and continue to expand WGBH’s presence within Worcester county. Worcester is New England’s second-largest city and a dynamic community growing at a blazing pace. It houses the headquarters of the Cannabis Control Commission and is the future home of a Red Sox minor league team. Located an hour west of Boston, Worcester has a vibrant arts, restaurant and music scene while surrounded by rural, farm communities. This position will be a key member of an expanding public radio and digital newsroom where the strategic vision is to excel within areas of concentration (beats) that will help distinguish and differentiate its news coverage.
The Worcester Reporter will report to the Executive Producer of Radio and work closely on a daily basis with the Digital Managing Editor, working from the WGBH News Worcester bureau while maintaining close ties with our Boston newsroom.
The reporter will create editorial content for digital and radio reports broadcast locally and nationally. This person must be able to balance several stories simultaneously and adapt to both breaking news and feature reports.
The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, have experience with news reporting including quick digital and radio turns, live reporting and producing. S/he should have strong writing skills and understand how to find and tell a good story.
S/he will have at least five years’ experience in print, television or radio reporting, and will understand the NPR style and demonstrate strong production experience and comfort with using a variety of content management systems and audio editing software. The candidate must have a strong understanding of principles of journalism and have a proven ability to present balanced reporting, fairness and fidelity to facts.
The candidate is preferably someone who has worked a beat, understands how to generate sources and is able to generate story ideas on his/her own. An ideal candidate will be an exceptional writer, savvy user of digital media and have the ability to work within a growing newsroom, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure. This is a CWA Local 1400 union position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Report from Worcester Bureau, dividing time between digital and radio.
- Generate, write and execute stories from the city of Worcester and surrounding communities for digital and radio
- File regular digital stories on spot and breaking news
- Enhance WGBH News’ social media and web presence
- Help develop original, special multi-part series related to issues in the region
- Gather, cut and edit audio
- Monitor for developments in ongoing stories and breaking news and file for newscast
- Update newsroom on daily news coverage
- Maintain planning calendars
- Hire and manage one or two interns at a time
Manage Worcester Bureau office
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Must have at least 5 years of radio, television or print/digital journalism experience, preferably on public broadcasting.
- Must be a self-starter and able to work collaboratively with a small staff.
- This position requires strong writing and digital editing skills and the ability to work within a growing newsroom, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure.
EDUCATION
A college degree is preferred.
